The third annual Innovation Event, June 16 at Platform Calgary, explores innovation in leadership, the energy sector in transition and equity in tech access as well as a peek inside the metaverse and a taste of the future — literally!

Join us for the whole day to connect with Calgary's innovation leaders, pop in for the Food of the Future Lunch and get a taste of the wares of some of Calgary's leaders in agri-tech or stop by the Carbon Capture Cocktail Hour to try some local products that include carbon capture technologies in their manufacturing.

It's an interesting time to be leading an organization — what might have worked in the past is not necessarily what works today or what will work in the future. Drawing from a range of experiences in business, tech, entrepreneurship and coaching, our panel will discuss the qualities that define an innovative leader and what innovative leadership looks like in practice.

1:00 p.m. Energy in Transition Panel

Calgary is the centre of Canada’s carbon innovation pivot. With the opening of the Energy Transition Centre, our panel of experts will discuss this major innovation hub and what it means for our thriving city that's known for encouraging citizens to "Be Part of the Energy."

Panelists Kevin Krausert, CEO and Co-Founder, Avatar Innovations, Marla Orenstein, Director, Natural Resource Centre at Canada West Foundation and Heather Campbell, Executive Director, Clean Technology, Alberta Innovates will take part in this discussion moderated by Brad Parry, President and CEO, Calgary Economic Development. 

 

1:40 p.m. The Metaverse "in" Calgary Demonstration

Trevor Doerksen, CEO of ePlay Digital can tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about the metaverse. Join Trevor for this presentation where he will tackle the 7 rules for the metaverse spanning questions like whether or not Blockchain is required, how to define a "world", the differences between AR, VR and XR. Following this presentation will be a live Q&A and demonstration of the Klocked World metaverse.

How is cryptocurrency changing the meaning of money? Join Dr. David G. Dick, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Fellow of the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business (CCAL), University of Calgary for a presentation on the philosophy of money and how cryptocurrency impacts our relationship to it.

3:30 p.m. Equity, Access and Social Change Panel

Facilitating access to equity and technology is the foundation for a thriving innovation sector in Calgary.  Join our panel of experts as they talk about how they are revolutionizing opportunities for women in tech at the C-suite level, equipping non-profit organizations with digital know-how and cultivating a feminist, financial economy. 

Panelists Kylie Woods, Founder, Chic Geek, Charles Buchanan, CEO, Technology Helps and Salima Shivji, Executive Director and Board Director, Movement51 discuss these topics and more in this moderated panel discussion, followed by audience questions. 

 

4:30 p.m. The Future of Work

The pandemic was an awakening for the global workforce, but what does that mean today, tomorrow and in the future? In this presentation and live discussion with Top 40 alumni Umair Pervez, we will discuss what the future of work means for employers and employees and the innovative technologies and attitudes re-shaping the line between personal and professional.
