Mark May 31st on your calendars and be prepared to sample many varieties of the award winning cheeses that Bothwell Cheese provides while enhancing the flavour when pairing them with a host of wine options from different countries.  The event will also feature a few beer options from local breweries and some food samples from Bothwell’s own Country Style Meats and Steinbach’s well known Prairie Oils and Vinegars.
 
This year will feature a string quartet of live music to enhance the evening's atmosphere.  We look forward to seeing you there!

BIG DAVE MACLEAN nominated for “BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR” at the 2025 Juno Awards for his album "THIS OLD LIFE”, McLean has been earning accolades since 1969, when he received his first guitar lesson from the legendary John Hammond. He's received multiple awards including a Juno for 1992’s Saturday Night Blues and in 2019 he was made a member of the ORDER OF CANADA in recognition of his influence in the field of Delta and Chicago blues.  http://www.bigdavemclean.ca

He holds a diploma in classical guitar from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City and is a skilled builder of guitars, ukuleles, and mandolins. Jazz Winnipeg’s Centennial Series at the Fort Garry Hotel marks the passing of three major artist centennials. Join us as we celebrate 100 years of legendary Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson with Will Bonness, “King of the Blues” B.B. King with Brent Parkin, and “The Velvet Fog,” crooner Mel Tormé with Zachary Rushing.
About Brent Parkin
Brent Parkin is a Winnipeg-based Canadian blues and guitar legend. Brent honours the blues with a mix of multiple styles, including Chicago, swing, country, and even some rock ‘n roll.
In the early ‘70s he co-founded several blues bands, including the popular band Houndog. In the last 5+ decades he has been part of backup bands for such legends as Bo Diddley, Gatemouth Brown, Otis Rush, Billy Boy Arnold, Johnnie Johnson, Jimmy T99 Nelson, and many more. As well, he has opened shows for such greats as James Cotton, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, and John Prine, just to name a few.
A career highlight was sharing the tour bus and stage with B.B. King and his band as his opening act on a Western Canadian tour in 1983. Expect to be delighted with first hand accounts of the legendary man himself! 
About B.B. King
Riley King was born September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in northwest Mississippi between the towns of Indianola and Itta Bena, about 100 miles south of Memphis, in the Delta bottoms. His schooling was sporadic; like many other black country children of his area, he worked in the fields when he was needed. After the death of his mother when he was in the 10th grade, he quit school and worked as a farmhand on a nearby plantation.
King became interested in music at an early age. He sang in local churches when he was four, and his uncle taught him a few chords on the guitar as soon as he was old enough to hold the instrument. His aunt had an old Victrola, and he heard the 78 rpm recordings of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Peetie Wheatstraw, and Leadbelly on her machine, along with the recordings of his older cousin, Bukka White, the famous "bottle-neck" guitarist. The neck from a glass bottle was often cut or broken off to use on one's finger as a slide to bend and slur the notes on the guitar to create the harsh, sometimes haunting Mississippi Delta style of blues.
In the early 1940s, King honed his guitar skills and formed a gospel quartet, called the Elkhorn Singers, and performed at local churches. He served for about a year in the U.S. Army during World War II, and sang blues for the troops stationed at Camp Shelby, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and at Fort Benning, Georgia. After the war, he returned to Indianola and continued to do odd jobs, and occasionally sang gospel in church and on the streets. In 1945 and 1946, he sang with the St. John Gospel Singers in broadcasts on WJPM radio in Greenwood and WJPR radio in Greenville.
A year later, King hitchhiked to Memphis and stayed with Bukka White until he was able to support himself. After working amateur shows at the W. C. Handy and Palace Theaters, his first professional breaks came in radio, where he performed as the "Beale Street Blues Boy," later shortened to Blues Boy King, and finally B.B. King, under which name he gained his remarkable reputation.
King first recorded in 1949 for the Bullet label in Nashville, and a year later he signed with the Bihari Brothers' RPM label. In 1952, his cover of "Three O'Clock Blues," a song originally recorded by Lowell Fulson, topped the R&B charts for 15 weeks. This record was followed by several R&B hits in the 1950s, including "You Didn't Want Me/You Know I Love You" (1952), "Woke Up This Morning" (1953), "You Upset Me Baby" (1954), and "Sweet Little Angel" (1956). Between 1950 and 1961, King recorded more than 200 sides for RPM and Kent, many of which were on albums in the low-priced Crown catalogue.
King performed extensively on the Southern black club circuit, and also appeared at major venues like the Apollo Theater in New York City. In 1962, he signed with the ABC label, and five years later he launched the ABC Bluesway series with Blues Is King.
In 1969, his recording of "The Thrill Is Gone" was a crossover hit, appealing to both black and white audiences. "My audience had started mixing before that, " King said, "but that really pushed it over the top.... It was soon after that the Rolling Stones invited me to tour with them.... A lot of people heard me on that Rolling Stones tour that hadn't heard of me before."
Throughout his career, King has toured incessantly, often averaging more than 275 concerts a year. He was among the first American musicians to tour to the Soviet Union, and has traveled to Africa several times. Over the last two decades, King has been a profound influence on both rock and roll and rhythm and blues. Many imitate his economical phrasing, his precise slurred or bent notes, and his unique left-hand vibrato.

About Zachary Rushing
Zachary Rushing is a jazz vocalist, songwriter, lyricist, and arts administrator living on Treaty One Territory. His musical world encompasses many genres and styles, but has deep roots in the Great American Songbook.
Whether performing originals, standards, or covers of favourite composers ranging from Cole Porter to Stephen Sondheim to Fred Hersch, Zachary is a natural storyteller with a gift for interpreting lyrics. Often drawing comparisons to Mel Tormé, his smooth and velvety singing style lends itself to songs of a golden vintage.
Zachary can be heard working in various groups around Winnipeg both as a bandleader and sideman. When not performing, he spends his work days fostering community in the local music scene as the Director of Programming at Jazz Winnipeg.
About Mel Tormé
Mel Tormé was a child actor and musical prodigy. He began singing at the age of three, studied piano and drums, and at 15 published his first song which was recorded by Harry James. In 1942 he joined the band of comedian Chico Marx as drummer, singer, and vocal arranger, and in 1943 he formed his own group, the Mel-Tones, and appeared in his first film, Higher and Higher, with Frank Sinatra. The Mel-Tones, a precursor of contemporary vocal jazz, were popular during WWII and enjoyed several hits on their own as well as with Artie Shaw’s band.
In 1947 Tormé began a solo career, recording popular songs in his smooth-as-satin voice which reached into both the baritone and tenor range, performing in the best clubs, and appearing in films. His version of “Blue Moon” from the film Words and Music (a fictionalized biography of the Richard Rodgers/Lorenz Hart partnership) topped the charts in 1949, and he picked up the moniker “The Velvet Fog.” By the 1950’s he gave up crooning and turned to jazz, recording some of his most memorable work with the inimitable arranger Marty Paich and top West Coast musicians. Tormé’s perfect intonation, enviable range, sensitive phrasing, and improvisational ability brought him great acclaim as a jazz singer. But he was also recognized as an actor, earning an Emmy nomination for his 1957 role in “The Comedian” on TV’s Playhouse 90.
As jazz began to lose favor in the ‘60s, he recorded a few crossovers hits, to the chagrin of his jazz fans. From the ‘60s through the ‘90s he appeared on dozens of television shows as both performer and actor: “The Judy Garland Show,” Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show,” and nine episodes of “Night Court.” He followed a rigorous schedule of personal appearances that took him from Las Vegas to London, where in 1977 he recorded with a symphony orchestra, a session which he called his personal favorite. His recording career gained momentum when he won two Grammys for his 1982 and 1983 recordings with George Shearing.
Tormé was also a composer and writer. His most famous composition with lyrics by Bob Wells is “The Christmas Song” which Nat “King” Cole took to the charts in 1946 and which Tormé didn’t record until later in his career. It is ASCAP’s most performed holiday song of the 21st century. Tormé also wrote “Born to Be Blue,” a song cycle called “California Suite,” “Welcome to the Club,” and “County Fair,” which appeared in the 1949 film So Dear to My Heart. His six books include an autobiography, It Wasn’t All Velvet&semi a book on drummer Buddy Rich, Traps, The Drum Wonder: The Life of Buddy Rich&semi and a book on his vocal influences, My Singing Teachers.
Tormé was a force in popular music for over sixty years, a consummate professional who maintained his vocal prowess until he suffered a stroke in 1996.

Centennial Series: Zachary Rushing Celebrates 100 Years of Mel Tormé

Powered by the distinctive, honeyed croon that delivered her from the Paris streets to concert halls, these ten unabashedly personal songs, all co-written by the versatile Peyroux, deftly interweave jazz, folk, and chamber pop, with themes ranging from the confessional to the political, from whimsy to yearning. In every note, Peyroux digs deep, rendering this exquisite work with the disarming grace and gravitas of an artist in peak form.For the ardently civic-minded Peyroux, Let’s Walk continues the scintillating conversation with her audience – and with the world at large. “This music is part of a dialogue,” she says. “That’s what art is. The longtime studio veteran knew the time was ripe to highlight Peyroux’s incisive, often topical lyrics meshed with Herington’s ear for melody and arrangements.Album opener “Find True Love” came to Peyroux during the George Floyd murder trial. Like “Let’s Walk,” “Find True Love” is an irresistible entreaty to join a journey. First stop: New Orleans. “I was searching for solace in the American landscape,” Peyroux says. “I was imagining the first step toward healing, if there could be a future worth living for.” Herington’s pulsing, finger-picked acoustic guitar, interwoven with Andy Ezrin’s shimmering keys, propel Peyroux’s message of steadfast hope in the face of encroaching darkness. Says Peyroux: “The ideas in this song let me imagine a place where I can become a better me.”An astonished Peyroux says the title track came to her in a dream – including “the words, the rhythm, and the form” – a rarity for her. “The lyric refers to mass mobilization of marchers for civil rights around the world,” Peyroux says. “A voluntarily unified action in support of a humanitarian ideology. Herington fleshed out “Let’s Walk” with gospel textures, organ, and a steady, infectious beat, enlisting buoyant harmonies from Grammy-winning artist Catherine Russell (David Bowie, Rosanne Cash), along with vocalists supreme Cindy Mizelle (Bruce Springsteen) and Keith Fluitt (Patti LaBelle, Michael Jackson). Their churchy call-and-response with Peyroux’s burnished lead elevate “Please Come On Inside” and “Blues for Heaven” into a revival of emotion.“How I Wish” is Peyroux’s response to the horrific murders – over a period of three months in 2020 – of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. This melancholy, minor key waltz acknowledges her privilege, and her anguish. “2020 was the year I woke up,” she says. Immersing herself in the work of such writers as Cornel West, she was struck by West’s repeated references to Black musicians as “Love Warriors,” responding to oppression with game-changing music: Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Marian Anderson, to name a few. “These are my teachers and my heroes,” Peyroux says. “African American music has been the one constant, true path in my life.”One such mentor was Dan William Fitzgerald, aka “Showman Dan,” for whom Peyroux wrote a rollicking ode after her longtime friend passed away in 2017. As leader of the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band, the American-born expat took a very young, inexperienced Peyroux under his wing to perform across Europe, as she says, “on the street, in the underground, the public square, jazz clubs, restaurants, and private homes of dukes and duchesses.” Like many Black artists before him, Fitzgerald found he could get more artistic traction in France than he could in his homeland and conveyed his love of street theater to Peyroux, who’d moved with her mother to Paris at age 12.While in Paris, Peyroux noticed the custom of bourgeois parents buying an apartment for their grown children. For the satirical “Et Puis,” the bilingual singer assumes the role of that young adult as one “both blissfully ignorant of their privilege and consciously disgusted by its injustice.”For “Nothing Personal,” Peyroux bravely grapples head-on with sexual assault – both her own, and others. She reflects that the perpetrator should “learn every aspect of the consequence of their actions and be party to recovery in whatever way is welcome by the victim.” Herington’s mournful, insistent piano and acoustic guitar recall the intensity of “Plastic Ono Band,” with Peyroux’s painful-yet-resolved vocals intimate and beautifully unadorned.Peyroux changes gears with the playful, Caribbean-flavored “Me and the Mosquito,” and rapid-fire spoken-word album closer, “Take Care.” The former, inspired by Hank Williams’ hilarious classic “Fly Trouble,” offers perhaps the most humanist treatise ever on what Peyroux calls “the elusive singular mosquito which can ruin a night’s sleep.” For the latter, Peyroux “prayed to the spoken-word genius of Linton Kwesi Johnson” to deliver a heartfelt advisory re: avoiding the pervasive toxins in food, clothing, and modern culture in general. “I don’t recommend a morose existence,” she recites over Herington’s ska-flavored guitar and sampled marimba, “life is an art and perspective needs distance / But ya gotta get lean and scrappy and fight / If you’re gonna begin to get livin’ right.”When the road beckons this spring, Peyroux’s community of loyal fans is in for a treat. Thanks to serendipitous delay, her collaborators Herington and Scheiner, and the very perspective she shares in “Take Care,” the spare, slow burning Let’s Walk material will be set free in venues around the world, effortlessly dovetailing with Peyroux’s beloved versions of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Tom Waits (to name a few) classics. As she learned in her busking years, a great song can wield powerful magic, and inspire the best in any type of crowd. With Let’s Walk, Madeleine Peyroux takes full ownership of that magic.

About Erin Propp: 

Erin Propp is a Juno-nominated, Western Canadian Award-winning singer and songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Critically acclaimed for her work in jazz and contemporary music, Erin is a highly sought-after vocalist, collaborator, clinician, educator and mentor, lending her voice to an array of recordings and projects.
Most recently, Erin has recorded and performed with Grammy-winning Attacca Quartet and is preparing to release an album later this year, featuring Attacca, Joey Landreth (of the Bros. Landreth), Fabio Ragnelli and Julian Bradford. This album is a debut for Erin as a solo artist in her own rite, singing from behind the piano and penning songs and arrangements all her own. Musically, the songs are an exploration of her folk and gospel upbringing paired with her jazz education, while the lyrical and emotional quotient is mined from early years in motherhood, of quiet days spent surrounded by babies and books, with a voice that is sometimes quiet in its acknowledgement of relational struggles, and sometimes impatient and passionate seeking resolve. Aptly named “The Longing Years”, Erin’s solo writing and delivery is powerful, inventive, and intimate.

Richard Bona is a Grammy-winning musician, one of the most accomplished international bass players, composers and multi-instrumentalists. With his unique sound and vocal gift he is continuously representing his African origins. Bona’s music addresses the continent’s traditions, culture, beauty and issues. His purpose, and the way he connects with his audience has turned him into a staple name in world, jazz and Afropop music.
He is currently producing and recording for Latin and Brazilian artists in the realm of pop, Brazilian songbook, Flamenco and Caribbean music. 
Richard Bona has toured, composed, recorded, and created musical forms of art with the greatest: Herbie Hancock, Harry Belafonte, Steps Ahead, Quincy Jones, Chick Corea, Buena Vista Social Club, Cesária Évora, Sting, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Stevie Wonder, Bobby McFerrin, Chucho Valdés, George Benson, Oumou Sangaré and many more. Along the diverse notable collaborations Richard has also taught Jazz Improvisation at NYU and is constantly teaching and mentoring young talents throughout the world. He’s also a TED speaker and ambassador for various non-profit projects.
He is highly involved in developing better music business practices and ethics. His Signature Series collaboration with Italian-based MARKBASS has positioned him as one of the most creative and best-selling bass amp and bass guitar tailor-made manufacturers in the world.
Constantly touring around the world and exploring new musical directions, Richard continues to redefine his sound, while still performing live. He’s currently working on new Afrobeats, Afropop, Latin and Flamenco projects throughout Europe, the US and Latin America.

About Dr Henry Band

Dr. Henry Band is an 8-piece group that plays Afro Beat music uniquely blended with many other genres. Conceived and led by Nigerian-born bassist Henry Onwuchekwa, the group is primarily influenced by legendary musician and fellow Nigerian Fela Kuti. However, the band’s songwriting process is inspired by many native genres of Nigerian music such as igbo highlife, gospel and salsa; as well as jazz, funk, r&amp;b and soul.
The band comprises of both seasoned and emerging musicians, bringing together years of performing experience with fresh energy. While the band is just beginning its journey in the Canadian music community, their collective musicianship and experience brings many grooves to their stages and moves to their audiences.

About Jimmie Herrod:
With “a voice like a beacon of hope” (Seattle Times), vocalist Jimmie Herrod brings singular power and expressivity to his globe-trotting career as a singer, songwriter, and entertainer on stage and screen.
Herrod first came to worldwide prominence as a finalist on the NBC nationally broadcast television show, “America’s Got Talent,” earning the rare “Golden Buzzer” recognition from actress Sofia Vargara. After his season, Jimmie starred in the Las Vegas show America’s Got Talent - Live at Luxor, and competed once more on America’s Got Talent: All-Stars.
Since late 2017 Herrod has toured with the band Pink Martini performing across the US, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and Europe. Outside of performing arts centres and jazz clubs, Herrod is regularly featured with major orchestras across the US, and has shared the stage with artists such as Lalah Hathaway, Brian Blade, Vince Mendoza, Renee Fleming, and many more.

About George Colligan:

George Colligan is widely regarded as one of the great jazz pianists of his generation, with an international reputation as a multi-instrumentalist (piano, drums, trumpet, organ, keyboards), composer, accompanist, teacher, bandleader, and blogger (jazztruth.blogspot.com). A winner of the 2015 DownBeat Critics Poll for keyboards, Colligan has a long-standing association with jazz legend Jack DeJohnette, including a recent U.S. tour with “An Evening with Jack DeJohnette and Savion Glover.” He has also led his own trio, featuring jazz luminaries Buster Williams and Lenny White, on tours across the U.S. and Canada.
As an in-demand accompanist, Colligan has appeared on over 130 albums, performing alongside jazz icons such as John Scofield, Cassandra Wilson, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, Chris Botti, and many others. As a bandleader, his prolific output includes 36 albums, with his most recent release, King’s Dream (PJCE Records, 2022), spotlighting collaborations with faculty and alumni from Portland State University (PSU).
Colligan, a former New York City resident for 15 years, now resides in Portland, Oregon, where he is a Full Professor at PSU. His academic and artistic contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including two Region Arts and Culture Council grants, a South Arts Jazz Road grant, and a PSU Faculty Development grant. He has received the PSU College of the Arts Dean’s Council Award for Research, Scholarship, and Creativity (2020) and was named Researcher of the Year by the PSU College of the Arts in 2021.
Over the years, Colligan has performed, recorded, and toured with an extensive list of jazz greats, including Lonnie Plaxico, Gary Bartz, Benny Golson, Miguel Zenón, Tom Harrell, Steve Coleman, Eddie Henderson, Vanessa Rubin, Dave Weckl, Michael Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Sheila Jordan, the Mingus Big Band, Al Foster, Lee Konitz, and many others. His artistry continues to enrich the jazz world through both performance and education.

Jovelle is an emerging jazz-influenced pop singer-songwriter making a name for herself in Winnipeg’s vibrant music scene. She has performed at prestigious events such as the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival and the Jazz at the Fort Garry, drawing listeners in with her heartfelt sound and warm stage presence.She has also showcased her talent at iconic venues such as the Burton Cummings Theatre, Centennial Concert Hall, and the Canada Life Centre. Jovelle is set to release her debut EP, Miss U Like Manila, this summer—a collection of jazzy, feel-good tracks that combine the charm of vintage romance with a fresh, modern twist.
