Description

 Uranium Club

Informed by the aesthetics of nefarious chemical companies and paranoia, Uranium Club draws on outsider post-punk and garage-rock immediacy for tunes that rip with neurotic furor. Part-spoken, part-yelped vocals are undercut by intricate, dueling guitars and a jittery rhythm section to dizzying effect.

Wet Cigarette

Victoria punk band Wet Cigarette has a deeply embedded sense of humour when it comes to making music. Its album Uncut (itself possibly a dick joke?) has songs like “Being Gay is Good for the Environment” that declare Kurt Cobain as the messiah. It’s music for letting go and giving into the fun, which is rather easy to do when the songs are as short, sweet and hammering as these.

Brain Bent

Known for donning distinctive matching boiler suits on stage, this sprightly post-punk outfit laughs in the face of boredom. Its Obligatory Icebreaker EP is an exploration of social malaise with an undeniable wit. The band’s tightly wound instrumentation, in-your-face tendencies and driving percussion ensures their restless tracks are at home on any dance floor.

Stripmall

Made up of Geneva Haley, Martine Ménard, Rob Vessey and Lace Shaw (all experienced players in the local music scene), Stripmall is self-described as “Western-influenced prairie punk.” Dour yet sprightly, the band brings a noir-ish drama to barebones punk tunes with the help of Haley’s dynamic vocals that jump from hollow sneer to deadpan croon at a moment’s notice.
