"She Kills Monsters" is a play about Agnes, who, after the death of her younger sister Tilly, discovers a Dungeons & Dragons module Tilly wrote.Agnes, initially unfamiliar with D&D, embarks on a journey to understand her sister better by playing the game. The play alternates between the real world and Tilly's imaginative D&D world, where Agnes encounters various monsters and characters inspired by Tilly's life and struggles. Through the game, Agnes confronts her grief, learns about Tilly's experiences as a lesbian youth, and ultimately comes to terms with their complex relationship

Julius Caesar depicts the most iconic historical-tragedy by William Shakespeare, following the violent fall of Rome’s most influential leader. The morally conflicted Brutus and the cunningly coercive Cassius lead a conspiracy of senators & patricians to assassinate Caesar in the name of liberty and stability of the Roman Republic, only to trigger chaos, bloodshed and civil war. Through fiery oratory and calculated deception, both public figures and the Roman populace are manipulated and coerced into fiery fits of factionalism. Julius Caesar warns how populist appeals to fear and identity can accelerate the erosion of democratic ideals; reveals how easily power and emotion distorts truth, and turns noble ideals into instruments of control. In the end, the play’s tragedy surrounding Caesar’s assassination marks not one man’s death, but the tragedy of the death of the Republic.

      About the McMaster Thespian Company:
      The McMaster Thespian Company is a non-profit theatre organization specializing in developing and performing classical plays in new ways. Past shows include (but are not limited to) scripts and pieces from the classical Grecian, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras. MTC provides opportunities for students interested in performing, technical theatre, and production, and creates an inclusive forum for artists and technicians to develop and showcase their skills and talents. In the process, we cultivate theatrical performances that touch on a variety of social issues, bring theatre's origins and earliest pieces to life, and highlight the importance of live theatre at McMaster and in our surrounding community. The 2024-2025 school year marks MTC's 20th season.

 Unleash your creativity and curiosity in our Introductory Taxidermy Class! Designed for beginners, this hands-on course offers a fascinating glimpse into the art and science of taxidermy.
Class begins promptly at 10am and ends at 4pm.
We provide each student with either a skinned, cleaned, and tanned racoon, opossum, or rat hide depending on the workshop you are taking.
The first half of class is focused on preparing your form, setting the eyes, test fitting and mounting the hide, as well as grooming.
After our first 30-minute break class shifts towards plaque preparation and mounting your project.
The class runs for approximately 6 hours with two 30-minute breaks throughout the day.

Sunset Moths Entomology Class $150USD Unlock the artistry of entomology in our Introductory Bug Pinning Workshop! This hands-on experience is perfect for nature enthusiasts, aspiring entomologists, or anyone interested in the intricate craft of insect preservation. Join us as we guide you through the techniques of preparing and pining insects, transforming them into beautiful, display-ready specimens.
The AM class will begin promptly at 10am and last 2.5 hours.
You will learn the foundational skills of bug pinning, including safe collection methods, proper handling, and the step-by-step process of pinning and mounting your specimen.
Class exclusive!: Two specimens for the price of one!
Your first specimen will be a moth or butterfly that will be used to practice your newly learned pinning technique. Once you’ve completed this step we will move on to creating your unique frame and placing your Sunset Moth in its display case.
We will familiarize you with the tools of the trade, pinning supplies, insect boxes, and preservation techniques. We’ll provide all necessary materials for your workshop experience. Explore creative ways to arrange and display your pinned insects, turning your specimens into captivating works of art that reflect your personal style.

Our newly added scorpion workshop delves into the art and science of preserving and pinning a specimen with a unique exoskeleton.  In addition to creating a unique pose for your scorpion you will also create a habitat where it will be displayed.

We will familiarize you with the tools of the trade, pinning supplies, insect boxes, and preservation techniques. We’ll provide all necessary materials for your workshop experience. The lauded JUNO-nominated blues-rock artist hails from Southern Ontario and has steadily earned accolades, and the attention of blues aficionados from around the World. Leaving nothing behind when he steps to the stage, Mackenzie offers showgoers a powerhouse performance, commanding his guitar with sophistication and prowess beyond his years.
For nearly a decade, Maple Blues Award winner Spencer Mackenzie has been writing and recording true blues, showcasing the raw emotion and honesty the genre demands. There’s a familiarity and ease with which he approaches the music, almost as though it flows through rather than from him. In honour of Black History Month, Hugh’s Room Live presents an evening celebrating the deep influence of Black history on urban music. This special night brings together Toronto singer Robert Ball, JUNO Award–winning urban artist Aphrose, and Quisha Wint,                                                                                                           
for a powerful and diverse musical experience. Rooted in soul, rhythm, and storytelling, the evening highlights how Black musical traditions continue to shape contemporary urban sound across genres and voices. Expect compelling performances, rich musicality, and a night that honours history while embracing the present.
Robert Ball: Robert Ball’s sound spans soul, neo-soul, jazz, and easy listening. He has it all: a global audience; an extensive list of tour dates; numerous artist collaborations; and many live broadcast appearances! His 18-year career has led him to his own brand of music - delicately tuned but also inspirational.
Aphrose: Aphrose is a powerful presence in Canada's music scene, capturing the heart of R&B and neo-soul. Recently nominated for a 2025 JUNO Award in the Adult Contemporary Album of the Year category for her album Roses, it's evident that she's on a path to great success.
Third Artist: Quisha Wint. This show is curated by Quisha Wint, a prolific musician in her own right. She is president of QW Productions Corp, Chair of the Toronto Blues Society, co-founder of Dandelions in The Wind, and a member of the Hugh’s Room board (Co-Chair of HRL Programming). We are proud to present this show on Saturday, February 21.

Contemporary harpist/vocalist Elisa Thorn (pronounced eh-lee-sah) makes music that drifts easily between folk, pop, jazz, post-rock, and experimental traditions—music she likes to think of as good bath-time listening. Rooted in curiosity and accessibility, her practice embraces unconventional sound worlds while inviting listeners in with warmth and openness. An avid collaborator, Thorn has spearheaded projects including Gentle Party, HUE, and The Giving Shapes, and has contributed to recordings and performances with artists such as Haley Blais, Ora Cogan, Loscil, Khari McClelland, Wallgrin, and Mauvey. In celebration of Black History Month, join Catherine Chambers of Let’s Make It for a hands-on workshop exploring self-care through the lens of the African and Caribbean diasporas.
Participants will craft their own luxurious foot scrub using natural ingredients rooted in Black food and wellness traditions, such as sugar, coffee, and coconut. Guided step-by-step, you’ll learn how to blend clays, exfoliants, and natural fragrances while discovering the cultural and skin-nourishing significance of each ingredient. The scrub will produce a rich lather and deliver soothing, revitalizing effects when massaged into the skin.
By the end of the session, you’ll take home two 240 ml jars of your personalized scrub—a celebration of heritage, care, and creativity. All materials, instruction, and museum admission are included.

This Valentine’s Day, Something and Two of Hearts Chapel are teaming up to marry queer couples at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre for a BIG GAY WEDDING. 
You can expect a market full of sweet and sexy vendors selling everything from chocolate to vibrators. While you peruse, you’ll be serenaded by everyone’s favourite queer 60s inspired band, SEXTÊTE. This event will take over the entire venue at Buddies, which means there will be DJs and dancing all night long!
Later in the evening, you’ll be invited to witness the marriage of queer couples from across Canada by Two of Heart’s drag officiant, Cherri Burstyn! We’ll laugh, we’ll cry, and we’ll celebrate love in the only way we know how: debauchery.

Bad Baby and Mayme Joach are a tricky and wilful band; Aidan McConnell, Jack Johnston, Evan Cartwright, Charliecello Lukashevsky and Alex Lukashevsky; a smoky intergenerational blend of experimental folk, blues, and rock n roll. Good Company is a new monthly showcase hosted by Takes a Village Music.
Takes a Village Music is a Toronto-based collective of rotating artists, producers, and musicians, led by producer and creative director HMLT (Corey Wong). At its core, the project is about building community—creating a space where creatives can gather, connect, and make music together. The group’s catalogue is born from a weekly session known as “Potluck,” where different artists come together to contribute their own flavour.The roster is ever-changing, featuring contributions from artists such as Eric Ryan, kaiyel, Nilo Blues, Winnie Wong, Chara Kai-Le, Keanu Richal, Koladae, Sonya Tsu, and many more. Every track is produced and curated under the guidance of HMLT, ensuring a distinct yet ever-expanding musical identity.Takes a Village Music is more than a band—it’s a living, breathing creative ecosystem where music, food, and community.

Alfie Zappacosta is undeniably one of Canada’s premier songwriters and performers with charttopping hits and a recording and acting career that has spanned 40 years. He continues toevolve as an artist by “doing it his way”, an effort that has been rewarded with an impressivesong catalogue and a discerning loyal fan base.
Having decided on a career in music during his teens, then setting his sights upon being aguitarist, Alfie Zappacosta would go on to become one of Canada’s most promising andaccomplished rock stars. When his vocal dexterity and song writing proficiency were uncoveredby a publisher while writing for his first original band Surrender, events would be put in motion tochampion Zappacosta (dropping his first name) as a solo artist and bring him to the world’sattention. “Start Again”, “Passion”, “When I Fall in Love Again” and “Nothing Can Stand In YourWay” became staples on Canadian adult contemporary radio and Zappacosta became apersonified rock star.
In 1987, Walt Disney’s Danger Bay would bring Zappacosta an episode written specifically forhim titled “Rock Star”. In the same year, he penned and sang “Overload” exclusively for themulti-platinum soundtrack Dirty Dancing and Loverboy would record Zappacosta’s “That’sWhere The Money Goes” for their Wildside album. In 1988, he was awarded JUNOs for Albumof The Year and Most Promising Artist, an American Music Award for Most Popular Album ofThe Year, and named the Canadian Publishers Music Association’s Best Rock Star.
The release of Innocence Ballet in 1996 would introduce Alfie Zappacosta (taking back his firstname) and give centre stage to his true rich vocals, his mastery at romance, his astute take onrelationships and his advanced knowledge of music. He was rewarded for his efforts withnumerous award nominations in the smooth jazz genre and a performance with the ThunderBay Symphony Orchestra in 2005. Zappacosta has polished his live concert performancesexposing his sophisticated, intimate and intense personality. His performances deliver a blendof acoustic, jazz and pop music prompting the listener to engage soulfully.
As for the hits that originally brought Zappacosta to the world’s attention, he hasn’t turned hisback on any of them. You’ll hear them in his program performed the way they were originallywritten and meant to be heard. Don’t miss out on this cross-genre legend coming to Hugh’sRoom Live Friday February 13.
