Junior Mechanics
Does your teen love cars, engines, and getting their hands dirty? RAD Torque Raceway is proud to announce Junior Mechanics, a hands-on, two-day engine workshop built just for youth aged 12–17. No experience required; just curiosity, enthusiasm, and a pair of jeans you don’t mind getting greasy.
This exciting program offers a rare opportunity to tear down and rebuild a real small block engine under the guidance of expert instructors in a fun, supportive environment. Whether your teen dreams of becoming a mechanic or just wants to try something new, Junior Mechanics is the perfect starting point.
About Junior Mechanics
Junior Mechanics is a hands-on mechanical workshop designed specifically for teens aged 12–17. Over the course of two Saturdays, participants will completely tear down a small block engine one weekend and rebuild it the next; all at RAD Torque Raceway's Thunder Alley Building.
We provide everything your teen will need: Tools, gloves, safety glasses, lunch, and expert instruction. All they need to bring is a good attitude and old clothes (long sleeves and jeans are highly recommended).

John Hewitt is a force not seen since the end of the 70’s. There are bands, artists and songwriters that mimic and imitate but John Hewitt absorbs and reimagines. From folk clubs to house concerts, festivals to halls John is a master of storytelling, arranging, producing and a painter of poems scarcely seen in today’s musical climate. Since his early teens taking in the powerful sounds of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and the Grateful Dead he has been wandering, searching and yielding a crop of new ideas from the old world.  A multi-instrumentalist from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and being Alberta bound since 2018 John’s mark on the Western music scene is impossible to go unnoticed. Performing over 150 shows per year (From Alberta and British Columbia to Montana, Colorado, California and beyond), covering 20,000 miles per annum and releasing upwards of 3 albums in that same timeframe there is no comparison to the work ethic, the attitude and the drive that John has as an artist. Fronting the New Americans and touring solo most of the year his output impresses the young and the old, the folk and the rock, the country and the town and the only thing left at the end of the night is a feeling you won’t get anywhere else.
 

 
A poet born in the heat of Las Vegas, Abigayle Oakley blends the melodic richness of folk pioneers with the lyrical honesty oftoday’s confessional singer-songwriters. Her songs explore the complexities of life and the existential questions that shape us, often with a sharp, tongue-in-cheek wit that adds layers of humor and insight.
Abigayle made her Bluebird Cafe debut in 2024. She has toured the US and Canada opening for acts such as The War and Treaty, Jed and The Valentine, Forest Blakk and more.
Her songs have been recorded by Nashville artists including Kate Yeager, Molly Frances, and CMT’s September Artist of the Month, Ash Ruder. When not writing, practicing, or performing, you can find Abigayle hiking the beautiful hills of Tennessee.

Up next, Little Man YEG and Choqo bring their high-energy, feel-good hip-hop act that will have the audience vibing and dancing with their cheerful and carefree tunes.

To wrap up the evening, we have the incredible Too Deep 2020 & Saint Charity. This powerhouse duo not only combines Too Deep’s deep, introspective lyrics with Saint Charity’s angelic vocals but also brings a dynamic style of genre-blending, fusing elements from multiple genres to create a sound that’s uniquely their own. Their performance promises to breathe new life into old-school styles and will undoubtedly be the perfect end to an unforgettable night.

Musician and storyteller Steve Olson uncovers the incredible true story of the concert by four future Hall of Famers -- Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Wanda Jackson -- that shook his hometown of Camrose. Using classic guitars, historic photos, and masterful storytelling, Olson brings to life this "rockabilly roadtrip" from Memphis to small-town Alberta. Don't miss this one-man rockabilly spectacle where legendary songs, untold history, and nostalgia collide!

Stephen Olson is a classically-trained guitarist who learned to play Chet Atkins thumb-picking from his Uncle Lyndy. By playing bass and melody lines simultaneously, Stephen can authentically replicate the country and rockabilly sounds of the 1950s. Stephen draws the audiences in with his electric performances and stories from this golden era of music.

Jory Kinjo has toured with legends like B.B. King, ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Fishbone, the Wailers, Ziggy Marley, the English Beat and UB40.
A guitar prodigy from the age of 9, Aaron Young performed in and directed the world-beat stage show, Barrage, touring Asia, Scandinavia, the UK, Canada and the US. 
Young’s music has been featured on PBS, CBC, MTV, Bravo and the BBC. He has produced Barrage, The Polyjesters, John Wort Hannam, Susan Aglukark and Ghostboy.
The duo’s unique history results in an amazing show. Their first two albums garnered a YYC Music Awards 2023 Blues Recording of the year and a WCMA Music Award nomination for Blues Act of the Year.

A two-day workhop to break into playwriting: 
 

"Draft One"   Thursday, March 5 Absolute basics (formatting, introduction to the medium, examples, beginner playwriting exercises).  Participants receive a digital copy of the presentation This is the "how to hold a paintbrush" of playwriting.

 

"Draft Two"   Thursday, March 19 Still very beginner level, but challenges the budding playwrights to begin fleshing out things like character, setting, and story arc, & consider the impact of their writing choices. Participants receive a digital copy of the presentation This is the "how to paint your first painting" of playwriting.

 
Instructor: Katherine Orsten
Katherine Orsten is award-winning playwright, director, and performer, who grew up in Sylvan Lake, studied theatre in Red Deer and Toronto, and now practices throughout the Central Alberta region.
 Their education focused on the creation of new theatre "from scratch, with ingredients you probably have around the house". Their favorite projects are plays that are written locally, cast locally, and performed locally. They are passionate about supporting early-career and community-based playwrights.
 Selected teaching and creative credits include: Playwright for the Sylvan Lake Theatre Trail; Instructor and Program Lead for the Breaking Ground Playwriting Intensive (Red Deer Players); Instructor and Dramaturg for Write It! Early Playwrights’ Circle (Sylvan Lake Theatre); and upcoming Instructor for Act Up! (devised theatre) and Dramaturg/Director for Sylvan Lake Theatre’s 10-Minute Play Festival.

Need a kick start to get writing? These drop-in nights will provide you a safe space to write, discuss, and share your work. Each session will include time to work on your own project or follow a freefall writing prompt. For the regular attendees, optional prompts will be given to work on outside of each session.
Please bring a notebook or charged laptop. No writing experience necessary. 
$8 per evening
 
Facilitator: Fran Kimmel
Fran has worked an eclectic mix of jobs including youth worker, career counsellor, proposal writer, and a ten-year stint as VP for a career consulting firm. Her short stories have appeared in literary journals from coast to coast, and her plays have been produced for both theatre and radio. Fran has published two novels. The Shore Girl landed on the CBC Top 40-Book List and won the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award. No Good Asking, shortlisted for the 2019 Georges Bugnet and ReLit Awards, has been translated for international markets. Fran’s third novel, Cattail Lane, hit bookshelves in the spring of 2025.

The Bailey family has won their golden ticket! Their very own restaurant that is. A brand new kitchen in Edmonton, featuring Jamaican patties, stew chicken, and of course Ms. Pat’s famous soup! As Pat transitions into this new stage of her life, her daughter Kenise prepares to take a leap into adulthood, although her journey to independence is not what she thought it would be. Something is troubling Kenise and Pat can sense it. Pat would do anything for her daughter, but in her attempt to save Kenise she must first recognize her own scars. Ms. Pat's Kitchen examines intergenerational healing and how we all carry pain differently. 
It is intended for ages 14+.

Runtime: 60 minutes, no intermission, followed by a 15-minute talkback
“I am Eagle” is a story about birds—a play that uses fantasy to explore a very real and human experience. In this story, a young eagle, representing me, is taken from its nest and raised in a place that’s not its own. The eagle faces adventures and challenges, grappling with its identity and a deep sense of not belonging. The journey back to its true flock becomes a powerful metaphor for my own return to my culture and community.
Through puppetry, the play captures a sense of wonder and flight, blending elements of fantasy and falconry to symbolize the freedom that comes with self-acceptance. These fantastical elements create a safe space, allowing both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences to engage with difficult history in a way that’s both meaningful and inspiring.
