We’re starting the year the best way we know how. Loud, fast, and packed with action from morning through night. Drag racing heats things up early, then Nite Thunder dirt oval racing takes over in the evening. One ticket, two styles of racing, no need to choose sides.

Need a kick start to get writing? These drop-in nights will provide you a safe space to write, discuss, and share your work. Each session will include time to work on your own project or follow a freefall writing prompt. For the regular attendees, optional prompts will be given to work on outside of each session.
Please bring a notebook or charged laptop. No writing experience necessary.

Fran has worked an eclectic mix of jobs including youth worker, career counsellor, proposal writer, and a ten-year stint as VP for a career consulting firm. Her short stories have appeared in literary journals from coast to coast, and her plays have been produced for both theatre and radio. Fran has published two novels. The Shore Girl landed on the CBC Top 40-Book List and won the Alberta Reader’s Choice Award. No Good Asking, shortlisted for the 2019 Georges Bugnet and ReLit Awards, has been translated for international markets. Fran’s third novel, Cattail Lane, hit bookshelves in the spring of 2025.

Jâca is an award-winning clarinet/guitar duo that combines world music, virtuosity, and humor to bring an adventurous, passionate, and completely original musical style to the stage. Jaca combines the intimacy of an instrumental duo with a larger-than-life energy to create an experience that consistently leaves audiences buzzing. “At a Jâca concert you’re not just a bystander, you feel a part of it.” – Humans of Chamber Music.
Described as an “alluring and stunning combination” (Take Effect) Jâca’s music is truly a unique fusion that fits into no single genre. From Flamenco to Fado, Appalachia to Argentina, and guitar slides to clarinet smears, the duo explores the highest limits of what their instruments can do. Their debut album, Breakthrough (Navona, 2022) has been honored by worldwide organizations including the International Portuguese Music Awards (Best Instrumental Performance 2023), and the International Clarinet Association. Portuguese-Canadian clarinetist Wesley Ferreira is an acclaimed soloist and orchestral musician. He always brings his infectious positivity, big smile, and way too many reeds to every rehearsal. Dividing time between his home in Spain and his native USA, guitarist Jaxon Williams is an active performer of both Classical and Spanish Flamenco styles. He also knows more about fingernail care than a certified beautician and can slap on a fake nail in 5 minutes or less. Since 2018, Jâca has brought their infectious charm to arts series and music festivals across the USA and worldwide. They have played in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and have been featured on national television and radio in Portugal, Ecuador, and the USA. Press outlets have described the duo as being “at the forefront of an exciting new wave of chamber music groups” (Sneak Preview), and praises Jâca for “pushing classical music forward” (Culturs: Global Multicultural Magazine).
Dividing their time between the USA, Canada, Spain, and Portugal, this 21st-century duo represents the limitless potential of an interconnected world.

The 2026 Canadian College Finals Rodeo is returning to Rimbey, Alberta May 1 to 3rd, 2026. Top Canadian collegiate rodeo athletes attending post-secondary schools from all over Western Canada will compete for the Canadian Collegiate Championship! Over the three-day event, there will be three separate rodeo performances on Friday Night, Saturday night and Sunday Afternoon where we will be crowing our Champions!

Musician and storyteller Steve Olson uncovers the incredible true story of the concert by four future Hall of Famers -- Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Wanda Jackson -- that shook his hometown of Camrose. Using classic guitars, historic photos, and masterful storytelling, Olson brings to life this "rockabilly roadtrip" from Memphis to small-town Alberta. Don't miss this one-man rockabilly spectacle where legendary songs, untold history, and nostalgia collide!

Stephen Olson is a classically-trained guitarist who learned to play Chet Atkins thumb-picking from his Uncle Lyndy. By playing bass and melody lines simultaneously, Stephen can authentically replicate the country and rockabilly sounds of the 1950s. Stephen draws the audiences in with his electric performances and stories from this golden era of music.

What does it mean for a poem to bear witness? In this generative workshop, participants will explore writing that responds to personal experience and collective events, inhabiting the space between the intimate and the political. Drawing on the concept of the “poetry of witness,” we will consider how poems can document, remember, and respond with care and craft. Through discussion and guided exercises, writers will experiment with shaping testimony into powerful poetic form.
 
Instructor: Rayanne Haines
Rayanne Haines is an award-winning hybrid author and pushcart nominated poet, producer and podcaster. She is the author of Tell The Birds Your Body Is Not A Gun (Frontenac House), winner of the 2022 Stephan G. Stephansson, Alberta Literary Award for Poetry and shortlisted for both the BPAA Robert Kroetsch Award, and the ReLit Award. She's also the author of the poetry collections The Stories in My Skin (2013), Stained with the Colours of Sunday Morning (Inanna, 2017), and now, What Kind of Daughter? (Frontenac House, 2024) a poetry and essay memoir exploring grief, identity, and gendered trauma. Rayanne served as the 2022 Writer in Residence for the Edmonton Region Federation of Libraries, is the recipient of an Edmonton Artist Trust Fund Award, host of the Crow Reads Podcast, President of the League of Canadian Poets, and an Assistant Professor at MacEwan University. She has been published in various anthologies and journals including the Globe and Mail, Minola Review, Fiddlehead, Grain, FreeFall, Prairie Fire and others.

Edmonton’s Annual Outdoor Winter Dance Event
April 3 & 4, 2026 @ Sir Winston Churchill Square.
As a Northern winter city, when spring-time hits and the snow melts, there is a buzz within the City of Edmonton. Residents are quick to get outside and celebrate the passing of yet another Canadian winter. The Downtown Defrost has captured this spirit by providing Edmontonians an outdoor electronic music festival that celebrates the city’s diverse electronic-music artists and dance scene.
Launched in 2015, the Downtown Defrost is a family-friendly winter celebration of dance music and culture, produced by a non-profit organization “The Factory Music & Arts LTD.” in collaboration with local group Night Vision Music. This annual event typically sees an outdoor Edmonton space transformed into a fun dance party featuring lights, installations, and some of the city's favorite DJs alongside international talent. For 2026, the Downtown Defrost will be taking place in Edmonton’s iconic Sir Winston Churchill Square over the long weekend of Good Friday and easter long weekend.
