ABOUT THE PLAY:  Rumor and reputation play a large part in Sheridan’s comedy of manners, in which gossip is wielded like a weapon. Lady Sneerwell is in love with young Charles Surface, but he, along with his brother Joseph, are both in love with Maria. While Charles is regarded as a man of loose morals, Joseph is thought to be more upright and responsible. The truth of their characters, however, is far more complicated. When it comes to light that Maria is also in love with Charles, Lady Sneerwell and Joseph plot to ruin the relationship by spreading rumors of Charles’ unfaithfulness. The Surface brothers’ rich uncle Oliver returns to town from abroad and decides to test the young men’s morality by disguising himself to observe them without their knowing his true identity.
