"In the marshland, famine was more feared than war. Some of the older people still remembered the damage done by the cold that had swept over the area many years before. They told how the winter that year had been unusually warm, with continuous spells of springlike weather, and how the mountain to the north-west had been wrapped in a constant haze and only faintly visible. But when the spring ended and the rainy season set in, the rains were incessant, and even after summer arrived, the mornings and nights were so chilly that it was impossible to remove one's clothing. The sprouts in the fields showed no signs of maturing, and many of them withered away. Food supplies dwindled to nothing. The villagers gathered arrowroot from the mountains and even ate the rice bran, hay and beanstalks that were intended as feed for the horses. When those provisions were exhausted, they killed their precious horses and dogs and even ate tree bark and weeds to stave off starvation. When they had eaten everything they could find, parents and children, husbands and wives went their separate ways, leaving their villages in search of food. Some dropped along the road from starvation, but their relatives could do nothing for them and abandoned them where they lay. Eventually wild dogs and crows devoured the corpses."
