The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra’s first presentation of 2026 will showcase creations by WJO writers Neil Watson, Monica Jones, Greg Crowe, Brady Gill and others.
Since 2018 the WJO has received five Western Canadian Music Award Nominations and one Jazz Artist of the Year Award (2025), and virtually all the music recorded was commissioned by or written for the WJO. It’s time to explore our new projects in the new year - guaranteed there will be swing involved!
About WJOThe Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is Canada’s first community-based, non-profit professional jazz orchestra. Founded in 1997 (registered charity in 2000), the WJO has matured to become an important part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape, reflected in the ongoing support the organization receives from the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Winnipeg Foundation, and other sponsors. The mandate of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is to be an instrumental force in the promotion and development of big band jazz in Manitoba and beyond, through performance, composition, recording and education.

Join us for a for a night of fiddle music, laughter, and entertainment! J.J. Guy (inductee in the North American Fiddler's Hall of Fame) and Gordon Stobbe (inductee in the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame, and member of the Order Of Canada) come together for an intimate concert of banter, fiddle music, and fun!
They will be joined by two time Canadian Grandmaster fiddle player Daniel Gervais and three time Canadian Grandmaster, Winnipeg's own Patti Kosturuk. Accompanied by a stellar band including The King of Cape Breton piano and fiddle, Troy MacGillavray, and the intrepid Daniel Koulack on bass and banjo, this is a special one-time performance you will not want to miss!

Hiss Golden Messenger of Durham, North Carolina, a vehicle for singer-songwriter M.C. Taylor, calls up a wide spectrum of American vernacular music — from Archie Brownlee to the Staple Singers, and from singer-songwriters Van Morrison to Townes Van Zandt. After relocating from California to North Carolina, Taylor began to record material under the name Hiss Golden Messenger. Though his initial recordings featured only his voice and guitar recorded to a cheap cassette recorder, recent Hiss albums have incorporated horns, strings and choirs. “(Taylor's) songs are smart and complex enough to betray a bigger and more insane question: What makes a person happy?"

Join us for the Finale Concert of the Canadian Jazz Summit, a standout evening featuring Canadian jazz superstars Tara Davidson (saxophone) and Alex Samaras (voice) at the stunning Desautels Concert Hall.
On February 7 at 7:30 pm, they’ll share the stage with professors and students from the University of Manitoba’s Jazz Studies program, including the dynamic University of Manitoba Jazz Orchestra.

About the Jason Marsalis Quartet
Born into New Orleans’ first family of jazz, Jason Marsalis - youngest son of the late pianist-educator Ellis Marsalis Jr. and brother to Wynton, Branford, and Delfeayo - has carved his own unmistakable path as both a virtuosic drummer and one of today’s most imaginative voices on the vibraphone.
Marsalis launched his career behind the drum kit, and by his late teens he was touring the world with Marcus Roberts, digging deeply into mainstream jazz, fusion, Brazilian influences, and the full spectrum of New Orleans traditions. His sideman credits read like a modern jazz honour roll: Joe Henderson, Lionel Hampton, Jon Batiste, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, among others. He has also served as a Jazz Ambassador for the U.S. State Department.
In the early 2000s, Marsalis shifted his creative focus to the vibraphone - a move that has since positioned him as one of the instrument’s essential contemporary innovators. Through his Vibes Quartet and numerous collaborations, he has pushed the American vibraphone lineage forward with wit, clarity, and a deep sense of swing. In 2011, he became the youngest-ever recipient of the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship when the Marsalis family was honoured at the White House and the Kennedy Center. His 2013 album In a World of Mallets topped the CMJ radio charts at Number 1.
For this special concert - featuring clarinetist Joe Goldberg, pianist Kris Tokarski, and drummer Gerald T. Watkins - the Jason Marsalis Quartet offers a vibrant, forward-looking celebration of Lionel Hampton, created with the blessing of the Lionel Hampton Estate.
Marsalis approaches Hampton’s repertoire not as archival material but as living, breathing music: joyful, hard-swinging, and fully alive in the present. Expect ringing vibes, deep grooves, and the kind of electric stage energy that defined Hampton’s legacy - channelled through Jason Marsalis’s own blend of humility, fire, and unmistakable New Orleans spirit.
