Artist Talk: 7:15 PM
SlowPitchSound is a celebrated turntable artist and award winning composer, mentor and explorer of sound and visuals, who experiments with a wide range of disciplines, styles and sounds in what he has dubbed as “sci-fi turntablism”. Inspired by nature, outer space and dystopian sci-fi, his approach to making and presenting music includes turntablism, live sampling, field recordings and live cinema.
SlowPitchSound’s otherworldly environmentally focused adventure Within Touch is a 50 minute audio/visual performance that features a unique style of musical making which mirrors the incredible unfurling of the natural world. Within Touch is a multi-sensory performance, combining music and visual projections to highlight the importance of the world's forests as well as the life forms that inhabit them, bringing awareness of the negative effects of deforestation and climate change. The piece is performed using a turntable, looper, drum machine and video camera. During the performance the audience will have a closeup view of SlowPitchSounds process of storytelling projected on screen. They will witness improvised compositions created in a very unique way.
Embark on a sonic odyssey with SlowPitchSound, the creative alter ego of the musical virtuoso Cheldon Paterson. Hailing from Toronto Canada, SlowPitchSound is not just an artist but a boundary-pushing maestro, a mentor, and an intrepid explorer of the auditory realm. With a career spanning over two decades, he has become a luminary, earning accolades for his avant-garde contributions to the landscape of music.
SlowPitchSound's collaborative spirit has allowed him to transcend genres, working in the realms of electronic music, opera, jazz, classical, experimental theatre, and dance. His artistic voyage knows no borders, as he has dazzled audiences on stages across the globe—from Canada to Australia, USA, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Sweden and Taiwan.
His self-proclaimed "scifi-turntablism" isn't just a genre; it's an interstellar journey. Rooted in a profound connection to the natural world, outer space, and dystopian sci-fi, Cheldon's passion for depth and detail reverberates through his compositions.
Picture his turntable as a spaceship navigating the celestial expanse, samples as stardust manipulated by the sonic sorcerer, and field recordings as whispers from distant galaxies. SlowPitchSound's musical lexicon is a tapestry of unconventional textures, seamlessly woven together to create an auditory universe that transcends the ordinary.
