Description
Celebrated cellist and Gainesville native Julia-Hyunji Lee is returning for an evening performance with pianist Andrew Barnwell at 7:30 p.m. February 6, 2026, at the Jackson N. Sasser Fine Arts Hall at Santa Fe College.
Tickets are available from Showpass: https://www.showpass.com/julia-lee/ or the Sasser Fine Arts Hall box office.
They will perform a program comprising Robert Schumann: Fantasiestucke, Op. 12, Johannes Brahms: Cello Sonata in e minor, Op. 28, Nadia Boulanger: 3 pieces for Cello and Piano, and Dimitri Shostakovick: Cello Sonata in d minor, Op. 40.
Earlier in the day, they will conduct a masterclass for students in the Santa Fe College Fine Arts programs.
Lee is a passionate chamber musician, performing alongside esteemed artists such as Clive Greensmith, Noah Bendix-Balgley, Catherine Cho, Ara Gregorian, Robert McDonald, Inon Barnatan, Blake Pouliot, Merry Peckham, Julie Albers, Molly Carr, and Bion Tsang at the Four Seasons Chamber Festival, La Jolla Music Society SummerFest, Perlman Music Program, and the Music in the Vineyards Festival in Napa Valley.
In orchestral settings, Lee has served as principal cellist of The Juilliard Orchestra for four consecutive years, performing under conductors such as Marin Alsop, Gustavo Dudamel, David Robertson, David Chan, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and Mei-Ann Chen. Her recent performances include a side-by-side concert with the New York Philharmonic, a substitute appearance with the New World Symphony, and principal cello in Juilliard’s 2x4 Kennedy Center collaboration with Jaime Laredo and Jennifer Ko.
At Buchholz High School she co-founded the schools’ string orchestra – the school’s first string program – making music education accessible to more students.
She earned her bachelor’s of music from The Juilliard School.
Andrew Barnwell, who finds chamber music especially invigorating, was a founding member of Trio Gaia, New England Conservatory’s most recent Trio-in-Residence and prizewinners in the WDAV Young Chamber Musicians Competition, Premio Trio di Trieste International Music Competition, Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and the Plowman National Chamber Music Competition. Appearances with the trio included concerts at Jordan Hall, the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, the Harvard Musical Association, and the Davidson College Concert Series. The trio dedicated itself to inviting audiences into conversation through chamber music and presented numerous recitals and educational workshops in the US, Panama, and Japan.
Born in Massachusetts, he began his piano studies with Heather Rogers Riley before relocating with his family to Copenhagen, Denmark, where he studied with Søren Pedersen. Barnwell attended high school in Seattle, Washington, and was first a student of Mark Salman before joining the studio of Dainius Vaičekonis, and later, renowned pedagogue Robin McCabe. Andrew has earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Graduate Diploma from the New England Conservatory.
