Description
Franz Schubert's music for piano duet was never intended simply as concert repertoire. Much of it was written to be shared among friends—to gather around a piano, to listen, to converse, and to experience music together. It is music born of companionship.
For pianists Clark Bryan and Marion Miller, this repertoire reflects a musical partnership that has flourished for more than twenty-five years. Sharing a common artistic lineage through their studies in France, they have explored an exceptionally wide-ranging repertoire together, from the great Classical and Romantic masterworks to contemporary music. Their recording of Rachmaninoff’s Suites for two pianos was recorded at Aeolian Hall and released to critical acclaim.
Their collaboration has always been grounded in something difficult to teach but immediately recognizable to audiences: trust. Rather than carefully negotiating every phrase or debating every interpretation, they rely on years of listening, shared musical instincts, and the freedom to follow wherever the music leads. Each performance becomes a conversation in which each pianist supports the other, allowing individual voices to emerge while creating a single musical expression.
This programme celebrates some of Schubert's finest works for piano duet, including the graceful Rondo in A major, the imaginative Variations on an Original Theme, the incomparable Fantasy in F minor, and the dramatic Lebensstürme("Storms of Life"). Together, these works reveal Schubert's extraordinary gift for expressing joy, tenderness, longing, and emotional intensity through the intimacy of four hands at the piano.
Storms of Life is both the title of the recital and a reflection of Schubert's own emotional world—a journey through friendship, beauty, resilience, and the profound conversations that music allows us to share.
A portion of the proceeds from this concert will go towards El Sistema Aeolian, a free, intensive afterschool music program for children & youth.
