​Why stay at home when there’s a whole world to explore? In the organ lofts of Europe’s great cathedrals, Baroque keyboard players had unparalleled resources for musical expression, with all the grandeur and drama you could wish for. This program will take us on a musical tour of seventeenth- century Europe, stopping at the great churches of five major cities to hear the resident organists improvising: Seville, Rome, Augsburg, Passau, and Lübeck. The organ at Christ Church Cathedral provides an ideal venue for this program, which features some of the gloriously colourful South German music that inspired Helmuth Wolff to build this instrument.

This program includes one of J.S. Bach’s best-loved cantatas, the “wedding” cantata, BWV 202, along with the sunny violin concerto in E Major, and a ‘fictive’ wedding cantata compiled by Dorothee Mields of iindividual movements from other Bach works. A feast of joyful music!

In the privacy of a comfortable music room, Baroque keyboard players could explore musical ideas that were too intimate—or too irreveren —for a formal public setting. This program explores the capabilities of the Brombaugh chamber organ at St Barnabas Church to capture the sounds of home: laughter and tears, songs and dances, and even the sounds of a few domestic animals.

About the event 
The annual Spark to Flame concert, presented by the Ann & George Nation Conservatory School of Classical Music, is a cherished event that nurtures the talents of young, emerging artists as they take their first steps toward professional musicianship. In this milestone year, as the Victoria Conservatory of Music celebrates its 60th anniversary and 25 years of performances in the Alix Goolden Performance Hall, the event promises to be more memorable than ever. 
Open to all Conservatory students, soloists are selected through a rigorous audition process and then guided by Conservatory faculty in the weeks leading up to the concert, including special rehearsals with an orchestra. 
This year’s performance, held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, will spotlight seven exceptional student soloists, accompanied by an ensemble of peers, faculty, and professional musicians for an evening of inspiring music.

Santur player, composer, and cultural inventor Amir Amiri dwells at the centre of a unique musical universe where ancient inspiration, dazzling virtuosity, and bold creativity meet. Surrounding himself with outstanding collaborators from the worlds of jazz, classical and world music, Amiri fearlessly transcends genres and borders, exquisitely transporting his ancient instrument into the musical conversations of our time. Born in Tehran, Iran, Amiri is a master of the santur, a 72-string instrument dating from approximately 500 BCE.
Since arriving in Canada in 1996, Amiri has created numerous groundbreaking ensembles including the Amir Amiri Ensemble, inspired by the fluidity of musical influences in Iran. The Amir Amiri ensemble is an ensemble of virtuoso musicians from the Persian tradition: Amir Amiri (santur),  Abdul-Wahab Khayyali (oud), Reza Abaee (ghaychak),  Omar Abu Afech (Viola), and Hamin Honari (percussion). Inspired by the diversity and fluidity of the many musical influences of Iran, the Amir Amiri Ensemble creates an engaging and distinctive sound fusing the refinement of traditional and spiritual Persian music with folkloric and modern elements. In seeking to expand the boundaries of these musical traditions, balancing heritage and innovation, they find that the possibilities are limitless. In the eclectic musical universe of Amir Amiri Ensemble, borders are abolished to make way for bewitching alchemy, a mystical conversation between these kindred-spirit musicians
