Description
SPELLLING
Oakland-based experimentalist Chrystia Cabral released her third album (and second for Sacred Bones) last year. The Turning Wheel is her most fully realized set of songs yet, expanding from the lo-fi, Italo disco palette of her previous LP with lush, expansive instrumentals. Each song evokes a sonic world where Cabral’s ethereal voice is empowered to spin myth and draw the listener in like a siren.
MAGELLA
MAGELLA commands any stage she graces with her powerful, warm voice. As a singer-songwriter that explores themes of isolation, resistance and identity, MAGELLA’s songs are as potent as they are compelling. Her sound is contemporary and forward-thinking, rooted in a hybrid of electronic and experimental genres.
Laura Hickli
Local songwriter extraordinaire and road warrior Laura Hickli returns to Calgary to perform at Sled Island 2023 in the midst of a seven-month-long tour across North America. Hickli applies classically trained piano proficiency and reverberating instrumentation to achieve stunning performances. Hickli’s 2022 EP, Both Feet In The World, At Least I Can Stand, tackles themes of mental health, trauma and a religious upbringing to accomplish chamber pop bliss.
