Their serene routine is disrupted when a local nuisance threatens their beloved community center, and they jokingly concoct a plan to "eliminate" the problem. However, with their first attempt at murder, chaos ensues, leading to a series of humorous mishaps and misunderstandings. As the story unfolds, the ladies must navigate their way through unexpected consequences, all while uncovering secrets, building friendships, and ultimately solving a mystery that none of them anticipated. The narrative could blend humor and suspense, offering readers a delightful exploration of camaraderie, aging, and the unexpected adventures life can present.

Need a kick start to get writing? These drop-in nights will provide you a safe space to write, discuss, and share your work. Each session will include time to work on your own project or follow a freefall writing prompt. For the regular attendees, optional prompts will be given to work on outside of each session.
Please bring a notebook or charged laptop. No writing experience necessary.

Facilitator: Fran Kimmel
Fran has worked an eclectic mix of jobs including youth worker, career counsellor, proposal writer, and a ten-year stint as VP for a career consulting firm. Her short stories have appeared in literary journals from coast to coast, and her plays have been produced for both theatre and radio. Fran has published two novels. The Shore Girl landed on the CBC Top 40-Book List and won the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award. No Good Asking, shortlisted for the 2019 Georges Bugnet and ReLit Awards, has been translated for international markets. Fran’s third novel, Cattail Lane, hit bookshelves in the spring of 2025.

Stephen Olson is a classically-trained guitarist who learned to play Chet Atkins thumb-picking from his Uncle Lyndy. By playing bass and melody lines simultaneously, Stephen can authentically replicate the country and rockabilly sounds of the 1950s. The 2026 Canadian College Finals Rodeo is returning to Rimbey, Alberta May 1 to 3rd, 2026. Top Canadian collegiate rodeo athletes attending post-secondary schools from all over Western Canada will compete for the Canadian Collegiate Championship! Over the three-day event, there will be three separate rodeo performances on Friday Night, Saturday night and Sunday Afternoon where we will be crowing our Champions!

Divas Live!

John Hewitt is a force not seen since the end of the 70’s. There are bands, artists and songwriters that mimic and imitate but John Hewitt absorbs and reimagines. From folk clubs to house concerts, festivals to halls John is a master of storytelling, arranging, producing and a painter of poems scarcely seen in today’s musical climate. Since his early teens taking in the powerful sounds of the Beatles, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and the Grateful Dead he has been wandering, searching and yielding a crop of new ideas from the old world.  A multi-instrumentalist from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and being Alberta bound since 2018 John’s mark on the Western music scene is impossible to go unnoticed. Performing over 150 shows per year (From Alberta and British Columbia to Montana, Colorado, California and beyond), covering 20,000 miles per annum and releasing upwards of 3 albums in that same timeframe there is no comparison to the work ethic, the attitude and the drive that John has as an artist. Fronting the New Americans and touring solo most of the year his output impresses the young and the old, the folk and the rock, the country and the town and the only thing left at the end of the night is a feeling you won’t get anywhere else.
 

 
A poet born in the heat of Las Vegas, Abigayle Oakley blends the melodic richness of folk pioneers with the lyrical honesty oftoday’s confessional singer-songwriters. Her songs explore the complexities of life and the existential questions that shape us, often with a sharp, tongue-in-cheek wit that adds layers of humor and insight.
Abigayle made her Bluebird Cafe debut in 2024. She has toured the US and Canada opening for acts such as The War and Treaty, Jed and The Valentine, Forest Blakk and more.
Her songs have been recorded by Nashville artists including Kate Yeager, Molly Frances, and CMT’s September Artist of the Month, Ash Ruder. When not writing, practicing, or performing, you can find Abigayle hiking the beautiful hills of Tennessee.

From Flamenco to Fado, Appalachia to Argentina, and guitar slides to clarinet smears, the duo explores the highest limits of what their instruments can do. Their debut album, Breakthrough (Navona, 2022) has been honored by worldwide organizations including the International Portuguese Music Awards (Best Instrumental Performance 2023), and the International Clarinet Association. Portuguese-Canadian clarinetist Wesley Ferreira is an acclaimed soloist and orchestral musician. He always brings his infectious positivity, big smile, and way too many reeds to every rehearsal. Dividing time between his home in Spain and his native USA, guitarist Jaxon Williams is an active performer of both Classical and Spanish Flamenco styles. The Grindstone Comedy Theatre is a venue that is rented by independently produced shows. The Malarkey Murders is produced by Sorry Not Sorry Improv, an Edmonton-based, nonprofit theatre society that aims to discover stories through the art of improvisational theatre. The Stand Up Show brings Canada's top comics to the fabulous Grindstone Theatre every Friday night.
Gabby Rose is a queer comedian who started her career in Edmonton in 2021. With only a few years in the game, she quickly found her comedic voice and has since been performing all over the country. Finding humor in all things, she delivers an honest  account of the world through a collection of dynamic (and often embarrassing) stories, cheeky inner dialogue, pipping hot takes, and of course, fuckin’ hilarious jokes. She’ll yell, you’ll laugh, it’s a guarantee.
This week we’re thrilled to be presenting an ALL QUEER lineup of comedians (which is pretty unheard of outside that one month everyone pretends to tolerate us). All the way from Toronto is Sam Sferrazza (CBC Gem, JFL Toronto, Winnipeg Comedy Festival), special guest Sophie Haze (Montreal Gigglefest), and master of ceremonies Leif Oleson-Cormack (Edinburgh Fringe, Seattle International Comedy Competition).

Hold onto your hats (and your bladder!) The University of Alberta Opera Theatre is about to flush your expectations down the drain with their upcoming production of Urinetown, The Musical. It’s quirky, it’s sardonic, and it’s the most fun you can have with a water shortage. This unconventional satire on corporate greed, social justice, and the price of well…..using the restroom, hits the stage on January 9, 10 and 11 at Convocation Hall on the University of Alberta campus.
In a world where water is more precious than gold, the musical takes us to a dystopian society where access to toilets is a privilege - one that comes with a steep fee. When the working class revolts against the corporate-controlled bathroom monopoly, what follows is a hilarious and surprisingly profound exploration of human nature, power, and the consequences of taking everything for granted.
Urinetown takes on contemporary issues with sharp wit, irreverent humour, and a surprisingly catchy score. The talented cast of U of A Opera Theatre will bring to life a world where the simplest human need becomes a battleground for rebellion, love and revolution. With raucous numbers like “It’s a Privilege to Pee” and “Run, Freedom, Run!” expect songs that stick with you longer than that last sip of water before the show starts.
Don't let the title fool you - this is no bathroom humour showcase (well, not entirely). Beneath the slapstick antics and over-the-top parody, Urinetown packs a serious punch, addressing themes of power, corruption, and inequality that will leave you thinking long after the final curtain.
