Stephen Olson is a classically-trained guitarist who learned to play Chet Atkins thumb-picking from his Uncle Lyndy. By playing bass and melody lines simultaneously, Stephen can authentically replicate the country and rockabilly sounds of the 1950s. John Hewitt is a force not seen since the end of the 70’s. There are bands, artists and songwriters that mimic and imitate but John Hewitt absorbs and reimagines. From folk clubs to house concerts, festivals to halls John is a master of storytelling, arranging, producing and a painter of poems scarcely seen in today’s musical climate. Since his early teens taking in the powerful sounds of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and the Grateful Dead he has been wandering, searching and yielding a crop of new ideas from the old world.  A multi-instrumentalist from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and being Alberta bound since 2018 John’s mark on the Western music scene is impossible to go unnoticed. Performing over 150 shows per year (From Alberta and British Columbia to Montana, Colorado, California and beyond), covering 20,000 miles per annum and releasing upwards of 3 albums in that same timeframe there is no comparison to the work ethic, the attitude and the drive that John has as an artist. Fronting the New Americans and touring solo most of the year his output impresses the young and the old, the folk and the rock, the country and the town and the only thing left at the end of the night is a feeling you won’t get anywhere else.
 

 
A poet born in the heat of Las Vegas, Abigayle Oakley blends the melodic richness of folk pioneers with the lyrical honesty oftoday’s confessional singer-songwriters. Her songs explore the complexities of life and the existential questions that shape us, often with a sharp, tongue-in-cheek wit that adds layers of humor and insight.
Abigayle made her Bluebird Cafe debut in 2024. She has toured the US and Canada opening for acts such as The War and Treaty, Jed and The Valentine, Forest Blakk and more.
Her songs have been recorded by Nashville artists including Kate Yeager, Molly Frances, and CMT’s September Artist of the Month, Ash Ruder. When not writing, practicing, or performing, you can find Abigayle hiking the beautiful hills of Tennessee.

Need a kick start to get writing? These drop-in nights will provide you a safe space to write, discuss, and share your work. Each session will include time to work on your own project or follow a freefall writing prompt. For the regular attendees, optional prompts will be given to work on outside of each session.
Please bring a notebook or charged laptop. No writing experience necessary.

Fran has worked an eclectic mix of jobs including youth worker, career counsellor, proposal writer, and a ten-year stint as VP for a career consulting firm. Her short stories have appeared in literary journals from coast to coast, and her plays have been produced for both theatre and radio. Fran has published two novels. The Shore Girl landed on the CBC Top 40-Book List and won the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award. No Good Asking, shortlisted for the 2019 Georges Bugnet and ReLit Awards, has been translated for international markets. Fran’s third novel, Cattail Lane, hit bookshelves in the spring of 2025.

The 2026 Canadian College Finals Rodeo is returning to Rimbey, Alberta May 1 to 3rd, 2026. Top Canadian collegiate rodeo athletes attending post-secondary schools from all over Western Canada will compete for the Canadian Collegiate Championship! Over the three-day event, there will be three separate rodeo performances on Friday Night, Saturday night and Sunday Afternoon where we will be crowing our Champions!

THE STAND UP SHOW: BRAD SEMOTIUK
The Stand Up Show brings Canada's top comics to the fabulous Grindstone Theatre every Friday night.
This week’s headliner is Brad Semotiuk! Brad started stand up at 17, since then he has been featured on Just for Laughs Originals, Sirius XM Radio, CBC Radio, has headlined across Canada, and bought a huge iced out cuban link chain. His mind is crazy, twisted, and insane (in a cool way). At the age of 19, he was the youngest winner of the $10,000 Martin Grant for Comedy, and, to this day, the only Canadian comedian to win the prize. He flies around in a private jet telling jokes and stories, and when he’s not doing that he’s riding around on a yacht telling jokes and stories. In 2025 he will be releasing his debut comedy special, which will be good.
This week's show also features Celeste Lampa (JFL Originals, Toronto Comedy Festival) and guest emcee Adriaan Kriel (Grindstone Comedy Festival).

Getting to the David Atkinson Gym:

Griffins Athletics recommends parking the 110 Parkade for a fee and exiting through the third level of the parkade. From there, make your way west through the pedway into the SAMU Building and onto the gym pedway with entrance to the gym seating.
Alternatively, there is parking in the 107 Ave underground parkade or north lot for a fee. From there, follow the signs for the Sport and Wellness Info Desk. Once at the info desk make your way up to the second floor and towards the gym pedway with entrance to the gym seating.

Parking:
Paid parking is available throughout the campus. All locations can be found on the MacEwan Parking website. Game day LRT and bus schedules are provided on the Edmonton transit website or through the Transit app.
 
The MacEwan University Griffins have been a member of the Canada West Universities Athletic Association and U SPORTS since 2016. In the history of Griffins Athletics, they have captured over 100 title championships. In 2021, the women’s soccer team captured the Griffins first USPORTS championship title.

Miniseries, (Joleen Ballendine, Steven Hurst, Sam Stralak and Marg Lawler)is a troupe created in 2018. Each show, the cast of seasoned comedians will create an entirely new improvised HBO pilot, rife with family drama, beautiful pictures, intricate stories, and plenty of jokes, based off of one suggestion from the audience.

FEM JAM is a monthly improv jam for folks who identify as women, transfeminine, non-binary, and gender-diverse.
Each session is led by one of Rapid Fire Theatre’s wonderful facilitators and packed with playful warm-ups, games, exercises, and possibly some scene work if the vibe is right. Expect laughter, low-stakes silliness, and a room that’s supportive, encouraging, and here for your bold choices.Whether you’re a total newbie, an improv lifer, or someone who just wants a fun, creative space that isn’t weirdly competitive, FEM JAM is for you. Come comfy, bring water (and snacks if you’re smart), and get ready to make things up with a very excellent group of humans.No improv experience required.

Do Improv Good is a deep dive into what makes improv truly shine—authenticity, emotional truth, contrast, and commitment. Led by Kevin Gillese, former Artistic Director of Dad’s Garage and Rapid Fire, this workshop blends philosophy and practice to help you stop doing scenes and start living them. Come ready to play, reflect, and do improv good.
Kevin Gillese is an award-winning Canadian comedy writer, performer and producer with more than twenty years of experience squeezing laughs out of audiences. He has written or co-written ten plays that have been produced at theatres in Canada and the United States. He has written and produced a whole bunch of short films (including “That Was Awesome” winner of the Audience Award for Best US Narrative at DC Shorts Film Fest), not to mention a few web series (like “Hart of America” which was nominated for best comedy series at Rio Web Fest) and exactly one feature film: “How To Ruin The Holidays” starring Colin Mochrie and Amber Nash - currently available on Amazon. “How To Ruin The Holidays” won the Jury Award for Best Ensemble at the Rome International Film Festival and the Film Threat review raved: “You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry laughing, it’s inspired.” Kevin was the Artistic Director of Dad’s Garage Theatre in Atlanta for exactly ten years. Prior to that he was the Artistic Director at Rapid Fire Theatre in Edmonton. He is also one half of the improv duo SCRATCH.
