This intimate program for violin, viola da gamba and lute/guitar, will enlighten Festival attendees to the blossoming of Spanish baroque music after El Siglo de Oro (Spain’s “Golden Century”), which intriguingly blended the diverse cultures of the Hapsburg Empire which existed across Europe and the Americas, as well as drawing on Spain’s Moorish past.

About the event 
The annual Spark to Flame concert, presented by the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music, is a beloved tradition that celebrates and nurtures the next generation of musical talent at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. 
Open to all Conservatory students, soloists are selected through a rigorous audition process and then mentored by Conservatory faculty in the weeks leading up to the performance, including special rehearsals with a full orchestra. 
This year’s concert, taking place on Saturday, February 21, 2026, will shine a spotlight on exceptional student soloists, joined by an ensemble of their peers, faculty, and professional musicians for an unforgettable evening of inspiring music.

Concert description: 
The Italian ‘Modern Style’ of music that would mark the future of western music was no stranger to Spain, not least because the Kingdom of Naples was part of the Hapsburg empire.  This Italian fashion was also championed by the second wife of Philip V, Elizabeth Farnese, who was influential in attracting the Neapolitan Domenico Scarlatti to the royal court in Madrid.  The Spanish composer José de Nebra likely greeted Scarlatti as he was harpsichord teacher to the Portuguese Barbara of Braganza, future queen to King Ferdinand VI. Both Ferdinand and Barbara had a profound passion for music, and their reign reflected a true musical paradise, dominated by musicians such as the celebrated singer Farinelli.
 
Soprano Rachel Allen has gone from singing in the Pacific Baroque Festival as a member of the Victoria Children's Choir and studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music to appearing in the concert halls of London and Europe and on the BBC. We are pleased to welcome her back to perform cantatas by the Spanish composer José de Nebra (a work unearthed a mere 25 years ago in the archives of the cathedral of Guatemala City) and the Neapolitan Domenico Scarlatti, best known for his 555 keyboard sonatas.

With ringing bells, distant drums, lavishly ornamented motets, and ancient plainsong, organist Abraham Ross will present an evening of diverse pieces from one of the most distinctive corners of the keyboard repertory: baroque organ music of Portugal and Spain. In a period marked by a trove of treatises and sources, the invention of new pipework and case designs, and the presence of the organ in both courts and cathedrals, it is evident that Iberian patrons considered the organ most capable of the sublime in music. Throughout a 250-year period of political upheaval, changing borders, and pressuring outside tastes, the idioms practiced by organists maintained their forms, developing within a microcosm relative to the rest of Europe. The written repertory exhibits an unexpected blend of stylistic influence, owed to a unique coexistence of a lingering Mozarabic diaspora, imperial conquest and exploitation of the Americas, and the religio-political leanings of authorities in the southern kingdoms.

The private performer/volunteer dinner will include hot meals and non-alcoholic beverages, with the option to buy drinks from the cash bar. The Community Mingler portion will have light snacks and desserts, as well as a cash bar. Both will include gluten free and vegan options.
✨Accessibility:✨ 
The venue is all one level with no step to enter/exit. There is an accessible, all-gender washroom that is large enough to fit a wheelchair comfortably and includes handrails and a lowered sink. Additional washrooms are located upstairs. There is a shin-high step up to the stage, however a ramp can be set up. A sensory-friendly area will be set up with dimmer lights, fidget toys and colouring pages. 
✨Activities✨

Community mural: We will have three canvases set up with paints and markers with the prompt of “What does burlesque mean to you?" Performer and community members are encouraged to paint, draw and write to create collaborative pieces of art. The resulting paintings will be added to the raffle, the proceeds of which go back into supporting the festival.

 

Group Improv Burlesque: Attendees will be able to sign up the night of to participate in a group improv burlesque-off. Groups will work together to create an improvised group number and then perform. Groups will have approximately 20 minutes to work on their number. Props and costume pieces will be provided in a range of sizes. 

 

Local Performer Spotlight: In addition to the improvised burlesque, we will also have performances from two local performers.

CelloFest 2026 opens with a dazzling evening featuring acclaimed cellists Desmond Hoebig, Minna Rose Chung, and Brian Yoon, joined by pianists Lorraine Min and Laura Lowen. This cello extravaganza spans centuries of repertoire, with works by Bach, Debussy, Chopin, Mehmari, Morlock, Cassadó, and Popper, to celebrate the instrument's rich, expressive voice.
 
Desmond Hoebig: Desmond Hoebig is a former Professor of Cello at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and has enjoyed an international career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral principal. A prizewinner at the Munich International Competition and the Tchaikovsky Competition, he has appeared as soloist with major orchestras across North America and abroad. Former principal cellist of the Cleveland, Houston, and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestras, he is also a Juno Award-winning chamber musician and a longstanding presence at leading music festivals.
 
Minna Rose Chung: Korean-American cellist Minna Rose Chung is Professor of Cello at the University of Manitoba and co-author of CelloMind: Intonation and Technique, an internationally acclaimed pedagogy method. Her forthcoming co-publication, The Ultimate Fun in Thumb Position (2026), continues her innovative contributions to cello literature. An active soloist and chamber musician, she tours with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble and performs regularly with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Chung is the founder and director of Project Rio, supporting Rio Cello in Brazil, and a recipient of multiple national awards for excellence in performance and pedagogy.
 
Brian Yoon: Brian Yoon enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, adjudicator, and teacher, and serves as Principal Cello of the Victoria Symphony. He was also recently appointed as Co-Head of Strings at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. A First Prize winner of the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competition, he has performed extensively across Canada in repertoire ranging from Bach and Beethoven to George Crumb and Metallica, and has received support from the BC Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Sylva Gelber Music Foundation.
 
Lorraine Min: Lorraine Min is a Steinway Artist and critically acclaimed pianist renowned for her poetic artistry and brilliant virtuosity. Praised by The New York Times for her “impeccable phrase-shaping and crystalline sound,” she has performed internationally in major concert halls across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. A dynamic soloist and chamber musician, Min is a prizewinner of major international competitions and is frequently heard on CBC and ABC (Australian) radio.
 
Laura Loewen: Praised for expressivity, virtuosity, and committed playing, Canadian collaborative pianist Laura Loewen is an extremely versatile musician equally comfortable in traditional and contemporary repertoire. Her regular duo partners include Allen Harrington, saxophone, Minna Rose Chung, cello, Colin Ainsworth, tenor, Tracy Dahl, soprano, and Monica Huisman, soprano. Dedicated to sharing her passion for ensemble playing and coaching, she is Professor of Collaborative Piano and the Vocal Coach at the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music.
 
CelloFest 2026
CelloFest is a three-day event at the Victoria Conservatory of Music featuring renowned cellists and pedagogues Desmond Hoebig (former Professor at Rice University; former Principal Cello of Cincinnati, Houston and Cleveland orchestras) and Dr. Minna Rose Chung (Professor at the University of Manitoba; co-author of CelloMind).
CelloFest begins with the Opening Concert on Friday, May 22 at 7:30 pm in Alix Goolden Performance Hall. Following Friday’s concert, Dr. Chung and Mr. Hoebig will each lead a masterclass for young aspiring cellists on Saturday, May 23 on the stage of AGPH. CelloFest concludes with a Final Concert on Sunday, May 24 featuring the participants of the masterclasses and a cello choir.

The Italian composer Luigi Boccherini was attached to the Court of the Spanish Infante, Luis Antonio (1727–85), brother of King Charles III of Spain (1759–88). For having married a common citizen, King Charles exiled the Infante from the Madrid Court to the Arenas de San Pedro palace in Ávila province. As a courtier of Luis Antonio, Boccherini joined the exile, and found himself with much time for composition, and there completed more than one hundred quintets for various instruments.
 
Of the ‘Musica notturna delle strade di Madrid’, Boccherini wrote: ”The piece is absolutely useless, even ridiculous, outside Spain, because the audience cannot hope to understand its significance, nor the performers to play it as it should be played.” We will do our best to prove Boccherini wrong! The music appears in the 2003 feature film 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World'.

Chefs serve inspired creations and signature dishes for you to savour, while beverage offerings range from a diverse collection of wines, cocktails, craft beer, cider, non-alcoholic drinks, and locally roasted coffee.
