A Historical Conversation among Scotland, Canada, and Taiwan 蘇格蘭、加拿大、台灣的歷史對談

Travel back in time to the 19th century with Dr. Mimi Sung of Tainan Theological College. Starting from the history of churches, immigration, and transoceanic migration, we will gain a new understanding of the deep, yet rarely discussed, connections between Scotland, Canada, and Taiwan. Following the migration of people throughout time, let’s explore how the three societies have shaped multicultural identity respectively, and how this can guide us toward the future.

本場講座將帶大家回到十九世紀，從教會、移民與跨洋流動的歷史出發，重新理解蘇格蘭、加拿大與台灣之間鮮少被談起的深層連結。透過移動的人串起三地的歷史與發展，同時也探索這三個作為島嶼或具島嶼特性的社會，如何在持續流動中形塑多元文化與身份認同，並且如何能帶領我們走向未來。

About the Artist

Sung grew up in a small fishing village in Kaohsiung. At age eighteen, she travelled to the other side of the island to study at university in Hualien, learning what it meant to live between mountains and ocean, between home and the unknown. After graduation, she moved to Taipei and worked there for several years.

Sung’s interests in life and human minds eventually led her to Bristol in the United Kingdom, where she completed a master’s degree in education counseling and began to listen more deeply to stories—others’ and her own. Returning to Taiwan in 2012, she continued working and then entered Tainan Theological College and Seminary to pursue a Master of Divinity degree. In 2017, this journey took her farther north, to the University of Edinburgh, where she embarked on doctoral studies and, in 2023, received her PhD.

Moving through many cities in Taiwan and beyond, Sung has remained a traveler across literature, art, psychology, theology, Christian faith, and history—always searching for what ultimately gives meaning to a human life.

宋訡瑄從小在高雄小漁村長大，到花蓮念大學。大學畢業後在台北工作數年，到英國布里斯托就讀諮商碩士，返台工作後，進入台南神學院就讀道學碩士，2017年前往愛丁堡大學就讀博士班，2023年取得博士返回台南神學院教書。人生在台灣島嶼上許多不同城市求學、工作，是一個在文學、藝術、心理學、神學、基督信仰、歷史諸多領域中不斷追尋人生終極意義的人。
