Celebrating the women lyricists & librettists of the Golden Era in jazz

In celebration of International Women’s Day, acclaimed vocalist Genevieve “Gigi” Marentette presents Women’s Lib. Celebrating the words of trailblazing lyricists and librettists: women whose writing shaped Broadway, Hollywood, jazz, blues, and the Great American Songbook. Featuring works by Lil Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Betty Comden, Dorothy Fields, Harriette Hamilton, Irene Higginbotham, Peggy Lee, Lena Ledoux, Ruth Lowe, Ann Ronell, and Kay Swift, among others. 

Genevieve “Gigi” Marentette is known for performances that bring lyric, history, and lived experience into close focus. Her debut LP, Songs of ’69, launched at Koerner Hall, explores the music and cultural movements of a pivotal year through deeply personal reinterpretation.

For this special occasion Gigi is joined by legendary Buffalo-based pianist George Caldwell, an acclaimed performer, musical director, and jazz historian who teaches jazz history in Buffalo. His career spans Broadway productions, major international tours, and years performing with the iconic jazz orchestras of the Count Basie Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Marentette has collaborated with artists including David Clayton-Thomas, Laila Biali, and Don Francks and recently contributed background vocals to Laila Biali’s Grammy-nominated album.
