Featuring a blend of acoustic instruments, rural soundscapes, and wistful vocals, Great Lake Swimmers are a critically acclaimed indie-folk group led by songwriter/vocalist Tony Dekker. Based in Toronto, Ontario, the group emerged in the early 2000s with a succession of heavily atmospheric albums recorded in old silos and rural country churches. The music developed in that pastoral warmth, performed and recorded in acoustically unique and historical locales with a revolving cast of personnel. They are renowned for their homespun folk and lush, intimate Americana in their live set.
Great Lake Swimmers celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2023 with “Uncertain Country,” an album where doubts are followed by discovery, demos end up as finished tracks, and themes of new beginnings, rear-view reflections, and ruminations on the fluidity of time form the basis of the eleven new songs.
It follows a prolonged period of collective anxiety. Recorded in different locales—and with a variety of musicians—a theme of questioning runs throughout. Even before the world turned upside down, Dekker felt mired in uncertainty: from the climate crisis to the ever-changing political landscape. The “uncertain country” chosen as the album’s theme is not a specific place. Rather, it’s a territory we, as humans, inhabit in the 21st century — a world that, more often than not, is confusing, unfamiliar and unsettling.
“Moonlight, Stay Above” epitomizes what Great Lake Swimmers represents. A 10-voice strong women’s choir (Niagara's Minuscule) lifts the lonely-sounding and wistful song up. As with that addition, the band on each album is fluid and always evolving.
Great Lake Swimmers were shortlisted for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize and nominated twice for Canada’s Juno Awards, with the CBC calling them “a national treasure.”

The Fugitives are an acoustic folk-roots group headed by songwriters Adrian Glynn and Brendan McLeod. They’re joined by banjo player Chris Suen (Viper Central) and violinist Carly Frey (The Coal Porters). Over their first five albums, they’ve amassed a JUNO nomination, 6 CFMA nominations, and toured extensively through Canada, Europe, and the UK.
Performance highlights include major Canadian folk festivals, a Glastonbury performance, and a tour supporting  Buffy Sainte-Marie. In 2020, the band created RIDGE, a WW1-centered theatre show. Ridge has been performed at theatres across Canada and was named a Globe & Mail Top Arts Pick of the Year.
The band has earned a reputation for unforgettable live shows, brimming with complex harmonies, infectious storytelling, and top-notch musicianship.

Matthew Barber is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter who has been touring and making records for over two decades. He has released 11 albums, garnered two Juno nominations, several Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, performed extensively across four continents and racked up plenty of radio play and millions of streams. Inspired by 60’s rock and roll, folk and soul, 70’s singer-songwriters, old-time country and blues and 90’s indie rock, Matthew has carved out his own sound in the 21st century that has matured over the years. These days Matthew is equally at home performing with his band or solo when he’s not in the studio producing music for up and coming artists. His most recent release is an EP entitled No Singing or Dancing.

Aleksi grew up on stage. At five years old, he began performing alongside his mother, Canadian folk icon, Connie Kaldor. At nineteen, Aleksi moved to Paris to study under Jazz-violin legend Didier Lockwood. At twenty-one, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin, the jazz violin and the jazz voice performance programs at McGill University. And, by twenty-five, with only a six-song EP, Aleksi graced the lineups of some of the most competitive folk festivals across Canada for three consecutive years - including the Regina, Canmore, and Bear Creek Folk Festivals.
Most recently, Aleksi received both a Canada Council Grant and a FACTOR Grant to fully fund the recording and production of his highly-anticipated 10-song debut album For the Giving, launching fall 2023. Still based out of his hometown of Montreal, Aleksi floors audiences by singing while bowing his violin and seamlessly navigating songs in English and in French. His original music blends folk songwriting with an edgy, multi-layered sound resulting from his unique combination of voice, violin, and looping-effect pedals.

The Tartan Ball has become a traditional favourite with 200+ attendees dressed in their kilts and Scottish finery, ready to enjoy a fine meal and the best of Scottish entertainment.
The evening begins with a Social Hour at 6:00 pm, with dinner at 7:00 pm followed by entertainment with the Glengarry Pipe Band and the MacCulloch Dancers. The evening dance commences around 9:15 pm.

Michael and Jody have been making frequent trips to Louisiana since 1997 and the music from Southwest Louisiana and its cultural context continues to fascinate them.
They play a mixture of original and cover tunes leaning towards the earlier country that still sounded like country. Some of their favourites are Hank Williams, George Jones, Roger Miller and Webb Pierce.

In many ways, the ensuing awards and accolades speak for themselves: ten East Coast Music Awards, two Canadian Folk Music Awards, four Music Nova Scotia Awards, and a Juno Award nomination for his tribute album to the late John Allan Cameron. As one reviewer aptly noted, “Gunning’s ability to blend humor with poignancy makes his performances unforgettable.” This blend is evident in his live shows, where his engaging banter and self-effacing humor create a warm, intimate atmosphere. Leeroy Stagger (Now in his early 40’s) is a beloved, award-winning Canadian Singer-Songwriter, Producer and Master Storyteller. Stylistically his music moves between Folk, Roots and Rocknroll. He is Inspired as much from John Prine or Nick Drake as he is Tom Petty or Joe Strummer. For the past twenty years, he has been touring North America and Europe, making records and gaining a strong but more importantly, dedicated following. His music is written from a lens of a spiritual path through addiction and recovery; he cuts a trail through the human condition in only a way that a veteran observational traveller and artist can.
Leeroy was signed to the infamous Canadian Label True North Records (Bruce Cockburn, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings) as well as industry mogul Danny Goldberg’s (Nirvana, Steve Earle, The Cranberries) Gold Lake Records.
He has supported and toured with and with Steve Earle, Josh Ritter, Buffy Sainte Marie, Frazey Ford, The Pixies, Modest Mouse, The Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell and more. He is just as at home in a cafe with an audience of 50 as he is on a festival stage with and audience of 10,000.
These days Leeroy is raising kids and producing records in his studio, Neighbourhood Recorders. He is also the host of the weekly Dirty Windshields Radio hour on world famous CKUA radio.

Yorkland Publishing today announced the upcoming publication of Jason Dunkerley’s Visions of Hope: Running Towards My Own Truth, an autobiography of an iconic blind Canadian middle-distance runner who won five Paralympic medals and numerous other laurels during his storied career. Instructor Bio
Renée-Claude has been training and performing on aerial silks and aerial hoop since 2016. She completed her aerial teaching training at the Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Montreal. She is also a skilled hula hooper, teaching and performing with LED and fire in Ottawa for over 8 years. Renée-Claude is motivated by all the creative challenges aerial arts present, from collaboratively creating new acts, characters and shows, to figuring out how to master the physics at play in dynamic movements. She is an artistic collaborator and member of the Cirquonscient performance collective.

Instructor Bio
Andrii Balykhin has dedicated his life to acrobatics, achieving the rank of Master of Sports. He graduated from the Kyiv Circus Academy with a Master’s degree in aerial gymnastics and has since toured internationally, earning numerous accolades, including gold at the 2018 Festival "Les feux de la Rampe" in France. Andrii has performed worldwide, including in China, Europe, and Germany, and has coached at his own school, "Young Vision Team," in Kyiv. Currently based in Canada, he continues to develop his acrobatic skills and share his expertise with others passionate about body control.

Architects of Air Arborialis luminarium is an encounter with the phenomenon of light. An encounter that is beautiful in its simplicity, which can nevertheless be profound in its effect. Once inside, visitors are immersed into a world of shifting subtle and saturated hues where they may wander, sit down, and lose themselves in sensory bliss - awakening the senses.
Arborialis has the natural world for inspiration and is designed to echo aspects of being lost in a forest – there are radiant canopies of leaves that stretch overhead, there are vibrant tree trunks rising from the ground beneath.
The visual world of Arborialis is enhanced by the natural and spiritual sounds of the Song of Danu created by Irish composer Dr Michael Morris.

L’attachante pièce Polar Bear and Penguin s’adresse aux plus jeunes. Elle a été écrite par John Currivan et Paul Curley, qui en sont les comédiens.
Cette histoire raconte la rencontre improbable entre un ours blanc et un pingouin. Malgré leur caractère aux antipodes, les deux animaux apprennent à se connaître et à survivre dans un monde qui fond littéralement sous leurs pieds, leurs pattes et leurs nageoires.

As put by the Wall Street Journal, “[Night Reign’s] beauty is self-evident, and it stands on its own” which helps explain its inclusion across so many Best of 2024 album lists.Night Reign’s predecessor, Vulture Prince, ushered Aftab into the cultural zeitgeist, including a place on President Barack Obama’s Summer 2021 playlist. Recognition for the record propelled her to a Best New Artist Grammy nomination in 2022 and a win for the song “Mohabbat.” The following year she collaborated with Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily on a “masterclass in space,” the improvisational Love in Exile (Verve 2023), also Grammy nominated and winner of a 2023 Edison Jazz award.Aftab spent her adolescent years in Lahore, Pakistan, the birthplace of her music-loving parents. Her viral cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at age 18 aided in her passage to study jazz at Berklee College of Music in Boston, while Brooklyn, New York would be her next and most fertile workshop for creation of her genre-defying music.Over the last few years, she has delivered “rapturous performances” at major venues and international festivals including Primavera, Glastonbury, Coachella, Le Guess Who? (which she curated), and both Newport and Montreal Jazz. She has appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk, Later with Jools Holland, Brodie and Mahogany sessions. Aftab has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Financial Times, The Quietus, and Time, to name a few. She is a 2023 United States Artists Fellow and recipient of the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Music.

To a generation of contemporary jazz guitar aficionados, Mike Stern is regarded as one of the true guitar greats of his generation. A player of remarkable facility whose searing lines are informed mainly by bebop and the blues while also carrying a rock-tinged intensity, Stern made his mark with Miles Davis in the early ‘80s before launching his solo career in 1985. Since then he has released 18 recordings as a leader, six of which were nominated for GRAMMY® Awards. In support of his latest album, Echoes and Other Songs (Artistry/Mack Avenue), Mike hits the stage with Dennis Chambers (drums), Bob Franceschini (sax), Noam Tanzer (bass), and Leni Stern (guitar, ngoni)

A moving and hilarious story about an ordinary day in a bench’s lifeIt’s so mundane, the bench, and yet so magical! It stands everywhere in cities, parks and gardens, like an open invitation. Sometimes the bench’s visitors merely brush each other, at other times it evolves.
An elderly lady does everything she can to keep life at bay – from her bench. But the hectic surroundings take her by surprise. If only they could let her be old and grouchy alone! But the boy is skateboarding, the dog is sniffing and scuttling around, the birds are chirping, and a friendly, elderly gentleman wants to read his newspaper. All of this is a nuisance!

Les rues et les parcs de toutes les villes ont des bancs qui invitent les passants à s’y asseoir et à partager leurs histoires.
Une femme s’assoit sur un banc pour y trouver paix et quiétude, mais rencontre des passants qui ont d’autres plans. Avec des marionnettes superbement détaillées, la pièce loue la simplicité de la vie quotidienne.
Cette histoire touchante et drôle raconte une journée ordinaire dans la vie d’un banc. Un banc, c’est si banal, et pourtant c’est très magique! On en voit partout dans les villes, les parcs et les jardins. Ce sont de véritables invitations. Parfois, les visiteurs d’un banc ne font que se frôler, parfois leur rencontre évolue.
Une femme âgée fait tout ce qu’elle peut pour éloigner la vie, du moins de son banc. Mais son environnement mouvementé la prend par surprise. Si seulement les autres pouvaient la laisser être vieille et grognonne seule! Un garçon passe sur une planche à roulettes, un chien renifle en trottant à toute vitesse, les oiseaux gazouillent et un amical vieil homme veut lire son journal. Tout cela lui tombe sur les nerfs!

The Bench

Nova Scotia raised, Ottawa based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Malia Rogers has a clear musical mission: be the first person in the room to drop her shield, and in doing so, move others to lower their own.
Her introspective, conversational folk offerings carefully balance melancholy and hope, touching audiences with precise lyricism, warm alto vocals, and gentle wit. 
Joined by vocalist/keyboardist Emma Bayash and producer/guitarist Neil Whitford, Malia will perform her debut EP Chameleon on the eve of its release alongside other treasured originals both old and new. Audiences will enjoy stirring celtic and bluegrass-inspired melodies balancing melancholy & hope, relatable stories about love, grief, and self-discovery, and intricate harmonies supported by fingerstyle guitar and clawhammer banjo.
Alongside her solo practice, Malia’s multi-instrumentalism has made her a fixture in the award-winning folk trio Jessica Pearson & the East Wind, as well as on theatre stages as an actor-musician. Having most recently visited the Red Bird stage as a bandmate to Ian Sherwood, Malia is thrilled to return with her own offerings.
Through song and story, Malia invites you into the corners of her heart the way she would invite you into her family home on the East Coast: put down the heavy bags, stay as long as you need, and take something with you when you go.
