Description

Live Acts Canada + The Live Agency present:

A Night of Arabic and Persian Fusion featuring Tarab with special guests Keejaa and Farnaz Ohadi

TARAB (Vancouver) // http://www.tarab.ca/

TARAB plays interpretations of Egyptian, Arabian, Lebanese and other Arabic popular songs. Simultaneously traditional and progressive, TARAB weaves a mesmerizing sound that combines technical virtuosity, microtonal melodies and driving rock rhythms.

The word, “tarab,” is an Arabic musical term with no direct English equivalent. A loose translation is, "the feeling of ecstasy and surrender brought on by music." It is precisely this feeling that we strive to attain and transmit through our performance.

Featuring Hazem Matar on electric oud and lead vocals. Hazem has played the oud, an ancient precursor of the guitar, for over 20 years. He studied Arabic classical music for oud and vocals with one of Saudi Arabia’s great masters, Ghazi Ali. Well-known for his technique and musical spirit in his home city of Jeddah, Hazem brings the Arab world’s rich musical tradition to Vancouver’s music lovers.

KEEJAA (Vancouver) // https://www.facebook.com/keejaamusic/

Keejaa is a Vancouver based girls band with it roots in Persian music.Their modern tunes and melodies aims to revive folklore motives and stories. Storytelling aspect of compositions and arrangements of Keejaa is their main focus since the core members: Sadaf (vocal-piano), Deli (flute and piano)and Anita(vocal) are coming from the Animation, Classical Philharmonic and Performance Arts background. Keejaa’s mission is to introduce a modern version of Persian tunes and melodies to international audiences around the world and share their stories via music.

FARNAZ OHADI (Vancouver) // https://www.farnazohadi.com/

While growing up in her native land of Iran, Farnaz sang at every available opportunity but longed to find her authentic artist's voice.

Upon her move to Canada in 1990, she studied Operatic vocal training, Persian folk singing, then Flamenco cante through the instruction of Oscar Nieto, Vicente Griego, Naike Ponce and Lucas Ortega among others.

Farnaz's love of music and performance art inspired her to create the collaborative project "Mashregh Ensemble" in 2010, which combine's Persian poetry with Flamenco music. She has since released an album “Bird Dance” in 432 Htz in Persian Flamenco genre, which earned her a nomination for Canadian Folk Music award, Solo World music artist of the year in 2017.

Since the creation of her large-scale ensemble, Farnaz has also begun to explore pairing down the songs to their bare minimum, in order to highlight the intricacy of the fusion between the two stand alone genres of Flamenco and Persian music by creating her Quadro.
