"Marquis Crossing Ladies Society's First Attempt at Murder" sounds like an intriguing title for a mystery novel or a comedic play. Picture a quaint and seemingly tranquil town where a group of elderly ladies, known for their knitting circles and charitable bake sales, find themselves tangled in a surprising plot twist. Their serene routine is disrupted when a local nuisance threatens their beloved community center, and they jokingly concoct a plan to "eliminate" the problem. However, with their first attempt at murder, chaos ensues, leading to a series of humorous mishaps and misunderstandings. As the story unfolds, the ladies must navigate their way through unexpected consequences, all while uncovering secrets, building friendships, and ultimately solving a mystery that none of them anticipated. The narrative could blend humor and suspense, offering readers a delightful exploration of camaraderie, aging, and the unexpected adventures life can present.

Divas Live!

John Hewitt is a force not seen since the end of the 70’s. There are bands, artists and songwriters that mimic and imitate but John Hewitt absorbs and reimagines. From folk clubs to house concerts, festivals to halls John is a master of storytelling, arranging, producing and a painter of poems scarcely seen in today’s musical climate. Since his early teens taking in the powerful sounds of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and the Grateful Dead he has been wandering, searching and yielding a crop of new ideas from the old world.  A multi-instrumentalist from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and being Alberta bound since 2018 John’s mark on the Western music scene is impossible to go unnoticed. Performing over 150 shows per year (From Alberta and British Columbia to Montana, Colorado, California and beyond), covering 20,000 miles per annum and releasing upwards of 3 albums in that same timeframe there is no comparison to the work ethic, the attitude and the drive that John has as an artist. Fronting the New Americans and touring solo most of the year his output impresses the young and the old, the folk and the rock, the country and the town and the only thing left at the end of the night is a feeling you won’t get anywhere else.
 

 
A poet born in the heat of Las Vegas, Abigayle Oakley blends the melodic richness of folk pioneers with the lyrical honesty oftoday’s confessional singer-songwriters. Her songs explore the complexities of life and the existential questions that shape us, often with a sharp, tongue-in-cheek wit that adds layers of humor and insight.
Abigayle made her Bluebird Cafe debut in 2024. She has toured the US and Canada opening for acts such as The War and Treaty, Jed and The Valentine, Forest Blakk and more.
Her songs have been recorded by Nashville artists including Kate Yeager, Molly Frances, and CMT’s September Artist of the Month, Ash Ruder. When not writing, practicing, or performing, you can find Abigayle hiking the beautiful hills of Tennessee.

Stephen Olson is a classically-trained guitarist who learned to play Chet Atkins thumb-picking from his Uncle Lyndy. Jâca is an award-winning clarinet/guitar duo that combines world music, virtuosity, and humor to bring an adventurous, passionate, and completely original musical style to the stage. Jaca combines the intimacy of an instrumental duo with a larger-than-life energy to create an experience that consistently leaves audiences buzzing. “At a Jâca concert you’re not just a bystander, you feel a part of it.” – Humans of Chamber Music.
Described as an “alluring and stunning combination” (Take Effect) Jâca’s music is truly a unique fusion that fits into no single genre. From Flamenco to Fado, Appalachia to Argentina, and guitar slides to clarinet smears, the duo explores the highest limits of what their instruments can do. Their debut album, Breakthrough (Navona, 2022) has been honored by worldwide organizations including the International Portuguese Music Awards (Best Instrumental Performance 2023), and the International Clarinet Association. Portuguese-Canadian clarinetist Wesley Ferreira is an acclaimed soloist and orchestral musician. He always brings his infectious positivity, big smile, and way too many reeds to every rehearsal. Jory Kinjo has toured with legends like B.B. King, ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Fishbone, the Wailers, Ziggy Marley, the English Beat and UB40.
A guitar prodigy from the age of 9, Aaron Young performed in and directed the world-beat stage show, Barrage, touring Asia, Scandinavia, the UK, Canada and the US. 
Young’s music has been featured on PBS, CBC, MTV, Bravo and the BBC. He has produced Barrage, The Polyjesters, John Wort Hannam, Susan Aglukark and Ghostboy.
The duo’s unique history results in an amazing show. Their first two albums garnered a YYC Music Awards 2023 Blues Recording of the year and a WCMA Music Award nomination for Blues Act of the Year.

Need a kick start to get writing? These drop-in nights will provide you a safe space to write, discuss, and share your work. Each session will include time to work on your own project or follow a freefall writing prompt. For the regular attendees, optional prompts will be given to work on outside of each session.
Please bring a notebook or charged laptop. No writing experience necessary.

Facilitator: Fran Kimmel
Fran has worked an eclectic mix of jobs including youth worker, career counsellor, proposal writer, and a ten-year stint as VP for a career consulting firm. Her short stories have appeared in literary journals from coast to coast, and her plays have been produced for both theatre and radio. Fran has published two novels. The Shore Girl landed on the CBC Top 40-Book List and won the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award. No Good Asking, shortlisted for the 2019 Georges Bugnet and ReLit Awards, has been translated for international markets. Fran’s third novel, Cattail Lane, hit bookshelves in the spring of 2025.

What is included in the ticket price? 

Your ticket includes access to the event, light refreshments and beverages, a custom CNSA nursing pin with your completion year, and an afternoon of celebration!  

What should I wear?

Formal attire is not required, but most attendees may dress up for the event, especially for photos!

Can I bring a guest?

Tickets will first be open to students and Faculty, from January 10-16. From January 17-20, tickets will be open to anyone.


Do I have to stay the whole time?

No, you don’t have to stay the entire time. You’re welcome to leave once your name has been called, or whenever works for your schedule. 

Is parking available?

Yes, there is plenty of parking available at and around MacEwan. 

Can I still recieve a pin if I cannot attend?

Yes, please reach out to cnsa@macewan.ca to arrange pick up and payment of $10. You may choose to pick up in person in coordination with CNSA or have your name read and have someone receive your pin in your place during the event if preferred.


Will there be diverse food options available?

Kevin Gillese is an award-winning Canadian comedy writer, performer and producer with more than twenty years of experience squeezing laughs out of audiences. He has written or co-written ten plays that have been produced at theatres in Canada and the United States. He has written and produced a whole bunch of short films (including “That Was Awesome” winner of the Audience Award for Best US Narrative at DC Shorts Film Fest), not to mention a few web series (like “Hart of America” which was nominated for best comedy series at Rio Web Fest) and exactly one feature film: “How To Ruin The Holidays” starring Colin Mochrie and Amber Nash - currently available on Amazon. “How To Ruin The Holidays” won the Jury Award for Best Ensemble at the Rome International Film Festival and the Film Threat review raved: “You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry laughing, it’s inspired.” Kevin was the Artistic Director of Dad’s Garage Theatre in Atlanta for exactly ten years. With Genocidal Intentions: Conversion Practices in North America
Hybrid event: presentor and panelists will be attending online. Presentation by Lucas Wilson + panel discussion.
Conversion practices--commonly referred to as conversion therapy--constitute the damaging efforts to change queer individuals' sexual orientations and/or gender identities and expressions. Despite the common misapprehension that conversion practices are a thing of the past--in North America, at least--such anti-queer efforts persist and continue to wreak havoc on countless members of LGBTQ+ communities, particularly those in high-control Christian contexts. Wilson will present a broadened definition of conversion practices before discussing the prevalence of conversion practices in North America and why the number of reported cases is likely inaccurate. Wilson will flesh out the ways by which conversion practitioners have, by definition, genocidal intentions that seek the eradication of LGBTQ+ communities.
Speaker Bio:
Lucas Wilson (he/him) is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Toronto Mississauga and was formerly the Justice, Equity, and Transformation Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Calgary. He is the editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy. He is also the author of At Home with the Holocaust: Postmemory, Domestic Space, and Second-Generation Holocaust Literature, which received the Jordan Schnitzer First Book Publication Award, as well as the co-editor of Emerging Trends in Third-Generation Holocaust Literature, which was named a 2024 Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title. His public-facing writing has appeared in The Advocate, Queerty, LGBTQ Nation, and Religion Dispatches, among other venues. Queer Horizons: A Speaker Series Exploring 2SLGBTQ+ Research and Community Work 
The Queer Horizons speaker series, presented by the MacEwan Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity, profiles research and community work focused on 2SLGBTQ+ identities, issues, and topics. All events are free and open to everyone on campus and in the community.

This game is being played at Downtown Community Arena (10245 105 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5H 2T3) located inside Rogers Place, only two blocks from MacEwan campus. Entry to the DCA is available through the north side entrance or through the Rogers Place pedway.
All tickets are General Admission — grab any open seat and cheer on your Griffins! Please help create a positive and respectful atmosphere for everyone. 
Please note there is no concession available at Griffins hockey games.

If you claim a student ticket through the event listing, you will be required to show your MacEwan student ID at the door. Parking:
Paid parking is available on the north side of the arena. Game day LRT and bus schedules are provided on the Edmonton transit website or through the Transit app.
 
The MacEwan University Griffins have been a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association and U SPORTS since 2016. In the history of Griffins Athletics, they have captured over 100 title championships. In 2021, the women’s soccer team captured the Griffins first USPORTS championship title.

For 2026, Cold Snap is offering a two-day, two-run competition for All-Star Elite teams. School, Dance, All Star Novice and All star Prep teams will compete once. Teams may be scheduled on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
