Think of Me... 

Although she is widely known for her musical theatre career, most notably creating the role of Cosette in Les Misérables, Rebecca Caine's career has been multi-faceted and filled with opera, operetta, theatre, radio, and more. Joining her is lifelong collaborator and friend Robert Kortgaard, the Artistic Director of Under the Spire Music Festival. This will see Mr. Kortgaard's first year performing in the Festival since 2019, and we couldn't be happier to feature him in a concert as special as this one. 

Ms. Caine and Mr. Kortgaard will be joined onstage by two emerging Island opera singers:
Parker Clements, baritone, and Taylor Donald, soprano.

Rebecca Caine

Born in Toronto, Rebecca Caine’s career has been divided between opera and musical theatre. She made her West End debut as Laurey in Oklahoma!, sang Eliza in My Fair Lady on national tour, and after making her debut at Glyndebourne in L’incoronazione di Poppea, created the role of Cosette in Les Misérables for the RSC. Since then her many theatre credits include Christine in Phantom of the Opera in London and Toronto; Salad Days (Riverside Studios); The Sound of Music (national tour); The Mikado and Harold and Maude (Charing Cross Theatre); Flowers for Mrs Harris (Sheffield Theatres); Preludes (Southwark Playhouse). She regularly appears in cabaret and concerts internationally, and broadcasts on BBC Radios 2 and 3.

Opera includes leading roles in Lulu, Cunning Little Vixen, Seven Deadly Sins, The Pearlfishers, Figaro’s Wedding, Cosi Fan Tutte, Magic Flute, Carmen, The Barber of Seville, Il Re Pastore, Rigoletto, Fidelio, Julietta for English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera, Opera North, Glimmerglass, Canadian Opera Company, Nice, Antwerp, National Theatre of Prague, Opera Northern Ireland, Atlanta, Ottawa, Spoleto, Ravenna, Chicago Opera Theatre. Most recently- Abomination A DUP Opera for The Belfast Ensemble.

 Robert Kortgaard

 

Pianist Robert Kortgaard was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He completed his Bachelor and Master’s degrees at the Juilliard School in New York City. As a recipient of arts awards from the Canada Council, he furthered his musical studies in Italy and England. Mr. Kortgaard has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has given recitals throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in England, Finland, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia, the Czech Republic, China and Japan.

Mr. Kortgaard is Artistic Director of Under the Spire Music Festival and the Leith Summer Music Festival in Ontario. Mr. Kortgaard has performed with sopranos Isabel Bayrakdarian, Sumi Jo, Jane Archibald, Adrianne Pieczonka and Erin Wall, mezzo soprano Susan Platts, violinist Joshua Bell, and with prima ballerina Veronica Tennant on a production entitled “Invitation to the Dance”. He has recorded French and German Cabaret programmes with mezzo-soprano Jean Stilwell for CBC Records.

 

Hailing from O’Leary, baritone Parker Clements is thrilled to be coming home to PEI to perform at St. Mary’s this summer. Parker is a recent graduate of the University of Toronto’s Diploma in Operatic Performance program where he studied with Wendy Nielsen. He also had the opportunity to learn the joys of Zoom rehearsal and lockdown performing. He received his Master’s in Vocal Literature and Performance from Western University (London. On.) and is a proud alumnus of the UPEI Bachelor of Music. Parker’s operatic role credits include: Des Grieux (Massenet’s Le portrait de Manon), Silvio (I pagliacci), Edmund (Jonathon Dove’s Mansfield Park based on the novel by Jane Austen), The Lecturer Argento’s A Waterbird Talk, a solo opera for baritone), Escamillo (Carmen), Don Giovanni, Figaro & Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), and Marco (Gianni Schicchi). Parker is currently living in Toronto and is a member of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir. He is also a butcher shop supervisor, gin connoisseur, and cribbage enthusiast.

Taylor Donald, lyric soprano, holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Prince Edward Island, and is currently completing her Master of Music in Opera at the University of Toronto. Taylor has been performing both piano and voice from a young age, with most of her recent work occurring in Toronto, Ontario. She has performed in several choirs, including Luminos Ensemble and the UPEI Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, with featured solos in works including J.S Bach’s Magnificat, Mozart’s Requiem, and Handel’s Messiah. For the past 10 years, she has been a frequent provincial finalist in the PEI Kiwanis Music Festival for both voice and piano, winning the provincial vocal award (Glenn and Maryanne Palmer Award) on two occasions. She also placed first in the Dr. Frances Gray Performance Competition in 2019. In March of 2020, Taylor made her operatic debut as Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Bien qu'elle soit largement connue pour sa carrière dans le domaine de la comédie musicale, notamment pour avoir créé le rôle de Cosette dans Les Misérables, la carrière de Rebecca Caine est multiple et remplie d'opéra, d'opérette, de théâtre, de radio, etc. Elle est accompagnée de son ami et collaborateur de longue date, Robert Kortgaard, directeur artistique du Under the Spire Music Festival. Ce sera la première année de retour de M. Kortgaard au Festival depuis 2019, et nous ne pourrions pas être plus heureux de le mettre en vedette dans un concert aussi spécial que celui-ci.

Rebecca Caine

Taylor Donald, soprano lyrique, détient un baccalauréat en musique de l'Université de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard et termine actuellement sa maîtrise en musique d'opéra à l'Université de Toronto. Taylor joue du piano et du chant depuis son plus jeune âge, et la plupart de ses travaux récents ont eu lieu à Toronto, en Ontario. Elle s'est produite dans plusieurs chorales, dont le Luminos Ensemble et le UPEI Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, et a interprété des solos dans des œuvres comme le Magnificat de J.S. Bach, le Requiem de Mozart et le Messie de Haendel. Au cours des dix dernières années, elle a souvent été finaliste au Festival de musique Kiwanis de l'Î.-P.-É., tant pour le chant que pour le piano, et a remporté le prix provincial de chant (prix Glenn et Maryanne Palmer) à deux occasions. Elle s'est également classée première au concours d'interprétation Dr Frances Gray en 2019. En mars 2020, Taylor a fait ses débuts à l'opéra dans le rôle de Pamina dans La Flûte enchantée de Mozart.
