Final journey of the captivating Sound Palace series. New music artists, creators of sensational auditory experience, were selected by Nancy Tam to showcase their latest sonic creations in Quadraphonic surround sound at the VCC Broadway Auditorium, located on the unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples.

Tam says, “For a second year in a row, I am guest curating an eclectic bill for Hard Rubber Orchestra’s ‘Sound Palace’ series. Last year, I put together an intimate concert of solo ambient musicians offering a contemplation on the notion of resting. This year I am bringing a concert of duos of improvised and composed music. The configuration of two connotes relationships and offers possibilities of opposition and balance. For this concert, my prompt to the duos is ‘what we say to each other’. Surrounded by the audience, each duo chooses the way they orient themselves, facing each other, facing away, one in front of the other, side-by-side, etc. At this intimate concert, we get to witness a duo of friends, collaborators, and lovers perform a conversation between themselves with their instruments.”

Chris is a sound designer and artist exploring sonic scoring on stage, headphones and elsewhere. Much appreciation to Nancy and the sound community here. chrisross-ewart.com

Shervin Zarkalam, an Iranian interdisciplinary dramaturg, performer, and performance-maker based in Vancouver, is primarily interested in lecture performance, dance dramaturgy, meta-dramaturgy, sound-based performances, No-input mixers, Analog video feedback and real-time composition. His performances range from postdramatic theatre to performance art and autobiographical lecture performance.

Lunr Girl, Keira Madsen, is a musician, producer, and performer. She graduated from the New Media + Sounds Arts program at ECUAD in 2023 and was the recipient of the John C. Kerr Chancellor Emeritus Award for Excellence in Media Arts. When not making music she’s dreaming about the day she can adopt a dog. www.lunrgirl.com

infinite sibling, Paul Paroczai, is a freelance audio artist and programmer living in Vancouver. Alongside traditional composition, music production, and sound design, he specializes in the creation of generative music software that explores the unique creative capabilities of computational media. www.paulparoczai.net

Kevin Romain is a drummer, improviser, composer and bandleader. His working jazz quartet Salience Network released a self-titled record in 2023. As a side-person he can be heard regularly with Itamar Erez' Quartet and Only A Visitor, among others.  He likes tofu, old cars and a free Palestine. www.kevinromain.com

Lief Hall is an interdisciplinary artist and musician living in Vancouver. Exploring techniques in voice, experimental electronics and improvisation her current projects in performance, installation and sound engage with themes of nature, technology and myth. www.liefhall.ca

Nancy Tam is a listener and sound maker from Hong Kong. She makes music, sound design, and performance on-screen, on-stage, and in-gallery within an interdisciplinary context. Their curiosities include AR audio, the notion of camouflage, and the triangulation between sound, space, and body.

Formed in 1992, the Hard Rubber New Music Society is an active and unpredictable producer of new music. An Alcan Arts Award winner, the Society released its fifth recording, Iguana (2022), toured the Hard Rubber Orchestra in Canada and Europe and produced large multi-media shows, Cantata for the King and The Ice Age, a new music ice show.
