"Conducting Against the Room” is led by an international research partnership between McMaster University, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW, Switzerland), and the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics (Germany), together with Danish conductor Prof. Morten Schuldt-Jensen who has brought together a local "pop-up choir" of singers from the GTHA.
The project explores how singers and conductors adapt to different room acoustics and how this may shape vocal effort, ensemble sound, and the audience experience. 
 
The Concert
A 15-minute "Science Snapshot" from LIVELab's Dr. Lauren Fink will open the concert event, explaining the virtual acoustics system of the LIVELab and the mobile physiological sensors LIVELab has to measure singer and audience reactions. Audiences will be invited (but absolutely not required!) to participate in our live research study. This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance from the McMaster Research Ethics Board MREB#7202
An approximately 45-minute choral concert program will follow the Science Snapshot, consisting of music from composers Gustav Holst, Anton Bruckner, Maurice Duruflé, as well as renowned Scandinavian composers. 
 
There are two chances to see the concert:
Sunday, April 19th and Monday, April 20th, 2026
On both days, doors open at 7pm and the concert starts at 7:30pm, running approximately 1 hour.

Morten Schuldt-Jensen is an internationally acclaimed Danish conductor and choral specialist. Former Professor of Choral & Orchestral Conducting in Freiburg (until 2024), he was Chief Director of Choral Activities at the Leipzig Gewandhaus (1999–2006) and founder of the internationally renowned Gewandhaus Chamber Choir. As choir master, he has worked with world-class ensembles – including the Berlin Philharmonic – and alongside maestros such as Sir Simon Rattle and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

As they explore stories and artifacts dating all the way back to 1956, these students not only gain an appreciation for the history of the second high school built in Waterloo Region, they also gain an understanding of what it really means to be part of Eastwood’s story. Packed with pop, rock, and musical theatre hits spanning seven decades, Eastwood Live! is a celebration of community, identity, and legacy that seeks to answer the question, “What does it mean to be an Eastwood Lion?”

Class begins promptly at 10am and ends at 4pm.
We provide each student with either a skinned, cleaned, and tanned racoon, opossum, or rat hide depending on the workshop you are taking.
The first half of class is focused on preparing your form, setting the eyes, test fitting and mounting the hide, as well as grooming.
After our first 30-minute break class shifts towards plaque preparation and mounting your project.

Sunset Moths Entomology Class $150USD Unlock the artistry of entomology in our Introductory Bug Pinning Workshop! This hands-on experience is perfect for nature enthusiasts, aspiring entomologists, or anyone interested in the intricate craft of insect preservation. The AM class will begin promptly at 10am and last 2.5 hours.
You will learn the foundational skills of bug pinning, including safe collection methods, proper handling, and the step-by-step process of pinning and mounting your specimen.

Farrin, is a Jamaican-queer coming-of-age film in development, that explores identity, belonging, and migration through the lives of two young women navigating home, heritage, and the future. Rooted in Jamaica and shaped across the diaspora, the film centres Caribbean voices often underrepresented on screen.
The evening will feature sharings from the director about the journey to bringing Farrin into production and the intention behind the story, alongside exclusive previews, and a guided conversation with the audience.
 
In between film findings, enjoy live performances and visual art from local artists.
Afterward, the space will transform into an after-party curated by Toronto’s favourite QTBIPOC party FOMO, with sounds by DJ Shannyn Hill and DJ Young Zee.
  
Like its ambisextrous namesake, Buddies’ in-house bar and performance space Tallulah’s Cabaret does it all. It’s throbbing club nights and community tap dance lessons. Tracy Michailidis is an award-winning performer who has spent her career gracing stages from coast to coast in Canada, from British Columbia to Newfoundland. Abroad, she has performed in Osaka, St. Petersburg, Buenos Aires, Tel Aviv, and Prague. She's tread the boards in leading roles at both the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, and has spent many a summer at the Charlottetown Festival in P.E.I. She has performed both on and off-Broadway, and has originated roles in both musicals and plays.  A multiple Dora-award nominee and winner, Tracy is passionate about new musicals, fostering young artists, and the Toronto Blue Jays.  She will next be seen at the Elgin Theatre this Spring, as part of the Harold Green Jewish Theatre's production of the National Folksbeine Yiddish Theatre's Fiddler on the Roof, performed entirely in Yiddish.

Ken Whiteley has been playing folk, blues, gospel and other roots traditions at the highest level for well over fifty years.  He has received many awards including a Canadian Folk Music Award, 7 Juno nominations, 18 Maple Blues nominations, a Genie Award (for Best Song in a Canadian Film) and Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Mariposa Folk Festival, The Maple Blues Awards and Folk Music Ontario but ultimately for Ken his music is all about making connection. He loves to get people singing with him whether he’s on a concert stage, a folk festival, a church service or a yoga ashram. Joining him are Ben Whiteley on bass, Jesse Whiteley on piano and Hammond organ, Bucky Berger on drums and an all star dream team of vocalists; Ciceal Levy (alto), David Wall (tenor) and Pat Patrick (bass). Don’t be surprised if there are also one or two musical guests!
Ken has made over 32 albums and his most recent one, “Long Time Travelling” was just nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award as Best Traditional Album this year. He has written over 400 songs that have won numerous awards and been covered by more than a dozen artists. Ken is a living link to the traditions of people he has sung and played with including Pete Seeger, The Georgia Sea Island Singers, Tom Paxton, John Hammond Jr., Blind John Davis and many others. He brings this vast experience to each performance as a way to allow all of us to come together through the power of song.

Toronto bassist and composer Alex Lakusta brings a rare fluidity to instrumental music—where jazz, rock, and electronic sensibilities converge in ways that feel both familiar and freshly imagined. Before releasing his 2022 debut Transmit Slow, Lakusta spent years collaborating and touring across a wide range of projects at home and abroad, carving out a place within Canada’s creative circles. His ability to move seamlessly between genres and styles has earned him a reputation for playing that is as unrelenting as it is intuitive—a hallmark that now defines his work as a composer and bandleader.His sophomore album, Island Ghosts, marks a new chapter—one of expansion, reflection, and deepening intent. Written for a six-piece ensemble, the record unfolds as what Lakusta calls “an abstract love story without words”: a collection of pieces that move like memory—warm, fleeting, and vividly alive. The music pulses with heart and clarity, tracing his personal evolution while paying tribute to the people, places, and moments that continue to anchor and inspire his sound.

David Celia & Co is gearing up for its next tour this spring throughout Europe, the UK, and Canada including shows at England’s Small World Festival (Kent) and Great Escape (Brighton). Together, they sing catchy, Canadiana style songs with 3-part Beatlesque/Byrds style harmonies plus open musical improvisations. Brantford drummer, Cliff Rutherford, will be joined by David’s two sons, Marcus and Lucas on acoustic guitar and bass. Opening the night will be the Marcus Celia Band in a singer-songwriter style, featuring Marcus’ band of Humber College All Stars: Sean Maiato, Ben McWebb and Adam Sims, freshly lauded with their Humber College Bachelor of Music degrees! 
David Celia is an innovative singer/songwriter and astonishing guitar player, known for his spontaneously driven live performances. He tours frequently across Canada and Europe (Glastonbury Festival x7) and is described as "One of Toronto's best guitar players” by CBC Radio. David's music has consistently appeared on the CBC, BBC and WNYC in New York.  Even the late Gordon Lightfoot was a fan: “I like the sentiment in your lyrics”. David's reputation as a guitarist has led him to play with many local Canadian artists in their bands, including legendary Alt-Country/folk singers Ian & Sylvia Tyson and acts as diverse as Icelandic alt/pop star Emiliana Torrini. He's supported shows for Elvis Costello, Badly Drawn Boy, Fairport Convention, Ron Sexsmith, Martha Wainwright, Kiefer Sutherland + more. He’s also had the pleasure of meeting and playing music with the late great Pete Seeger. Some recent career highlights include performing at the Glastonbury Festival and Trafalgar Square, London for Canada Day (2025).
The Marcus Celia Band is a Toronto based 4-piece alternative indie rock band, playing a wide variety of original music spanning from soft and playful plucky tunes to heavy rock songs. They are inspired by acts like Radiohead, Elliot Smith, The Beatles, Midlake and more.  Thursday April 30.

Tom Rush
Tom Rush is a gifted musician and performer, whose shows offer a musical celebration…a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become. His distinctive guitar style, wry humour and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues. Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences.” Country music star Garth Brooks has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences. Rush has long championed emerging artists. His early recordings introduced the world to the work of Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor, and in more recent years his Club 47® concerts have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith and Shawn Colvin to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations.
Tom Rush began his musical career in the early ’60s playing the Boston-area clubs.Rush displayed then, as he does today, an uncanny knack for finding wonderful songs, and writing his own – many of which have become classics re-interpreted by new generations. (It is a testimony to the universality of his appeal that his songs have been folk hits, country hits, heavy metal and rap hits.) Signed by Elektra in 1965, Rush made three albums for them, culminating in The Circle Game, which, according to Rolling Stone, ushered in the singer/songwriter era. In the early ’70s, folk turned to folk-rock, and Rush, ever adaptable, saw more room to stretch out.. Rush returned with a splash in 1981, selling out Boston’s prestigious Symphony Hall in advance. Time off had not only rekindled Rush’s love of music, but it had also re-ignited music audiences’ love of Rush.
In 2012, he began a revival of his Club 47® shows at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Tom Rush: 50 Years of Music, featured old friends David Bromberg, Jonathan Edwards and Buskin & Batteau, and new friends like Dom Flemons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Today, join this acclaimed musician Friday April 24 at Hugh’s Room Live.

The Break-Up Diet With Torrance is a unique, deeply personal and emotionally taut auto-biographical theatrical narrative set to music. Musical theatre has never seen anything quite like The Break-Up Diet, a new work from singer/songwriter Tamara Williamson. Adapted from the soon to be published book and audiobook, The Break-Up Diet tells the story of a year in the life of Tamara Williamson as she undergoes a common but nevertheless definingly torturous episode in her life, the ruthlessly fast disintegration of her outwardly perfect marriage. Punctuated by raw guttural songs written by Tamara at the time of the events portrayed, the music is driving alternative rock performed by Tamara and her band, Mrs. Torrance.
About Tamara:
Tamara Williamson has been a mainstay in the Toronto music scene since the early ’90s. She
released 3 albums with her band Mrs. Torrance on the major label BMG. In 2000, Mrs. Torrance disbanded and Tamara started a solo career. She has released five albums in Canada and Europe on OCEAN Music and Aporia and collaborated with such bands as King Cobb Steelie, Rheostatics, Do Make Say Think and MicroBunny. Tamara also plays Ukulele in an ensemble called CROW. Her music is dramatic, ethereal, sensitive, and sometimes loud, and is known for building live sound walls with her experimentation using both vocal effects and looping. Tamara has been featured on The New Music Show, and been on heavy rotation on MUCH Music. She has played Jason Collettes Basement Review and shared the stage with many of Canada's alt rock royalty at festivals such as Hillside, The Regina Folk Festival, NXNE, and CMW. 
About Mrs.Torrance:
Mrs. Torrance was an established presence on the independent Queen West music scene
throughout the 1990s, opening for Oasis and signing to a major label just before Napster exploded the business model of the music industry. Mrs. Torrance has reformed to provide an incredible musical backdrop (both soundscapes and song performances) to the emotionally devastating and yet ultimately cathartic story of The Break-Up Diet.

In 2017 she delivered a breakout performance at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal by becoming the first female to win the prestigious Homegrown Comics Competition as Canada’s top comedian. Elaine Gold is a comedian and storyteller. She was a featured storyteller on Tinder Tales for 5 years, performing on storytelling stages all over Toronto and Ontario. Elaine loves to honestly tell her hilarious life stories. She's old AF and loves playing the old lady card. Her last appearance at a Hutch show she had the audience howling with laughter. 
Tom Henry is a comedian, actor and writer from Toronto. His acclaimed Just for Laughs produced Stand Up Special, ‘66 Jokes’, can be found on Crave TV. He's appeared at festivals such as Just For Laughs, San Francisco Sketchfest and Bridgetown Comedy Festival, and has opened for comics such as Nate Bargatze, Nikki Glaser and Tim Meadows. He was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Stand-Up Newcomer in 2012. His album, ‘Tom Henry Kills’ reached number one on the iTunes comedy charts.  
Chris Robinson is one of the premier comics in Canada. In 2016 he was the runner-up at the prestigious homegrown competition at Just For Laughs in Montreal. Later that year he was crowned Sirius XM's Top Comic. A win that granted him $25,000--and a return to Just For Laughs Montreal, an appearance at JFL Northwest in Vancouver and his solo show at JFL42 in 2017. Chris is a working actor on Netflix, Amazon, CMT, and various TV and internet commercials. Now Magazine has described him as having "charisma and raw talent to burn." Paul Hutcheson is a queer comedic performer, writer and producer. His six solo shows have been produced numerous comedic solo shows which have toured Canada and the United States, playing to sold-out audiences, glowing reviews and awards. He produces monthly comedy events Hutch & Friends and Hutch’s Storytime in Toronto. He can be seen on various comedy and storytelling stages in Toronto. Hailing from Newfoundland, singer/songwriter Dana Reid puts honesty and authenticity above all else. With a professional history spanning over 15 years, Dana has been entertaining audiences far and wide with her thoughtful lyricism and heartfelt vocals. Reminiscent of country legends of old and drawing influence from legends Lucinda Williams, Cat Stevens, and modern heroes Jason Isbell and Joel Plaskett, Dana is soulful and methodical in her music, often making people turn their heads to listen deeper.On the strength of Dana’s debut 2012 release, “A Good Kind of Rain,” she was nominated for MusicNL’s Female Artist of the Year and was afforded opportunities to perform in Ontario, England, and all across the island of Newfoundland.In 2025, Dana returned with her sophomore full-length release, “Beauty in the Darkness.” The album, produced by Billboard-charting producer Peter Daniel Newman, chronicles a divorce all the way from the initial split, to the sense of directionlessness felt in the aftermath, to the eventual acceptance of the situation and the rediscovery of the self. Working with plush faux furs, memory foam insoles, and durable rubber outsoles, you’ll cut, assemble, and finish your slippers with both comfort and design in mind. Strap placement will be tailored directly on your feet, ensuring a fit that feels as good as it looks. With two upper design options and a curated selection of colours and prints, you’ll create a pair that reflects your unique style!
No prior experience is required — all tools and materials are provided. 
Bring your creativity and curiosity, and you’ll leave with:

 About the Instructor:
 Jennifer Allison is a designer, curator, and educator with over 15 years of international experience in fashion, footwear, and fine art.  She has led design teams for companies such as Pour La Victoire in New York and ALDO Group in Montreal, before founding the Art and Sole Academy—Canada’s first full-time shoemaking school. Today, as Director and Curator of the WKP Kennedy Gallery, she curates exhibitions, mentors emerging artists, and develops inclusive cultural programming. 
Expanding on this dedication to creativity and craft, Jennifer is in the midst of launching her newest venture, SELF MADE—a DIY lifestyle brand that empowers makers to slow down, make time for themselves, and ultimately make their own statement.

The return of this beloved fixture of our home on Dundas has been full of learning and listening to new artists. For this special anniversary we've chosen our sweet Jane Harbury who hosted Discoveries at Hugh's Room on Dundas for over a decade. If you know Jane, you know she knows good music better than anyone. She is a respected music publicist with a great ear and an incomparable personality. We are proud to have her host this concert and know you will love the artists she brings to our stage. 
EWEN FARNCOMBE: Ewen is actually a “Rediscovery”, He was on a Discoveries show in May, 2011. This Toronto-based multiple Juno-nominated pianist / composer has earned the reputation as one of Canada’s best jazz pianists. During his years at Humber College he received several prestigious awards, including the Hnatyshyn Foundation Oscar Peterson award and the Downbeat Jazz Instrumental Soloist award in the Undergraduate category. While Ewen is quite at home playing with different artists and bands, he finds great joy in celebrating the rich history of the piano through the medium of solo piano, which he does to a high degree. He demonstrates a virtuosic ease of playing that coaxes the piano into beautiful song.
NOAH KOSTA: Noah Kosta is a 22-year-old jazz/pop artist captivating audiences across Canada with his distinctive voice and modern take on classic crooner music. Fresh off an appearance on Canada’s Got Talent, Noah continues to establish himself as one of the country’s most promising emerging performers. Inspired by the music of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Noah began performing at a young age and has appeared at major venues including Koerner Hall, Casino Rama, Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, Mel Lastman Square, and the International Beaches Jazz Festival. A Grand Prize winner of the LIVECITY™ Music Awards and the Long &amp; McQuade Singing Contest with John Santos, Noah has also worked with renowned artists and coaches including Elaine Overholt, Stanislas Vitort,Alma Deutscher, Bill King, and Charles T. Cozens. In 2026, Noah continues to light up stages across Canada with a blend of timeless jazz standards and modern jazz-pop.
JP LEBLANC: Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, JP grew up immersed in both English and French. He discovered the blues at 11 years old and recorded his first album by 17. The album earned an East Coast Music Award nomination. In 2024 he represented Atlantic Canada at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, cementing his place on the international stage. His most recent album, 2025’s “All In My Blood”, JP delivers his most ambitious work to date - an album rooted in Acadian pride, enriched by blues heritage, enriched by blues heritage and alive with heartfelt storytelling. The album written in Canada with lyricist Larry LeBlanc was recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer Colin Linden. JP says: “Working with Colin and these incredible musicians felt like the culmination of everything I’ve worked for”
NANCY SIMMONDS: Nancy, born in London, ON, Nancy began her singer/songwriter career when she move to Toronto in 1970. She worked briefly with Leonard Cohen in Nashville and then began performing at festivals and clubs throughout Ontario. She played, at Massey Hall concerts opening for Chris de Burgh and J.J.Cale. 1978 she appeared in the movie “Silent Partner” with Christopher Plummer and featured in Playboy Magazine with him. In early 1980 Nancy was signed to a publishing deal with Chappell Music Canada - the first female signed to the company. Nancy left Canada in 1986 to live and work in California for 18 years. Her songs have been covered by, among others: Melissa Manchester, Ricky Van Shelton, Alannah Myles, Christopher Ward, Quartette, Adrian Zmed, Colleen Peterson, and Veronique Beliveau. She has received writing awards for the multi-million selling CD “Alannah Myles” which featured her song “Hurry Make Love”. Along with Alannah Myles and Robert Priest she was awarded for the number one song “Song Instead of a Kiss”. Nancy returned to Ontario nine years ago.

Jo Passed is the songwriting and creative project of Jo Hirabayashi, a musician based in Toronto and Vancouver. The project released two EPs "Up" and "Out" before signing with Sub Pop and Royal Mountain and releasing the album "Their Prime" in 2018.  Following a maintenance hiatus, Jo returned in 2025 with the digital single "Weekend" and a sophomore album "Away" released Jan 23rd 2026 on Youth Riot Records. The live show for the project features a rotation of exceptional live musicians from all across North America.
