SDT is a hard hitting groove metal band that can play the heavy stuff and quickly tone it down to southern rock.
Southern Death Threat was formed in 2005 by guitarist\ songwriter and former professional Lacrosse player Brennan Eyles. After playing in dead end bands for a couple of years, Eyles decided to branch out on his own. The band name “Southern Death Threat” came to Eyles after watching CNN. “I was watching the news and the US was at war in Iraq. I was thinking if terrorists ever attacked Nuclear facilities around Seattle, it most likely would affect us in Vancouver.” says Eyles “ Southern Death Threat means the USA especially with us being from Northern Canada “ .This all came up on the way to a New York Yankees baseball game in Seattle Washington May of 2005.
Finding the right mix of musicians to collaborate with proved to be a challenge until the summer of 2006 when Brennan Eyles asked singer Ken Goode(Stand Down) to join and write some bone crushing songs together. The 1st edition of SDT included drummer Bob Wagner (City of Fire, Shocore, Econoline Crush) and bassist Sal Erickson ( Shocore) and Jason Dickie(Deadwax Collective). The first song created was a song about the late Dimebag Darrell called “Beyond Forever”. Some other groove laced tracks included “Frontlines” and the prison influenced “Hard Time in Texas”. These songs would later appear of Southern Death Threat’s self titled debut album in 2007. Scheduling conflicts required Eyles to bring in one of Vancouver’s best hard rock\metal drummers Scott McCargar (Bif Naked, Static In Stereo, SYL). Both Eyles and McCargar , who both loved Pantera, began to make the songs heavier with groove intense parts and plenty of signature time changes. In the Summer of 2007 the band hit Earart Studios with famed Indie Producer Tim Neuhaus. Tim’s was able to capture the powerful live sound of the band. Assistant engineer Clayton Creed helped with the sessions mixing Scotty’s massive beats.
Southern Death Threat's self titled release (2007) quickly gained the attention of rock dj Todd Hancock from 99.3 CFOX in Vancouver. Lead off track "Screwface” was played on the 6’oclock Rock Report and was eventually added as the background music to his Todd and Karen’s traffic updates. SDT was invited to play on the cfox program "The Rock Report" multiple times playing the acoustic song "Rusty" and the previously unreleased song "Addiction". Some other killer songs from the album include the raunchy "Wanted Sevenfold" and the whiskey drinking "Hit the floor".
This started to give the band some serious momentum. In the fall of 2007, Insight Film contacted the band to ask if SDT was available to be in the Steven Seagal movie "Kill Switch". It didn't take the band long to agree to participate in the movie. The band was requested to the set and was introduced to lead actor Steven Seagal." We were getting our gear setup for our part in the movie when Seagal walked through the crowd and onstage to meet us" says Eyles. The scene in Kill Switch: SDT is playing a bar in Memphis when Seagal comes to look for a Serial Killer. SDT has the track "Rusty" featured in the movie. Getting to work with the film crew and some of the actors brought a new friendship with actor-country star Mark Collie (The Punisher, Fire Down Below, Kill Switch). SDT spent some time jamming with Mark Collie in his trailer during a break in the filming (See youtube Mark Collie jammin with Southern Death Threat).
