It’s been over 20 years since Daniel Lapp released an album of his own fiddle playing. Of course he hasn’t been sitting idle and quite the opposite. Since his last fiddle album, Reunion, released in 2002, he’s taught the fiddle to hundreds of students, toured and recorded with his electronic band, Lappelectro, as well as playing live shows with Rickie Lee Jones, Gord Downie, Elvis Costello and Lou Reed to name a few. He’s been around and off the continent many times and has developed an innovative program for Contemporary Music at the Victoria Conservatory of Music of which he’s the Artistic Director. His annual Home For Christmas Concert which features his 180 students has grown to two full houses in the Royal Theatre and will celebrate 23 years in 2025. No, he hasn’t been sitting around. During this time he’s also composed hundreds of fiddle tunes, collected 3000 original BC Tunes from 300 composers and started a new record label called Woodbox Records to promote, preserve and archive BC’s 150 year history of fiddle music. Now it’s time for him to play and record and he’s thrilled to share the new album with you onstage with 3 of his former students, all world travelers in their own right. And he just turned 60! Come celebrate a new era of Daniel Lapp!

Comedy Night at The Fernwood Inn 2024

The Civic Orchestra presents the final concert of their 41st concert season at Dave Dunnet Community Theatre on Saturday, May 24th.
The Orchestra and their Music Director, Grant Harville, are thrilled to collaborate with violinist Megan Karls, performing Sibelius' Violin Concerto! The program will also feature works by Tchaikovsky, Munktell, and Canadian composer Gary Kulesha.
Come early to enjoy a pre-concert talk with Grant Harville at 1pm in the theatre and get interesting insights into the music you're about to hear!
 
Tickets are $25 general admission, $20 for seniors, $10 for students. Children 12 and under are free with an adult, however we ask that you select a free Children's ticket when purchasing your adult ticket so that we have an accurate seat count. Maximum children's tickets per adult is two (2). Any additional children's tickets may be purchased at the $10 student price. Thank you.
Please note that while Civic Orchestra concerts are family-friendly, most programs are not suitable for very young children. If attending with children, please seat yourself near an exit so that you may easily take your children to the lobby during a performance if they become disruptive. Megan Karls
Violinist Megan Karls enjoys a multi-faceted career across the American West as the Concertmaster of the Wyoming Symphony, and as a violinist with the Spokane Symphony, Boise Philharmonic and the New Mexico Philharmonic. Her musical leadership is in high demand as a frequent guest concertmaster in the region, including repeat appearances with the Billings Symphony, Bozeman Symphony, Opera Montana and the conductor-less String Orchestra of the Rockies. Her recent solo concerto performances have been with the Northwest Civic Orchestra, Milwaukee Philharmonic, and the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra, of which she is a former concertmaster.
She spends her summers performing with the Britt Festival Orchestra, as Principal Second Violin of the McCall Musicfest Orchestra, and guest teaching across the world in San Salvador, El Salvador, Tlahuitoltepec, Mexico and around the United States. She has performed in Europe with Assisi Performing Arts Festival and toured Bulgaria with Symphony Vratsa, continually melding her love of music with a love of travel.
Megan is a 2015 recipient of the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award and in 2021 became the first woman in classical music to ever receive the Montana State Arts Council’s Artist Innovation Award. She has been an artist-in-residence with OpenAIR in Montana and at the Tongue River Artist Residency in Dayton, Wyoming. She holds degrees with honors in violin performance and political science from Lawrence University and the University of Iowa. Karls makes her home in Spokane, Washington where she enjoys hiking and exploring with her husband, David.

Direct from Tanzania: THE ZAWOSE QUEENS
There is spirit and fire in the music of The Zawose Queens, coming direct from Tanzania! There's the vibrations of the ancestors, coming through on traditional instruments — soaring chizeze fiddle, buzzing illimba thumb piano, ngoma drums that chatter and thunder — and voices that go deep, high and out there. There's the connection to nature, to ceremony and ritual, in their dance-inspired fusion, their blend of the organic, harmonic and modern-day electronic. There are lyrics that tell, in their native kigogo, of the passion for music, the wonders of life. Of pride in environment, in tradition. In their East African roots.
Pendo and Leah Zawose showcase the fluid polyrhythms and rapturous polyphonic singing of the Gogo (aka Wagogo) people of the arid, hilly Dodoma region of central Tanzania. The most famous exponent of this musical tradition is the late, great Dr Hukwe Zawose (Pendo’s father and Leah’s grandfather).
Maisha, the debut album by The Zawose Queens, marks the first time that women from this famous musical family take their place as lead vocalists and performers. The resulting collection of songs range from the stripped back and traditional-sounding to those treated with subtle electronic elements, with beats and drops and found sounds and switch-ups.

Experience an electrifying evening of genre-defying music as the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music presents its annual Faculty Concert.
Under the direction of Daniel Lapp, this concert brings together our world-class faculty for a high-energy showcase spanning jazz, folk, rock, hip-hop, electronica, and more. From innovative originals to fresh takes on beloved classics, this is a night that celebrates the vibrant soundscape of contemporary music.
A special highlight of the evening is the introduction of this year’s Henwood Family Prize for Emerging Artists winners—outstanding young musicians (ages 12 to 21) who will either take the stage for a live performance or have their music professionally recorded at the Conservatory.
Come and celebrate the creativity of our faculty and the next generation of emerging artists!

Motherhood

A 30-year veteran of the Canadian music scene, Richard Moody has toured the world with such luminaries as Deva Premal, Miten, The Wailin’ Jennys, Steven Fearing, and The Bills. Tobacco & Rose is his solo project: a collection of songs, inspired in part by experience with psychedelic and medicinal plants from the Amazon and the Pacific Northwest.

After years of study in classical viola in France as a teenager, Richard found himself unexpectedly thrust into the club scene of the early nineties, touring across Canada with seminal Manitoban folk-rock group Acoustically Inclined and offering his instrumental skills on hundreds of different recordings by artists in a variety of styles.
Despite a certain amount of success, Richard felt that there was something missing from life, and this led him on multiple trips to India to study yoga and yogic philosophy. He spent several years as a yoga teacher in Canada, all the while keeping up his work as a musician-for-hire.
Then in a later period of meaning-seeking, Richard was introduced to the Amazonian plant-medicine ayahuasca, and he had the privilege of traveling to Peru to experience the mind-blowing, non-ordinary realities experienced by the Shipibo shamans of the upper Amazon. These shamans work with a variety of master plants used for healing and teaching, and they treat their patients with plants appropriate to their condition. It was Richard’s exposure to a few such plants that led to the writing of dozens of songs, many of them featured in this self-titled debut recording, Tobacco & Rose. Richard cheekily calls the music “plant-based,” and many of the individual songs are in praise of, and indeed inspired by, a relationship with an individual plant. He states, “I often felt like I was not the writer, but an open channel, and that the plant was speaking through me.” This is, in fact, how many indigenous healers and shamans describe their own healing songs.
Says Richard, “The writing of these songs was a transformational, alchemical process, and they gave a sense of direction and purpose, but it wasn’t always easy. Some of it involved processing and releasing dark thoughts and patterns. The song ‘Broken Angel’ tells the story of writhing in agony on the ayahuasca ceremony floor, processing the suicide of a close friend. ‘Bride of Suffering’ is a somber ballad about attachment to suffering and how addictively comfortable that can be. But ultimately, the overarching feeling of the record is one of hope, of opening to our somatic selves, and of reconnection with nature. ‘Wooded Vale,’ written at a 10-day silent retreat, describes the bliss of simply sitting in the natural beauty of an island on the Salish sea and noting the wonder of the natural world as it unfolds. ‘Tara’ speaks of our ability to arrive at a place of happiness and equanimity, as we find peace in our hearts and minds.”
Tobacco & Rose is an effort to integrate twin passions of music and healing, and to imbue music with meaning that uplifts and inspires. The lyrics speak of a spirituality grounded in the natural world, in the body, and in authentic practice. At the same time, the musical aspect draws from more traditional western influences, ranging from the counterpoint of J. S. Bach to the chord progressions of a golden age of popular song. They feature Richard’s sophisticated finger-style acoustic guitar approach and owe a debt to the lineage of ’60s and ’70s greats like Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell. Many have drawn comparisons between Richard and the English folk magic of Nick Drake.

A Musical Banquet - Baroque Summer Intensive Faculty Concert

Opera Quest 2025 is pleased to present JÉHANNE, an operatic exploration of the extraordinary vision quest of the French heroine, Joan of Arc.
 
Composed by Opera Quest Artistic Director Colin Doroschuk, JÉHANNE will be developed for the stage in creative collaboration with a cast of emerging artists, singers, dancers, and an experienced production team of industry professionals.
 
The bilingual libretto will be in English and in French.
The World Premiere performance of JÉHANNE will be presented on June 27th, 2025 in the spectacular acoustic of the Alix Goolden Performance Hall.
 
The cast will feature three young emerging Canadian operatic artists:
Kathryn Riopel - soprano
Jessica Lyublinsky - mezzo soprano 
Natalie Vong - mezzo Soprano 
 
The production will include an orchestra of acoustic, electric, and electronic instruments and a chorus comprised of talented vocalists of the Victoria Conservatory of Music.

In 2011 he released his first full length album "Parts Unknown" on Endless Flight and later that year began releasing new projects on his own Red Motorbike imprint.
