An ode to the Florida Everglades, this immersive essay explores the historical and ongoing challenges of this endemic ecosystem through the writings of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, testimonies of Miccosukee educator Betty Osceola, and other current occupants of the land. Sasha Wortzel weaves a captivating and interconnected portrait of this unique watershed, known for its rich biodiversity, which is the place of her upbringing, asking how we might reckon with the past and weather the coming storms together.  
River of Grass is a present-day reimagining of Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s groundbreaking book, The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which transformed the public’s understanding of the area from worthless swamps to an essential source of freshwater, enabling the ecosystem to endure, just barely, today.

After bonding over a mutual love of The Beatles, drummer Chris Hooper introduced Kevin Kane to his younger brother Tom Hooper in 1977. While still attending elementary and junior high school in Kelowna, BC, the trio began learning to play their instruments together during regular Friday night jam sessions in the basement of the Hoopers’ suburban home.
Influenced in equal parts by the British invasion of the 60s and the DIY attitudes and immediacy of punk and new wave, the group took the name The Grapes of Wrath in 1983.
This year, Tom and Kevin are once again hitting the road as a duo to perform The Grapes’ music in an intimate and unplugged setting, telling the stories behind the songs and putting the focus on the harmonies and melodies of their timeless music. Sunday October 19.

This brand-new feature, directed by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi, delves into the ramifications of one family’s intense experience with mental health. It follows Maya, a multitasking mother who lives in Kolkata with her husband, Sundar, and their teenage son, Debu. She juggles three jobs as the family’s primary breadwinner, while also dealing with ostracization and neighbourhood rumours about Sundar, an unemployed ex-soldier suffering from PTSD. Debu is often left as his father’s primary caregiver, and the young man valiantly copes with feelings of affection and embarrassment in the face of his father’s daily struggles. After her husband disappears, Maya must fight to hold her family together in the face of an unexpected murder investigation and an unknown and very uncertain future. With highly engaging lead performances and a fresh perspective on both trauma and caregiving, Shadowbox is a poignant yet tense film that exposes prejudice and peels back the layers of obligation, love, and the complexities of relationships.

Director BioTanushree Das graduated from the University of Calcutta with a Masters in English Literature, and began her career as a theatre person – directing as well as acting. In 2011 Tanushree graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, with a Diploma in Film Editing. Tanushree‘s work as an editor has been screened to critical acclaim in film festivals around the world, including at Berlin, Locarno, Rotterdam, Rome, Pingyao, Hot Docs and Busan.
Born in Bangalore, Saumyananda Sahi studied philosophy at St Stephens College, Delhi before attending the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Saumyananda has worked as a cinematographer on a variety of projects, both factual and fiction, which have gone on to screen and win awards at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, Locarno and Rotterdam. He has been nominated for an Asia Pacific Award, Filmfare Award and was selected for the BAFTA Breakthrough India programme in 2022. His recent work includes ‘All That Breathes’ (nominated for an Academy Award) and the Netflix series ‘Black Warrant’.

Writing Hawa is the story of three generations of Hazara women from the same family in Afghanistan. With unique access, director Najiba Noori films her mother Hawa and her niece Zahra in their aspirations to emancipate themselves from patriarchal traditions. Forty years after her arranged marriage as a child, Hawa finally begins an independent life and begins studies to become literate. But with the return of the Taliban to power, her dreams, along with those of her daughter and granddaughter, are shattered as they face new daunting struggles.

She participated in the Close-Up program 2020-2021 and at the IDFA Academy in 2022. She joined AFP as a video journalist in 2019. Her new album, Among the Evergreens, is a deeply personal journey through time, tracing her path from youthful dreams to the wisdom ofexperience.
“It’s about being like a tree with all those rings around you, the layers of your life telling you who you are and where you've been,” she says. Imagery of the outdoors, of green valleys and trees shedding their leaves, infuses this new collection which is garnering high praise as one of her best.
Uncut Magazine describes Among the Evergreens as “thoughtful, luminous, expressive” and featured it as Americana Album of the Month for June 2025. Mojo Magazine’s four- star review glowed that these 10 new songs “are about as sweet as folk-Americana comes.”
Suzie brings her stories to life with her captivating voice and raw honesty. Inviting you into her world through poetic lyricism and mesmerizing melodies, she shares herexperiences from teenage-hood to motherhood. “Here I am making songs back among the evergreens, a prodigal daughter, who is now a mother, asking, who was I then and who am I now, where have I been and what did I learn along the way?”

Denis Côté's documentary Paul finds its eponymous protagonist figuring out how to take control of his life. Weighing 300 lbs and struggling with depression and social anxiety, the film chronicles Paul's unconventional path towards turning his life around. Paul finds solace in taking on the role of a "simp" (a man who excessively dotes on someone who doesn't reciprocate their affection). He spends his days on his hands and knees cleaning the homes of various dominatrices before going home and sharing his experiences with his burgeoning social media audience.
Côté crafts one of the year's most unconventional explorations of healing, self-improvement, and human connection. Paul emerges as a sweet and inspiring portrait of someone having the bravery to defy social norms in the pursuit of self-fulfillment. With shades of Wim Wenders' modest masterpiece Perfect Days, Paul suggests mindful commitment to repetitive tasks can strengthen resilience while bringing meaning and satisfaction to everyday life.

Brothers Ziad and Moody spend their last moments in the family home they’re forced to leave due to a scheduled demolition as part of the city’s development plans. To pass the time while they move the furniture outside, Moody turns on the TV, which soon blares news of Palestinian home demolitions in Sheikh Jarrah, Jerusalem, casting a somber shadow over their already melancholic last day.
Director BioMahmoud Ibrahim, a 24 year old Egyptian filmmaker. He was among the first class of students to graduate from the Higher Institute of Cinema in Alexandria in 2023. He is interested in the relationship between the individual and the city, and the intersection of collective and personal archives. His debut short film "The last day" participated in Berlinale International Film Festival 75 in the Forum Expanded. Mahmoud has worked as a director, producer, cinematographer, editor, and sound designer. He co-founded HandyCam Films, an independent production company that seeks to explore new art spaces and create alternative production methods, away from centralism.

'Everything has a voice'
Lips pressed against a mic with a determination to be heard, even in fragmented lines, distorting. Two gloved hands wave over a series of objects arranged on a large white table; a VHS player and CRT Monitor, a Cassette Player, three mixers, a camera, a power bar and several charging cells, the crackling electromagnetic static they emit made audible and interruptive. Their wires spill over the edge of the desk, entangled.
'Sound is something that you can feel beyond your skin'
“Listening Gloves” designed as an instrument to play different pulsing electromagnetic frequencies of curated technological artifacts through touch. In this process of amplification, they tune into sounds as though they are rhythms of a living being.
This is "Sandpaper Hammock", a solo multimedia performance series where improvised sound compositions are played off of technological artifacts in combination with original poetry recitations. Through sound, a story unfolds, inviting embodied feeling as a vehicle to share in ways that do not center language over sensation.
Statis is used as a material of resistance; the electromagnetic frequencies made audible are a sonic reminder of a friction that exists between surface and depth, a disruption of smoothness. During the set, the camera is turned onto the audience and the frequencies generated from a live feed on a CRT are an act of subversion.
This piece disrupts the focus by interrogating the nature of viewership through technology in the performance itself. People are asked to “watch themselves, watching me. Who remembers longer? The static, the screen, or the human being?'

Performer BioAliyah Aziz is a multidisciplinary storyteller, poet and musician who uses light to talk about shadows, and sound to physically move them through us. She uses disruption as a tool of resistance, embracing glitch and static to channel the friction that exists between the surface and the depth of the technology that we engage with. Her expressions take many forms, from multimedia moving collages of archived material, experimental sound and poetry compositions, interactive media installations, to live performances. I consider my practice to be an exploration of identity and the power that stories hold, from the history of our shadows to the projection of our futures.

Night 4 curated by Keisha Bell is a staged intervention with an exhibition and performance reimagining MG’s story by commemorating and bringing forward overlooked jazz legacies that resoundingly shaped experimental sound forever.
This year is special. As we celebrate 50 years of history & 20 years of X AVANT, we’ve gathered 5 curators to take over 918 Bathurst to enliven and celebrate 5 eras of precious sound. 
Keisha says, “In summer 2020, I saw Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz perform online and contacted him for composition lessons. A year later, I got to meet him in person when he performed with AfroHORN in Buffalo. They captured my imagination with a blend of Afro-Caribbean, jazz, and free improvisation. I discovered trumpeter Milena Casado on Bandcamp. When I saw that the first track was called “THIS IS MY HAIR,” AND she recorded a cover of “Unconditional Love”, I knew I was in for a treat.
Part of the mission of the MG is to “cultivate artistic experimentation and community through sound, music and sharing in the creative process.” Listening to both of these artists, I find their work easily aligns with this ethos. Their music transgresses boundaries while remaining rooted in the tradition of Black American music, encompassing the Americas from North to South.”
About the exhibition she adds, “Archie Alleyne (1933-2015) was a Toronto-based jazz drummer who performed with the likes of Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, and Stan Getz, to name a few. He was the first Black musician to perform in white clubs on Yonge street in the 1950s. Throughout his life, Alleyne collected photographs of Black Canadian musicians. This exhibit features pictures of early Black musicians who performed at dances and jam sessions at the Toronto chapter of the Universal Negro Improvement Association from the 1930s-1960s. Archie exhibited these pictures as part of a fundraising show in 2012 to support his scholarship fund for young artists. By remounting this exhibit here at the 50th anniversary of the Music Gallery, we are making a critical intervention into the city’s music history. Most of the Black artists depicted did not establish careers in music for numerous reasons, including racial segregation and exclusion from the Toronto Musician’s Union.”

In a setup reminiscent of musical chairs, participants rotate around the room, engaging with different individuals throughout the night. With twenty-four questions spread across six rounds, there’s plenty of time to get to know everyone. Between rounds, take advantage of the breaks to chat, laugh, and form connections.
