Description

Oscill8 is thrilled to bring Atlanta's own Richard Devine (Schematic Records, Warp Records, Sublight) to Calgary for a mind-expanding afternoon music workshop, and a brain-bending evening electronic performance. Supported by Calgary Arts Development and the Ionic Sound System, Saturday February 24 2024 marks the launch of the beta edition of the SYNC: Sound and Image Conference! The Oscill8 Electronic Performing Arts Society is bringing the City's arts communities together this year to educate, promote, and grow the City's electronic performance artists. This is the first event of the year!

Join us from 3pm-6pm for a deep dive into audiovisual electronic performance arts, as Richard Devine walks us through his evolving approach to creating modular electronic music. As well, we'll have a hands on demo of the new Bastl electronic instruments from Calgary's own j.Alpinist! Plus a host of other workshop events where we'll dig into live performance secrets, vj techniques, and acoustic modelling.

Then join us in the evening from 9pm to 2am, where we experience Richard Devine's sonic journey through electroacoustic experiments, alongside Calgary's own live electronic artists Jay Michael, Lokey, Soulier, Jonathan Crane, and Jack Ryan! With world class sound provided by the Ionic Sound System, prepare for an utterly unique electronic experience!

Ticket price includes full day entry to both the workshop and performance event!

Richard Devine

Over the course of his 25-year career, electronic music pioneer Richard Devine has become synonymous with state-of-the-art music technology and the unending pursuit of sound design excellence. Atlanta-based producer and sound designer Richard Devine orbited hip hop and punk before tuning in to the punishing, mechanised rhythms of subversive ’80s industrial acts like Coil, SPK, and Meat Beat Manifesto. With his path firmly set on that of electronic experimentation and carefully controlled chaos, Devine would eventually become aligned with the trailblazing ’90s IDM scene, as popularised by Aphex Twin and associated acts on the Warp, Skam, and Rephlex labels.

Lokey

Ecologist and creative soul Leif Olson, aka lokey (that strange bass layer), creates live electronic music melding glitchy bass and boom bap beats with lush downtempo soundscapes and oddly melodic techno explorations.  His improvised, spur of the moment compositions draw on evolving performance engines and local nuances to conjure new and original music into the world. As a founding member and president of Alberta's Oscill8 Collective, he actively works to highlight and promote Alberta's electronic performing arts.
