Sound Atlas Festival Day 3 - Coalescence

 

The 2026 Sound Atlas Festival's REALMS OF INFLUENCE concludes with a rite into unknown possibilities. Welcome to Day 3 - Coalescence (matinee start time!) in which we wander through zones of exchange, where music reveals the invisible forces acting upon it—and upon us. Here, influence is not something we escape, but something we inhabit, reshape, and send forward, carrying its echoes into new terrain. Journey with us through various performances spaces in Contemporary Calgary, as we bring you the best of contemporary music by living composers and sound artists in dynamic performances that will fill you with wonder and joy.

2PM - DAY 3 - Coalescence begins with Calgary's own string nonet Kensington Sinfonia gathering forces with a performance of Rounds by Jessie Montgomery featuring Sound Atlas Festival's co-director Jani Parsons. Also featured is music by Canadian composer Daniel Pelton who draws influence from his Jewish heritage. 

3:15PM - This year's Latitude 49 solo feature is celebrated Canadian violinist Timothy Steeves presenting a distinct exploration of music for solo violin. A film from 1926 is seen through the lens of contemporary disintegration with music by Michael Gordon and film by Bill Morrison in Light is Calling. Witness what four strings, two hands, and one mind can conjure in this unforgettable feature by one of Canada's finest artists.

4:30PM - Latitude 49 closes the 2026 Sound Atlas Festival with Forces of Nature, a set featuring duos and trios in the ensemble, coming together for the world premiere of Kevin Day's Tidal Forces.
