Description

The 2026 Sound Atlas Festival's REALMS OF INFLUENCE wanders through zones of exchange where acoustic ritual collides with digital speculation. Welcome to Day 2 - Altered Currents where works are shaped by nature, machines, networks, and the altered acoustics of modern life. Journey with us through various performances spaces in Contemporary Calgary, as we bring you the best of contemporary music by living composers and sound artists in dynamic performances that will fill you with wonder.

7PM - Altered Currents kicks off with the teaming energy of the Contemporary Performance Lab fellows, a super-group of emerging international artists. Drawing their forces and influences together, these dynamic young musicians will present mixed chamber music for piano, strings, winds, and percussion that weaves and threads through various repertoire including 2026 featured composer Kevin Day's Glasshouse.

8:15PM - Latitude 49 presents Transformation, a set that opens with a solo feature by pianist, composer, and sound influencer, Kevin Day (2026 featured composer). Together we delve into the sound-kitchen of Nina Shekhar's Ice 'n' Spice inspired by culinary memories of childhood, and the bewitching chaos of Chen Yihan's Luantan with its influence taken from traditional Chinese opera.

9:30PM - The interdisciplinary NUM duo of Maryam Sirvan and Milad Bagheri round out the evening with a set of original music designed specifically for this moment. Encompassing electroacoustic music, sound art, and multimedia installation, NUM hails originally from northern Iran with music that will guide us to places beyond our imagination.

SPECIAL OFFERING: Join us at 6:15pm in the Heather Edwards Theatre for a pre-concert composer discussion with featured composer Kevin Day.

*Please note: while children are encouraged to attend our festival, most of our sets are geared towards an adult audience. Please be advised that some acts will include sound amplification and electronics.
