Stephen Stanley & NoElectric with Special Guest Tania Joy

Jason Mercer and I spent the last year dancing around the idea of how we might play some music together. Jason is one of my favourite players on the planet. I first knew him as a bassist, but he’ll be bringing his banjo to this project as well... In recent times, Jason had all but put down the electric bass, so we knew this wasn’t going to be a rock/guitar endeavour...

After a booking at The St. Alban’s Hall in Adolphustown, Ontario in May 2025 was followed by an interesting request to make the show all-acoustic, Stephen Stanley & NoElectric was born. It was a no-brainer that my closest collaborator for the past 15 years, Chris Bennett, would join in on 6 and 12 string guitars...

I then felt we needed one more person to bring this all-acoustic band together. Over a decade ago, one of the jewels of the Toronto music scene was a bar in the Junction called The Troubadour. It was there that I first met Michael O’Grady - and not long after he became the focus of the third verse of a song I wrote called “The Troubadour’s Song” Michael is a brilliant live performer and brings both the accordion and the tin whistle to the NoElectric fold...

And everyone sings...! Add in me on acoustic guitar and NoElectric lives!

The music will be a walk through my entire catalogue from the early days right up to the present including songs from Lowest of the Low, Too Many Sisters and The Stephen Stanley Band, along with new songs that have yet to be heard, and will end up comprising the first Stephen Stanley & NoElectric album.

Folk-roots artist Tania Joy brings soulful poignant songwriting to deeply personal musings across her catalogue while taking on complex narratives and bringing attention to social movements like Black Lives Matter on her latest release “I Will Stand,” produced by Juno Award winner Hill Kourkoutis. Tania is currently in working towards recording her third album and  is the Co-founder, Executive Director/Artistic Director of Springtide Music Festival, in Uxbridge, Ontario.

Jason Mercer et moi avons passé l'année dernière à réfléchir à la manière dont nous pourrions jouer de la musique ensemble. Jason est l'un de mes musiciens préférés au monde. Je l'ai d'abord connu comme bassiste, mais il apportera également son banjo à ce projet... Ces derniers temps, Jason avait pratiquement abandonné la basse électrique, nous savions donc que ce ne serait pas un projet rock/guitare...

Après une réservation au St. Alban's Hall à Adolphustown, en Ontario, en mai 2025, nous avons reçu une demande intéressante : faire un spectacle entièrement acoustique. C'est ainsi qu'est né Stephen Stanley & NoElectric. Il était évident que mon plus proche collaborateur depuis 15 ans, Chris Bennett, se joindrait à nous avec ses guitares à 6 et 12 cordes...

J'ai alors senti qu'il nous fallait une personne de plus pour compléter ce groupe entièrement acoustique. Il y a plus de dix ans, l'un des joyaux de la scène musicale torontoise était un bar du quartier Junction appelé The Troubadour. C'est là que j'ai rencontré Michael O'Grady pour la première fois, et peu de temps après, il est devenu le sujet du troisième couplet d'une chanson que j'ai écrite, intitulée « The Troubadour's Song ». Michael est un brillant interprète sur scène et apporte à la fois l'accordéon et le tin whistle à NoElectric...

Et tout le monde chante... ! Ajoutez-moi à la guitare acoustique et NoElectric prend vie !

La musique sera un voyage à travers tout mon répertoire, depuis mes débuts jusqu'à aujourd'hui, avec des chansons de Lowest of the Low, Too Many Sisters et The Stephen Stanley Band, ainsi que de nouvelles chansons qui n'ont pas encore été entendues et qui finiront par composer le premier album de Stephen Stanley & NoElectric.

L'artiste folk-roots Tania Joy apporte une touche émouvante et poignante à ses compositions, qui reflètent des réflexions profondément personnelles, tout en abordant des récits complexes et en attirant l'attention sur des mouvements sociaux tels que Black Lives Matter dans son dernier album « I Will Stand », produit par Hill Kourkoutis, lauréat d'un prix Juno. Tania travaille actuellement à l'enregistrement de son troisième album et est cofondatrice, directrice générale et directrice artistique du Springtide Music Festival, à Uxbridge, en Ontario.
