Whitney James: Love Notes

For the past decade, vocalist Whitney James has delighted audiences with her annual Valentine’s Day performances. This year, with a little football game taking place on February 14, she brings the romance a week early with a warm blend of torch songs, ballads, and American Songbook favorites.

 

About the Artists

After establishing herself in Seattle, Whitney James moved to Tampa Bay in 2008 and quickly became a central voice in the region’s jazz community. Her collaborations with groups such as the Best of the Bay trio La Lucha became part of local music lore, while her wide vocal range and expressive interpretations have continued to captivate audiences.

Since moving to Texas to pursue her master’s degree at the University of North Texas, James has made only rare special appearances in Tampa. For this performance, she is joined by guitarist LaRue Nickelson, whose harmonic rapport with James is a highlight of the ensemble, along with British-born pianist Simon Lasky, bassist Alejandro Arenas, and drummer Mark Griffith.
