Fergus Scottish Festival

"Conducting Against the Room” is led by an international research partnership between McMaster University, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW, Switzerland), and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (Germany), together with Danish conductor Prof. Morten Schuldt-Jensen who has brought together a local "pop-up choir" of singers from the GTHA.
The project explores how singers and conductors adapt to different room acoustics and how this may shape vocal effort, ensemble sound, and the audience experience. 
 
The Concert
A 15-minute "Science Snapshot" from LIVELab's Dr. Lauren Fink will open the concert event, explaining the virtual acoustics system of the LIVELab and the mobile physiological sensors LIVELab has to measure singer and audience reactions. Audiences will be invited (but absolutely not required!) to participate in our live research study. This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance from the McMaster Research Ethics Board MREB#7202
An approximately 45-minute choral concert program will follow the Science Snapshot, consisting of music from composers Gustav Holst, Anton Bruckner, Maurice Duruflé, as well as renowned Scandinavian composers. 
 
There are two chances to see the concert:
Sunday, April 19th and Monday, April 20th, 2026
On both days, doors open at 7pm and the concert starts at 7:30pm, running approximately 1 hour.

Morten Schuldt-Jensen
Morten Schuldt-Jensen is an internationally acclaimed Danish conductor and choral specialist. Former Professor of Choral & Orchestral Conducting in Freiburg (until 2024), he was Chief Director of Choral Activities at the Leipzig Gewandhaus (1999–2006) and founder of the internationally renowned Gewandhaus Chamber Choir. As choir master, he has worked with world-class ensembles – including the Berlin Philharmonic – and alongside maestros such as Sir Simon Rattle and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

As they explore stories and artifacts dating all the way back to 1956, these students not only gain an appreciation for the history of the second high school built in Waterloo Region, they also gain an understanding of what it really means to be part of Eastwood’s story. Packed with pop, rock, and musical theatre hits spanning seven decades, Eastwood Live! is a celebration of community, identity, and legacy that seeks to answer the question, “What does it mean to be an Eastwood Lion?”

Class begins promptly at 10am and ends at 4pm.
We provide each student with either a skinned, cleaned, and tanned racoon, opossum, or rat hide depending on the workshop you are taking.
The first half of class is focused on preparing your form, setting the eyes, test fitting and mounting the hide, as well as grooming.
After our first 30-minute break class shifts towards plaque preparation and mounting your project.

Sunset Moths Entomology Class $150USD Unlock the artistry of entomology in our Introductory Bug Pinning Workshop! The AM class will begin promptly at 10am and last 2.5 hours.
You will learn the foundational skills of bug pinning, including safe collection methods, proper handling, and the step-by-step process of pinning and mounting your specimen.

Tom Rush is a gifted musician and performer, whose shows offer a musical celebration…a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become. His distinctive guitar style, wry humour and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues. Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor, and in more recent years his Club 47® concerts have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations.
Tom Rush began his musical career in the early ’60s playing the Boston-area clubs.Rush displayed then, as he does today, an uncanny knack for finding wonderful songs, and writing his own – many of which have become classics re-interpreted by new generations. (It is a testimony to the universality of his appeal that his songs have been folk hits, country hits, heavy metal and rap hits.) Signed by Elektra in 1965, Rush made three albums for them, culminating in The Circle Game, which, according to Rolling Stone, ushered in the singer/songwriter era. In the early ’70s, folk turned to folk-rock, and Rush, ever adaptable, saw more room to stretch out.. Rush returned with a splash in 1981, selling out Boston’s prestigious Symphony Hall in advance. Time off had not only rekindled Rush’s love of music, but it had also re-ignited music audiences’ love of Rush.
In 2012, he began a revival of his Club 47® shows at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Courtney Gilmour is an award-winning comedian and television writer. In 2017 she delivered a breakout performance at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal by becoming the first female to win the prestigious Homegrown Comics Competition as Canada’s top comedian. Courtney has been featured on multiple national broadcasts from festivals including the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, Halifax Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Vancouver as well as Kevin Hart’s LOL Network and The Howie Mandel All Stars Gala at Just For Laughs Montreal.
Elaine Gold is a comedian and storyteller. She was a featured storyteller on Tinder Tales for 5 years, performing on storytelling stages all over Toronto and Ontario. Elaine loves to honestly tell her hilarious life stories. She's old AF and loves playing the old lady card. Her last appearance at a Hutch show she had the audience howling with laughter. 
Tom Henry is a comedian, actor and writer from Toronto. His acclaimed Just for Laughs produced Stand Up Special, ‘66 Jokes’, can be found on Crave TV. He's appeared at festivals such as Just For Laughs, San Francisco Sketchfest and Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and has opened for comics such as Nate Bargatze, Nikki Glaser and Tim Meadows. He was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Stand-Up Newcomer in 2012. His album, ‘Tom Henry Kills’ reached number one on the iTunes comedy charts.  
Chris Robinson is one of the premier comics in Canada. In 2016 he was the runner-up at the prestigious homegrown competition at Just For Laughs in Montreal. Later that year he was crowned Sirius XM's Top Comic. A win that granted him $25,000--and a return to Just For Laughs Montreal, an appearance at JFL Northwest in Vancouver and his solo show at JFL42 in 2017. Chris is a working actor on Netflix, Amazon, CMT, and various TV and internet commercials. Now Magazine has described him as having "charisma and raw talent to burn." Catch this rising star live and you will not be disappointed.

Paul Hutcheson is a queer comedic performer, writer and producer. His six solo shows have been produced numerous comedic solo shows which have toured Canada and the United States, playing to sold-out audiences, glowing reviews and awards. The return of this beloved fixture of our home on Dundas has been full of learning and listening to new artists. For this special anniversary we've chosen our sweet Jane Harbury who hosted Discoveries at Hugh's Room on Dundas for over a decade. If you know Jane, you know she knows good music better than anyone. She is a respected music publicist with a great ear and an incomparable personality. We are proud to have her host this concert and know you will love the artists she brings to our stage. 
EWEN FARNCOMBE: Ewen is actually a “Rediscovery”, He was on a Discoveries show in May, 2011. This Toronto-based multiple Juno-nominated pianist / composer has earned the reputation as one of Canada’s best jazz pianists. During his years at Humber College he received several prestigious awards, including the Hnatyshyn Foundation Oscar Peterson award and the Downbeat Jazz Instrumental Soloist award in the Undergraduate category. While Ewen is quite at home playing with different artists and bands, he finds great joy in celebrating the rich history of the piano through the medium of solo piano, which he does to a high degree. He demonstrates a virtuosic ease of playing that coaxes the piano into beautiful song.
NOAH KOSTA: Noah Kosta is a 22-year-old jazz/pop artist captivating audiences across Canada with his distinctive voice and modern take on classic crooner music. Fresh off an appearance on Canada’s Got Talent, Noah continues to establish himself as one of the country’s most promising emerging performers. Inspired by the music of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Noah began performing at a young age and has appeared at major venues including Koerner Hall, Casino Rama, Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, Mel Lastman Square, and the International Beaches Jazz Festival. A Grand Prize winner of the LIVECITY™ Music Awards and the Long &amp; McQuade Singing Contest with John Santos, Noah has also worked with renowned artists and coaches including Elaine Overholt, Stanislas Vitort,Alma Deutscher, Bill King, and Charles T. Cozens. In 2026, Noah continues to light up stages across Canada with a blend of timeless jazz standards and modern jazz-pop.
JP LEBLANC: Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, JP grew up immersed in both English and French. He discovered the blues at 11 years old and recorded his first album by 17. The album earned an East Coast Music Award nomination. In 2024 he represented Atlantic Canada at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, cementing his place on the international stage. His most recent album, 2025’s “All In My Blood”, JP delivers his most ambitious work to date - an album rooted in Acadian pride, enriched by blues heritage, enriched by blues heritage and alive with heartfelt storytelling. The album written in Canada with lyricist Larry LeBlanc was recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Colin Linden. JP says: “Working with Colin and these incredible musicians felt like the culmination of everything I’ve worked for”
NANCY SIMMONDS: Nancy, born in London, ON, Nancy began her singer/songwriter career when she move to Toronto in 1970. She worked briefly with Leonard Cohen in Nashville and then began performing at festivals and clubs throughout Ontario. She played, at Massey Hall concerts opening for Chris de Burgh and J.J.Cale. 1978 she appeared in the movie “Silent Partner” with Christopher Plummer and featured in Playboy Magazine with him. In early 1980 Nancy was signed to a publishing deal with Chappell Music Canada - the first female signed to the company. Nancy left Canada in 1986 to live and work in California for 18 years. Her songs have been covered by, among others: Melissa Manchester, Ricky Van Shelton, Alannah Myles, Christopher Ward, Quartette, Adrian Zmed, Colleen Peterson, and Veronique Beliveau. She has received writing awards for the multi-million selling CD “Alannah Myles” which featured her song “Hurry Make Love”. Along with Alannah Myles and Robert Priest she was awarded for the number one song “Song Instead of a Kiss”. Nancy returned to Ontario nine years ago.

The Break-Up Diet With Torrance is a unique, deeply personal and emotionally taut auto-biographical theatrical narrative set to music. Musical theatre has never seen anything quite like The Break-Up Diet, a new work from singer/songwriter Tamara Williamson. Adapted from the soon to be published book and audiobook, The Break-Up Diet tells the story of a year in the life of Tamara Williamson as she undergoes a common but nevertheless definingly torturous episode in her life, the ruthlessly fast disintegration of her outwardly perfect marriage. Punctuated by raw guttural songs written by Tamara at the time of the events portrayed, the music is driving alternative rock performed by Tamara and her band, Mrs. Torrance.
About Tamara:
Tamara Williamson has been a mainstay in the Toronto music scene since the early ’90s. She
released 3 albums with her band Mrs. Torrance on the major label BMG. In 2000, Mrs. Torrance disbanded and Tamara started a solo career. She has released five albums in Canada and Europe on OCEAN Music and Aporia and collaborated with such bands as King Cobb Steelie, Rheostatics, Do Make Say Think and MicroBunny. Tamara also plays Ukulele in an ensemble called CROW. Her music is dramatic, ethereal, sensitive, and sometimes loud, and is known for building live sound walls with her experimentation using both vocal effects and looping. Tamara has been featured on The New Music Show, and been on heavy rotation on MUCH Music. She has played Jason Collettes Basement Review and shared the stage with many of Canada's alt rock royalty at festivals such as Hillside, The Regina Folk Festival, NXNE, and CMW. 
About Mrs.Torrance:
Mrs. Torrance was an established presence on the independent Queen West music scene
throughout the 1990s, opening for Oasis and signing to a major label just before Napster exploded the business model of the music industry. Mrs. Torrance has reformed to provide an incredible musical backdrop (both soundscapes and song performances) to the emotionally devastating and yet ultimately cathartic story of The Break-Up Diet.

Jo Passed is the songwriting and creative project of Jo Hirabayashi, a musician based in Toronto and Vancouver. The project released two EPs "Up" and "Out" before signing with Sub Pop and Royal Mountain and releasing the album "Their Prime" in 2018.  Following a maintenance hiatus, Jo returned in 2025 with the digital single "Weekend" and a sophomore album "Away" released Jan 23rd 2026 on Youth Riot Records. The live show for the project features a rotation of exceptional live musicians from all across North America.

 Jennifer Allison is a designer, curator, and educator with over 15 years of international experience in fashion, footwear, and fine art.  She has led design teams for companies such as Pour La Victoire in New York and ALDO Group in Montreal, before founding the Art and Sole Academy—Canada’s first full-time shoemaking school. Today, as Director and Curator of the WKP Kennedy Gallery, she curates exhibitions, mentors emerging artists, and develops inclusive cultural programming. 
Expanding on this dedication to creativity and craft, Jennifer is in the midst of launching her newest venture, SELF MADE—a DIY lifestyle brand that empowers makers to slow down, make time for themselves, and ultimately make their own statement.

Dena Jackson is a Keynote Speaker, Comedian and Yoga and Mindfulness Instructor. She uses a comedic approach in her shows to share how mindfulness practices can alleviate stress and anxiety. This show on presence shares personal stories about navigating life's challenges while offering realistic healing tools that she has used to process difficult emotions.Dena has performed at the Just for Laughs Festival, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, the New York Comedy Festival and she is regularly featured on the CBC and on Sirius XM Radio.She completed her 200-hour teacher training at Kashish Yoga School in Goa, India and her instructor certification at the Mindfulness Society of Canada. Dena hosts a wellness podcast called, “Self Help Me” on Spotify, Apple and the Sonar Network. The Begging Brown Bitch Plays are about lying, sex, and rebirthing oneself: over and over and over again. Zaiba Baig, Peabody Award-winning co-creator of CBC/Max/Sphere Media’s Sort Of, explores deception, desire, and family fractured by displacement in these two unflinching stories of Brown trans women caught between worlds. Kainchee Lagaa and Jhooti are playing as a double bill with a short intermission between the shows.

The performance of Kainchee Lagaa & Jhooti on Saturday April 4 (7:30PM) is intended to create an affinity space and opportunity for South Asian audiences to see the show in community.
“It is my intention for this night to place South Asian audiences at the centre of this storytelling, to offer a space for the culturally-specific complexities and nuances of the plays to be felt together.” - Zaiba Baig
“South Asian” is used strategically and expansively: there is no way to adequately represent all the complexities of having identities connected to “South Asia,” which can include diasporic, Nepali, NRI, Tamil, Indo-Caribbean, Oriya-speaking, brown, Tibetan, Fijian, Maldivian, mixed-race, Pakistani, and more. We intentionally disrupt the exclusion of Black “south asian” folks, Dalit folks and others in this invitation and welcome communities who may see themselves reflected in this show's content as it relates to their cultural context.This definition is inspired and modelled from anu radha verma’s language from brOWN//out 
 
Content WarningKainchee Lagaa and Jhooti are recommended for audiences over the age of sixteen. Both plays contain sexual themes and simulated sex acts, intense descriptions of violence, and coarse language. 
 
About House of Beida House of Beida was created by Zaiba Baig in 2020 to support trans-led artistic projects and mentorship initiatives for trans creatives. Through House of Beida, Baig works on projects for screen and stage that champion nuance and complexity in trans narratives, as well as advocating to prioritize the needs of trans people of colour in artistic environments.
