Suzie Ungerleider’s gloriously emotive, crystalline voice and her bewitching performances have captivated audiences for over 25 years.  A wordsmith with a keen mind for detail and a wicked sense of humour, Suzie’s songs and voice pierce the heart, inspire a knowing laugh or a welling of the eye.

Born in the USA and raised in Vancouver, Canada, this award-winning singer-songwriter began performing under the name Oh Susanna in the mid-1990s, winning instant praise for her striking voice and poetic songcraft.  Her musical path has criss-crossed the mountains and valleys of Americana, folk, and roots, yet throughout her journey she has remained true to her own artistic vision.

Suzie has received many accolades for her artistry.  She is the recipient of a Genie Award for Best Original Song and a Canadian Folk Music Award for English Songwriter of the Year. She has also been nominated for three Juno Awards and four Canadian Folk Music Awards. After being a long-time member of the Toronto roots music scene, Suzie currently lives in her hometown of Vancouver with her husband, her daughter and their dog Willow.

AMY CRAZE

Amy Craze's lyrics weave rich stories of love, heartache, and fury, drawing listeners in with haunting resonance and dulcet melodies that rise and crash with sweet crescendos, leaving them breathless and hungry for more. Influenced by traditional British folk and rock music, as well as her love of blues and soul, Amy earned recognition as the Toronto Indie Artists Vocalist of the Year for her song "Before the Rain."  Jeff Bird of The Cowboy Junkies was so captivated by her talent, he invited her to sing harmonies with Margo Timmins and offered to produced her EP.  An active member of the Toronto music community, she is the founder of The Sundown Sessions, a monthly music series celebrating indie artists.  Amy is currently writing and recording new songs for an album to be released in the new year.

DARREN ROY CLARKE

Singer, songwriter, guitarist Darren Roy Clarke writes songs that map the backroads of the heart. Blending delicate roots, confessional country, and heartbreak folk, his music reveals a road-worn journey of the soul. Hailing from the hidden rural musical hotbed of Warkworth, ON, Darren has been gaining recognition as a “musician’s musician,” garnering attention and sharing stages with a host of Canadian songwriters and performers. Darren’s new album, Dirty Face and a Broken Screen, expands on the intimacy of his live sound with featured guest performances from Travis Good of The Sadies (acoustic/electric guitars, banjo), Kerri Ough of Good Lovelies (vocals), Michael Boguski of Blue Rodeo (piano), Melissa Payne (fiddle/vocals), Ryan Webber of the Webber Brothers (bass), and Steve Dagg (drums).

CHLOE DOUCET

Fresh off a year spent touring with Canadian indie legend Hayden and performing in the prestigious Los Angeles music showcase It's A School Night, Doucet’s latest offering is glazed with catchy choruses and playful hooks that delight the ear and tickle the brain.  The punky “The Truth” sounds like the catchiest 2000s-era Strokes song never written, while the more meandering “Five Thousand Suns” gives us the purity and melodic twists of a Liz Phair vocal, the sweet relief of an early autumn breeze cutting through a muggy August evening. “Driving,” an utterly charismatic ode to the magic of getting one’s license— however late in life— layers hard-hitting realism with a sun-bleached home movie of a winding country road.  This trio of songs feels gutsy and assertive, exploring themes of emotional sincerity with confidence and valour. Every song on the album feels more like a short story than a chapter: true to the refreshingly honest musical language that is uniquely Doucet’s own.

KAT GOLDMAN

Songwriters sometimes deem songs as "sky fallers," near perfect tunes that essentially seem as if they fell out of the sky fully finished. For most of her career, Toronto-based singer-songwriter Kat Goldman established herself as one of the finest singers and lyricists thanks to four fantastic studio albums teeming with what sounded like "sky fallers." Kat is also blessed with a voice of beauty that perfectly delivers the poignancy and longing contained in her songs.  Her songs have won awards and have been covered by Grammy-nominated band The Duhks, Dar Williams, and Kate and Ruth.  Goldman is also the author of Off the Charts: What I Learned from My Almost Fabulous Life in Music (Sutherland House Books.) which reveals the less glamourous side of this crazy life in music.  Kat is working on a new album to be released in 2025.

NICHOL ROBERTSON

Nichol Robertson is a Canadian roots music guitarist, born and raised in Toronto, Ontario.  Equally at home melting faces in front of packed houses with his high-octane guitar onslaught as he is providing Muzak-like background ambience at the local bar, Nichol Robertson is a sonic painter with an ear for Bob Rossesque aural landscapes. Nichol’s sophomore album Mimico Moonlight is a collection of 11 instrumental songs that run the gamut of hot pickin' country, Lawrence Welkian melodies, dreamy ballads and fun jazz romps.

CAM GIROUX

Renaissance man Cam Giroux is a drummer who cooks – in the kitchen and on stage.  He is a master of paradiddles and pizza dough.  Equal parts mixologist and master of groove, barista and boom-boom, Cam burst on the Canadian music scene in the world of indie rock, drumming in Sarah Harmer’s Weeping Tile and Jose Contreras’ By Divine Right.  Then he toured North America in a van with Luther Wright and the Wrongs performing country versions of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.  Although his true love is soul music, he will sometimes calm down enough to accompany singer-songwriters such as Ron Sexsmith, Amelia Curran, Jill Barber, Justin Rutledge and Suzie Ungerleider.  Oh yeah and did we mention he tap dances and can fix your boiler too?

296 Broadview is not yet a fully wheelchair accessible venue, with stairs between all levels. Our goal is to fix that, and we need your support to do so - please consider making a donation towards our goals to make HRL the best listening room in Toronto!
