Why do young people start bands? Because it’s fun. It’s fun to be vocationally audacious when there’s so much future to be had. To sleep on couches and floors. It’s even fun to be broke, for a time. In the pursuit of rock n’ roll, the hardships of obscurity just add flavour to your lore.
I first met Yukon Blonde when they were young, when they moved to Vancouver from a small town in BC’s interior. They had their own van, which was impressive, and into which I helped them load heavy amps and a full sized Rhodes piano. They all had long hair and huge smiles. Frustratingly, even then, they were incredible musicians. They may have been the coolest people I knew. Twenty years later, the same might be true.
When being broke and sleeping on couches is no longer fun, bands break up. And even if money or comfort do enter the picture, success can be just as trying to a band’s tangled web of egos. So it’s no small miracle to be a scene survivor.Yukon Blonde are indeed scene survivors, and the secret to their successful marriage is right at the core of their 7th studio LP. In fact, it’s right in the title - Friendship & Rock n' Roll. It’s a befitting thesis statement for a band that has spanned decades as indie-rock darlings, charted singles on rock radio, and built a dedicated audience as mainstays of the club touring circuit.
I’ll admit, the title conjures special memories for me, personally. Years after helping them load out behind some crappy (and long deceased) underground venue, I asked Yukon Blonde to play at my wedding. I’ll never forget the moment they started into a cover of Jackie Wilson’s (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher. I excused myself mid-sentence with a distant relative, sprinted to the dance floor, and joined what was without question the most holistically insane dance party I’ve ever attended. That night, they were the very best band in the world - and the rest of us were a sweaty, elated mess.
If friendship comes naturally to Jeffrey Innes, Brandon Scott, Graham Jones & James Younger, so too does rock n’ roll. Yukon Blonde has always sounded classic, but they live in the present day. You won’t see them placating the myth of rock n’ roll. Never have they slipped into a “throwback” caricature of some supposed glory day. No posturing, or pretending - it’s guitar music that doesn’t wink at the camera.
On Friendship & Rock n’ Roll, the riffs are bold and the vibes are bright. Even when the lyrical tone is defeated or heart-broken, we get the sense that everything is going to be alright. There’s whimsy in the subtext of Keep On Breaking My Heart, where Innes welcomes the punishment from his distant lover. The mid-tempo burner harkens to Tom Petty’s golden era in tone and playfulness - a cheeky grin behind the melancholy.
This is a seasoned quartet making music for the joy of it with songs that were cultivated the old-fashioned way: in a jam space. The band spent the summer of 2024 pooling song ideas and crafting air-tight arrangements before getting to work at Innes’ Vancouver area studio, Midvale Sound.
As a result, this is the first Yukon Blonde album with song contributions from every member. Drummer Graham Jones (fresh off a tour subbing for Broken Social Scene’s Justin Peroff) penned Phaedra, a steering wheel tapper with a Rubber Soul-esque break-down. Though Younger and Innes tag team lead vocals throughout the record, lead guitarist Brandon Scott takes the helm on I’ve Got Yours, an earnest ode to the band itself. Scott, who has recently released several stunning EPs under the moniker Brandon Wolfe Scott, sings, “Cuz’ who knows how long this could all last / I still wanna make it / As long as you’ve got my back, I’ve got yours.”
I’ve Got Yours feels like an important sentiment for Yukon Blonde today. After all, over twenty years, the creative wanderings of any band will test its constituents. In recent years, the band’s offerings have grown increasingly electronic, and increasingly centered around the personal studio experimentations of band leader Jeffrey Innes. Both he and bassist James Younger have dedicated increasing energies toward producing other bands and recording soundtracks for TV and film. Innes recently scored Osgood Perkins’ new feature The Monkey (starring Elijah Wood and Theo James), and Younger’s production-related podcast Impossible Way Of Life has found a rapidly growing audience of esteemed indie (and not-so-indie) musicians around the world.
“It all became clear during the tours for Shuggie,” says Innes of the F&RNR’s impetus, “For one reason or another, everything that required a synth or drum machine would break; or our keyboardist was busy. We ended up playing more and more shows just the four of us. It felt really rock and roll. So we just went with it and started rehearsing the set this way, and kinda rethinking about how we wanted to travel and tour. It really started to feel and sound like the music we actually listen to and adore.”
The joy of living in familiar tones with your best friends is crystal clear on the quick and dirty single Adore You, in which Younger summons his inner Joey Ramone. “Tonight we’re gonna play our hearts out… We got more roots than a family tree / And I Adore you”. The verses are about loving rock n’ roll and the choruses are about loving a person and it doesn’t really make much sense except that in the context of the conveyed feeling, it makes perfect sense.
“This is a straightforward, fun record, made by four people in a jam space,” continues Innes, “and the thing is, it was probably the easiest and most fun record we’ve ever had the privilege of making.”
I think the point here is that music can be serious, and the pursuit of building a career in music can involve a great deal of struggle, but music can also be fun. And, if four best buds are going to love each other for as long as Yukon Blonde have, perhaps it must be fun in order to last. Perhaps that’s why this album feels so settled and comfortable. They’re older, wiser, and back in the pocket of the energy that spawned the band in the first place.
Listening to this album, I’m reminded of those sweethearts I met back when we were kids, excited to be paid in beer, playing to twenty people. That special concoction of sludge and sophistication. Two of them may have cut their hair since then, but none have lost their huge smiles. Yukon Blonde has lived the dream of rock n’ roll aspirations, survived the perils and reality of what that actually means, and are still making music together for the right reasons.
On Waiting On A Call, a splendor of chunky riffs and vocal harmonies, Younger laments the required patience of an unrequited situation. “Here I am just waiting on a chance / Like a gambler in a bad romance.” It’s a sentiment every struggling artist can commiserate with, and there may be no greater analogy for pursuing a life in music.
If you’re going to go it alone out there, you may as well have company. I love that twenty years in, Yukon Blonde are still leaning on each other and tapping the well of their bond. And what better glue is there to bond them than Friendship & Rock n’ Roll?-by Dan Mangan

Fancy Pants is proud to present 7-Time World DJ Champion VEKKED at Capitol Music Club on October 10th, 2025!
Vekked is one of the most decorated competition DJ of all time and the only DJ to win titles in every category of the DMC World Championships. For his final live competition, he debuted a custom-built turntable guitar named the “Frankenscratch” which is now a staple of his live shows and tours.
On the party rocking side, Vekked has headlined major festival stages at Shambhala Music Festival, Wicked Woods, Vibrant Music Festival, Fozzyfest, in British Columbia, Tribal Gathering in Panama City (Panama), Enigma and Stress Free Festivals in New York (USA), and Kame World in Auckland (New Zealand), Under Pressure Festival in Montreal, House of Paint Festival in Ottawa, Connect and Emotion Festivals in Saskatchewan and Evolve Festival in Halifax, just to name a few. His talents have taken him on multiple headlining solo tours from coast to coast across Canada, and the U.S.

Dubbed by Metal Hammer magazine as 'Sophisticated Thrash with Deathly Touches', the Canadian metal outfit Untimely Demise (circa 2000) has been inscribing their mark on the metal scene by harmoniously blending influences like Megadeth, Testament, Death, and Arch Enemy, into an ambitious package that places paramount focus on guitar-work and musicianship. Having toured Canada extensively for 16 years, the group has built a reputation as formidable headliners, but also as capable support for genre heavyweights such as Suffocation, Death (DTA), Goatwhore, Death Angel, DRI, Razor, Demolition Hammer, Pestilence, 3 Inches Of Blood, Warbringer and Toxic Holocaust.
Receiving numerous accolades, the band garnered nominations for a Sirius XM Canadian Independent Music Award for Metal Group of the Year in 2012, as well as a 2017 Western Canadian Music Awards nomination for Metal/Hard Music Group of the Year. In 2014, the ensemble toured England, Belgium and Germany with Florida death metal legends Massacre which has served to augment the band's international following. By 2016, the group had released it's 3rd full length album Black Widow and went on to tour Canada with Act Of Defiance. Riding hot off the momentum built from touring across Canada in 2018 supporting Obituary, Pallbearer, Skeletonwitch, Havok, and The Black Dahlia Murder, in 2019 Untimely Demise played the iconic Headbangers Open Air festival in Hamburg, Germany, alongside Exciter, Sanctuary, and Queensryche. The group's fifth album Maverick was released on November 26th, 2022. A new EP is slated to be released in late 2025.

HAZZERD:
Hailing from the Great White North, the thrash quartet HAZZERD was initially formed by drummer/lead vocalist Dylan Westendorp and guitarist Brendan Malycky, two Calgary teens who were inspired by the early work of thrash legends such as Overkill, Metallica and Anthrax. The group self-released their debut EP, “Victimize The Innocent,” in 2014. The following year, the band recruited then-18-year-old lead guitarist Toryin Schadlich. In 2017, soon after solidifying the group's lineup with the addition of bassist David Sprague, HAZZERD recorded their full-length debut, “Misleading Evil,” which was released via Canada's World War Now Records. 2019 saw HAZZERD catch the attention of M-Theory Audio after being featured on Gimme Radio, where Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine championed the group as a promising thrash hopeful. He also included the band on his personal list of record collection picks, where HAZZERD were one of only two up-and-coming artists listed. Their sophomore effort, “Delirium" release in 2020 getting great critical response including Sonic Perspectives calling it “an album that embodies the best of thrash and heavy metal,” while Metal Injection wrote “rip-roaring… leaves absolutely no survivors in its wake.”

One might be tempted to think of the Deep Dark Woods as a band steeped in capital-T tradition, and that may be true, but now nearly two decades into their life as one of Canada’s finest folk-roots ensembles, that tradition is one of their own invention. The voice of founding member Ryan Boldt sits at the forefront of the band, and it doesn’t take long to reveal that he is a master of subtlety and shading, working in the lineage of iconic singers like Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Rick Danko, and Jason Molina.Boldt, a relentless lifelong listener of music, says “It’s all I do. When I’m not playing music, I’m listening to it, trying to find songs that make me feel an aching pain in my chest.” Accordingly, his singing is full of highly emotive nuance and an elegant, relaxed precision that makes it seem downright effortless, a perfect vehicle for the band’s particular brand of updated folk music. Fellow travellers like keyboard whiz Geoff Hilhorst, veteran drummer Mike Silverman, and Evan Cheadle round out the Deep Dark Woods unit, and they are often assisted by like-minded collaborators such as singer-songwriter Ellen Froese, Erik Nielsen, Leon Power, and the acclaimed duo Kacy & Clayton. This crew creates a powerful combination and has amassed a pile of celebrated albums, EPs, and a host of nominations from music awards outfits from across the country. Together they recall classic units like The Band, mid-period Wilco, and American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, but also legendary late ’60s UK groups like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and Steeleye Span.Originally from Saskatchewan and now based in Southern Ontario, The Deep Dark Woods take up a deep tradition of forlorn storytelling, drawing lines from Celtic folksongs to country blues, John Fahey to Shirley Collins. Scientist by day, DJ by night. Brenda’s life is a dynamic blend of science and music. A classically trained pianist and saxophonist, music has been a lifelong defining force. Active in Chicago’s underground scene since the late 90s, Brenda is now a smartbar resident, A&R for Format Recordings, and co-curator of Format events and the Format.FM podcast series.
While her sets maintain consistent themes of darker, harder, hypnotic techno, she also explores moments of ethereal sound, harmonious melodies and jackin’ stompers. An advocate for women in both music and science, Brenda, who holds a PhD in molecular and cellular biochemistry, champions diversity in all pursuits. She finds mentoring deeply rewarding and is committed to giving back to the underground culture—building community, fostering connections, and empowering others.

PAY WHAT YOU CAN

When attempting to provide an overview of a big story – one that encompasses both the myriad achievements of its subjects over a span of several decades and the impacts of those achievements – you can take two routes. There’s the “just the facts” approach, where you list off the people, places, and things that populate the tale, and then there’s another road that winds through the hows and whys behind the names and numbers. Looking at the story of Canadian indie rock institution Sloan, the temptation to look through both lenses is strong.
For those who prefer the factual take, there are certainly enough noteworthy events and experiences peppered through the band’s over 30-year history to make for a good yarn. There are the various musical incarnations that flowered in the rather fertile indie music scene in the Halifax, Nova Scotia of the late 1980s and early 1990s that brought bassist and vocalist Chris Murphy, guitarists/vocalists Jay Ferguson and Patrick Pentland, and drummer/vocalist Andrew Scott together – bands such as The Deluxe Boys, Happy Co., No Damn Fears and Kearney Lake Road that anyone of a certain vintage who hails from the Canadian coastal city will recall fondly. 
There’s the first recorded appearance in 1991 of what could be their earliest signature tune, “Underwhelmed,” that landed on a very hard-to-find compilation of Halifax acts called Hear and Now, which – combined with a chaotic but explosive self-promoted showcase during a Halifax music festival – brought them to the attention of various record labels, including the label du jour of the early 1990s, Geffen Records imprint DGC. 
That tidbit leads to the next chain of events – signing to DGC and releasing their first album, 1992’s Smeared, recorded in the same home studio of Halifax producer Terry Pulliam as the Hear and Now session at roughly the same time, but preceding that with their own indie release, the Peppermint EP, on their own label, murderecords. Propelled by support from a newly influential network of college radio stations and indie-friendly print publications, the band toured the U.S. and Canada before setting up shop in New York City to record their second full-length, Twice Removed, with producer Jim Rondinelli.  
And here we have the first big plot twist of the fact-based version of the Sloan story. Somewhat bored with the shoegazey, Abba-meets-My Bloody Valentine approach to their songwriting that was so well documented on Smeared, and immersing themselves in the bare-boned sonic templates of The Beatles’ “White Album” and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours while traversing the continent in tour vans, the band turned in to DGC an album that was stripped of the manic, fizzy energy of the debut – replaced with a clarity and cleverness that augmented the catchiness of such songs as “Coax Me”, “Snowsuit Sound” and “People of the Sky”. But that approach flew in the face of what was “shifting units” at the time, and DGC was, to use a predictable pun, underwhelmed by an album that would go on to be named “the best Canadian album of all time” by Canada’s Chart Magazine.
While this turn of events would kill most bands (and has in many cases),  for Sloan it led to perhaps the most impressive array of facts and figures in the story to date. Discouraged by response to the new album by their label and staring down the prospect of finishing out a
contract with a disinterested benefactor, the band contemplated winding down in 1995, playing a handful of rapturously received shows and recording one last hurrah in the Halifax studio of producer/engineer Laurence Currie for an album to released on murderecords. That album, 1996’s One Chord to Another, would prove to be a benchmark in the Sloan story, racking up hit singles in “The Good in Everyone,” “Everything You’ve Done Wrong” and “The Lines You Amend” and giving the band their first gold album, and their best selling album to date.
From there, the facts lead to the next big chapter in the story – the release of Navy Blues in 1998 and the band’s embrace of riff rock, leading to such arena-ready singles as “Money City Maniacs” and “She Says What She Means” resulting in another gold-plus album and tours of Japan, the UK and Australia. That success spurred the band on to greater artistic heights – the highly regarded Between the Bridges came quickly after, in 1999 – and a glance at the band’s discography further illustrates the scope of ambition within Sloan when it comes to their recorded output, with not one but two double albums in their studio recordings (2006’s Never Hear the End of It and 2014’s Commonwealth). Celebrating their 20th anniversary with 2011’s The Double Cross, the band began to explore its own legacy with sumptuous reissues of Twice Removed, One Chord to Another and Navy Blues, while also striving to add to that legacy with such strong, strident efforts as 2018’s 12 and 2022's Steady.
So those are the facts. But between those bridges there’s a wealth of information and experience that takes this story somewhere else – beyond the realm of “successful Canadian rock band” to “venerable indie rock institution” status. And yes, that’s the second time we’ve used the word “institution,” but hear us out.
Sloan is that rare band that has an ethos that accompanies its discography. From those early gigs in the basement of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design to the present day, the band has eschewed the typical star-making machinery that puts one member as the driving creative force, with the rest of the band serving as trusted accomplices. Sloan boasts four singing, songwriting multi-instrumentalists, all of whom contribute to the final fabric woven into each album. As a result you have a depth and breadth of music that defies simple characterizations like “power pop” or even “indie rock” – 2001’s Pretty Together balances ornate chamber pop with fist-pumping rockers, while later efforts such as Never Hear the End of It and 12 contain multitudes in their track listings, ranging from Dylanesque streams of consciousness to short, sharp shocks of hardcore. But somehow, it all remains quintessentially Sloan.
That comes down to another integral part of this ethos we’re banging on about. From day one, the lineup of the band has remained unchanged. Through thick and thin, geographical relocation from Halifax to Toronto and who knows how many challenges along the way, the band has stayed intact. Sure, many can point to the band’s practice, perhaps inspired by their hardcore and post-rock heroes, of splitting the earnings evenly. But there’s more at play here. There seems to be a shared understanding between both the band members themselves and their devoted audiences around the world that Sloan is the sum of its parts, and if one member were to leave for whatever reason, that would bring the story to a close. You can call this commitment – to an ideal, to friendships, to the music itself. But it resonates through the songs, through the live performances, and through the relationship the band has with their fans.   
Ultimately, whichever route appeals most to you when looking at the big story that is Sloan, as you wind your way to the present day, there is one last thing worth considering – one bit of news that could be the starting point for the next attempt at approaching this story in the years ahead. In 2025, some 30-plus years on from when it all began, with the release of their 14th full-length album Based on the Best Seller, the tale is – thankfully – far from over.
“It's not a challenge to make a 14th album,” Jay Ferguson says, “But sometimes it's a challenge to think of a new overarching theme for a 14th album (and The Kinks’ 14th album was Soap Opera, essentially a TV play and complete story arc set to music, so clearly Ray Davies didn't have that problem). Our band has the capability to perform different styles within the rock/pop (or pop/rock) sphere, but it's often hard to harness the group to adhere to one particular style or theme. That's okay though. With four songwriters, we tend to make music that perhaps doesn't always naturally hang together under one (opened) umbrella but that's our style, and that style is continued on Based on the Best Seller. Nevertheless, whether it's Chris harmonising on my songs, Patrick harmonising on Chris' songs or Chris and our keyboardist Gregory vocally backing-up Andrew, I think those elements help tie together this (and previous) Sloan albums.”
