The Toasted Westerns

Back in 1988, Sally Robinson approached Jody Benjamin about possibly creating a duo.  Jody, (a very fit and energetic dance instructor who had just taken up guitar), leapt in the air with enthusiasm!  Hence, the Toasted Westerns were conceived. They played on the streets of Ottawa that summer and started to build their repertoire.

Eventually, they grew from a duo to a 5-piece band. “The Full Platter” included Ann Downey on bass, Carolyn Stewart on fiddle and Wayne Robicheau on drums.  The Toasted Westerns’ sandwich was Jody & Sally; Ann was the fries, Carolyn the coleslaw and Wayne, being the only guy, was the “lone pickle”. Vince Halfhide eventually replaced Carolyn, spiced up the group by becoming the hot sauce.

In 1996, they produced Out to Lunch. They were interviewed by Peter Gzowski, and were invited to play at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.  Jody & Sally toured across the country that summer, doing house concerts.

The Toasted Westerns were known as Ottawa’s Favourite Singing Sandwich, playing in duo, trio and Full Platter format for 20 years.

After a hiatus of almost a decade, the TW Trio was “resurrected”, opening for the Ian Tamblyn band at Grassroots, 2019.  

Now, they play as a trio with Sally, Ann and Jody.  The Toasted Westerns can be seen only a few times a year so don't miss them at Motel Chelsea.

En 1988, Sally Robinson a proposé à Jody Benjamin de former un duo. Jody, (une professeure de danse très en forme et énergique qui venait de se mettre à la guitare), a sauté de joie ! C'est ainsi que les Toasted Westerns ont vu le jour. Ils ont joué dans les rues d'Ottawa cet été-là et ont commencé à constituer leur répertoire.

Finalement, le duo s'est transformé en un groupe de cinq musiciens. « The Full Platter » comprenait Ann Downey à la basse, Carolyn Stewart au violon et Wayne Robicheau à la batterie. Le sandwich des Toasted Westerns était composé de Jody et Sally ; Ann était les frites, Carolyn la salade de chou et Wayne, étant le seul homme, était le « cornichon solitaire ». Vince Halfhide a finalement remplacé Carolyn, ajoutant du piquant au groupe en devenant la sauce piquante.

En 1996, ils ont produit Out to Lunch. Ils ont été interviewés par Peter Gzowski et invités à jouer au Winnipeg Folk Festival. Jody & Sally ont fait une tournée à travers le pays cet été-là, donnant des concerts privés.

Les Toasted Westerns étaient connus comme le « sandwich chantant préféré d'Ottawa », jouant en duo, en trio et en format Full Platter pendant 20 ans.

Après une pause de près d'une décennie, le TW Trio a été « ressuscité » en 2019, en première partie du groupe Ian Tamblyn au Grassroots.

Aujourd'hui, ils jouent en trio avec Sally, Ann et Jody. Les Toasted Westerns ne se produisent que quelques fois par an, alors ne les manquez pas au Motel Chelsea.
