Description

Sister Ray

Sister Ray brings influences of gospel, ‘90s bluegrass and traditional Métis music together in acts of unflinching reflection and storytelling. Songwriter and vocalist Ella Coyes’ examinations of trauma and resilience are delivered in tandem with delicate arrangements of strings weaving beneath. Striking, raw and beautiful, Sister Ray paints rich landscapes in every stanza.

KT Laine

Prairie-born KT Laine makes superb, confessional bedsit pop that punches at the same weight as Courtney Barnett, Margo Price and Phoebe Bridgers. Her songs haunt like a late-night heart-venting over a fourth bottle of red wine and a backdrop of a moonlit sleeping city. It’s beautiful, beautiful stuff.

Krill Williams

This Calgary indie-pop quintet is building a buzz with numerous festival appearances and a pair of self-released EPs that showcase its easy going sweater-pop sound (i.e. comfy, cozy, fuzzy, familiar). Put ’em on and feel the warmth, but don’t get too attached, because each member is bringing something different to the table.

Hermitess

If you think the harp is only played as part of freak-folk or chamber music, think again. Jennifer Crighton’s recording/performance project Hermitess spins myths and legends through experimentalism that swirls around its singer-songwriter core. Solo or with her “Witch Choir,” Hermitess is a tuneful expansion of what we think of as harp music.
