Sofia Huarte Walk #3 February 19th, 2pm - University of Calgary

Re-acquaintance: the Sounds of my Body

Echoes in empty halls and in between the walls of myself. What is the sound of silence? This soundwalk is focused on connecting with the sound of ourselves and offering a space for reflection about growth, change, solitude and silence. A Sunday walk through the University of Calgary campus full of collaborative poetry to keep the soul warm in this frigid Calgary weather.

The walk will start at the base of the stairs on the UNIVERSITY-SIDE of the University C-Train Station pedestrian overpass.

A photo of Sofia Huarte.  A portrait headshot of a non-binary, Hispanic human.  They look into the camera in a mischevious way, as though they are holding on to a funny secret.  Theirs short hair is dyed pink, and growing out at the roots.

Sofia Huarte Aguilar (they/them) is a first generation Mexican immigrant residing in Moh’kins’tsis, and pursuing a combined degree in Drama and Philosophy at the University of Calgary. Sofia is a performing artist, a poet, a playwright, and a student organizer. Their artistic and academic practice revolves around constructing radical pedagogical tools for performance. They are deeply passionate about bringing diversity into theatre and academia, and utilizing their fields as critical tools for liberation. Recently, Sofia has been a part of Chromatic Theatre’s 2023-24 Playwrights’ Unit, where they developed a solo show titled Death and the Poet. They have also been the recipient of a PURE Award to conduct interdisciplinary research on Epistemic Injustice, a project they hope to expand on in their graduate studies. Sofia is thrilled to collaborate with New Works on a series of sound walks, and find new ways to look at the beloved city they call home by finding poetry in its soundscape.
