Description

Join us on Sunday for our annual wrap-up party at the Palomino Smokehouse! The final day of the festival is an incredible send-off complete with awesome music and delicious BBQ. Pig roast starts at 3:30pm, and is complimentary with your Sled Island wristband or ticket, so come hungry!

Playing Downstairs:

Control Top

Somewhere in between no wave, punk and riot grrl lies Get Better Records trio Control Top. With its jittery rhythms, shrieks and snarls decrying capitalism and patriarchy, and white-hot guitar riffs, debut album Covert Contracts (2019) announced Control Top as a band ready for sonic warfare.

Leather Jacuzzi

Rip-snorting punk band Leather Jacuzzi makes short, fiery numbers about subjects ranging from urine to caviar. Made up of members of Motorists, Bozo (both also playing Sled Island this year), The Mandates, Hugh Man and Gawker, Leather Jacuzzi makes an absurdist mark on the genre through years of experience with it.

KMVP

Featuring members of Shearing Pinx and Earthball, Kristjanne Vosper’s KMVP is an art-rock band drawing on riot grrrl and proto-punk for songs that are as weird as they are fun. The four songs currently available from forthcoming record On the cusp shows Vosper’s range from howls to chants while lo-fi drums and four-chord guitar riffs hammer underneath.

Bud Frazier and the Electric Razors

Featuring members of The Wet Secrets, The Bobby Tenderloin Universe and Shout Out Out Out Out, Bud Frazier and the Electric Razors are one of Edmonton’s most fun live ensembles. Its seven members, including the titular Bud, make celebratory psych-pop that is steeped in disco and new wave.

Doohickey Cubicle

Formerly known as Booty EP, Vancouver duo Doohickey Cubicle makes jazz-influenced dream pop that is as light and breezy as a day at the beach. Featuring glitched-out electronics, gauzy synths and airy vocals, Doohickey Cubicle will help you float away on a cloud of positive vibes.

wanderingaria

Using a complex setup of synthesizers and found noise elements, wanderingaria retains a masterful control of seemingly disparate elements to kaleidoscopic effect. Through a contrast between rhythm and ambience, use of unconventional time signatures and song structures, wanderingaria’s live sets have an ethereal beauty that enraptures and commands attention.

Playing Main Floor:

Amy Nelson

With a one-of-a-kind style that recalls a bygone era of the American South, Amy Nelson has some of the most captivating vocals in the city. Her debut album, Educated Woman, flits impressively between noir shades of outlaw country, primal Appalachian folk and beyond.

Alicia Clara

Indie-pop singer Alicia Clara will be performing in Alberta for the first time at this year’s Sled Island. She will be touring in support of debut EP Outsider/Unusual — and ahead of a second EP due later this year — which is a delicate collection of airy tunes that sound a bit like Julee Cruise if she were a part of the ‘70s Laurel Canyon music scene.

Midnight News

A new project featuring three members of Supermoon, Midnight News writes minimal pop ditties inspired by the loud-quiet-loud dynamic of certain ‘90s indie acts. As quick with a hook as their previous band — if not quicker! — Midnight News’ two demos from this year are a tantalizing taste of what is sure to be a rad indie pop party at Sled Island this year.

Uncanny Valley

Juxtaposing the cold robotics of gothic post-punk in rhythm and the more unhinged vocals and guitar style of no wave and proto-punk, Uncanny Valley makes a delicious meal out of seemingly disparate ingredients. Known for live sets that are danceable and showcase vocalist Alicia Palmar’s fury, the band is a must-see for any post-punk fan.

KTheChosen

Local rapper KTheChosen is making his Sled Island debut shortly after releasing the album +Vice (pronounced “add vice”) and being named one of Calgary Herald’s 20 Compelling Calgarians of 2022. The aforementioned album uses trap production to add a rattle to his perspective on “colonialism, grief, bad parenting, the pressure of societal expectations and club culture.”

Ginger Beef

Classically trained flutist Jiajia Li joins producer MSG for Ginger Beef, an experimental indie pop duo. The act had its debut at Camp Sled Island in 2021 where the debut single “Flashback” was released. Now available on Bandcamp, the song teases a playful sound tinged with ‘80s synths and boogie bass beneath flute that hints at lounge jazz and Chinese folk music.
