Description

Join GIRAF21 signal film artist Sofiya Iukevych in the creation of a finished, painted Phenakistoscope disk using modern animation methods combined with traditional painting.

The phenakistiscope is regarded as one of the first forms of moving media that paved the way for the future motion picture and film industry. It was the first widespread animation device that created a fluid illusion of motion. Similar to GIFs, it shows a short continuous loop of movement.

This workshop will guide you through the creation of a 1-second, 8 or 12 frame animation digitally using Adobe Photoshop, arranging the frames to fit the phenakistiscope layout, and then printing and painting it for a completed piece of optical illusion art.

From the Instructor - Sofiya Iukevych:

"My personal art is most often inspired by Ukrainian folklore and literature, myth, nature and the fantastical of all kinds. As a young filmmaker, most of all I like telling gently surreal stories with a heavy emphasis on the environment, resulting in slow, moody and mysterious pieces.
For the GIRAF’s 21st Signal Film, I’m stepping away from anything dark or subtle, and making a tribute to one of my favourite artists, Maria Prymachenko. Bold, vibrant, whimsical beasts and botanicals inspired by naive folk art are going to invite the viewers of this round of the festival to come see some incredible animation. With painted phenakistoscopes, the main technique of this Signal Film will go back to the very roots of animation and cinema."
