Description
Pantayo
Made up of five queer, diasporic Filipinas, Pantayo makes electronic pop anchored by a kulintang ensemble (melodic gongs and other forms of percussion native to Asian island nations). Shortlisted for the 2020 Polaris Prize and produced by alaska B of Yamantaka // Sonic Titan, the group’s self-titled album shows off its ability to reach into far-flung corners of music while maintaining a unifying cohesion.
JOYFULTALK
Experimental act JOYFULTALK was originally booked to present its latest album, A Separation of Being, at Sled Island 2020. Unlike debut album MUUIXX’s glowing hum or the cavernous brutalism of 2018’s Plurality Trip, Separation pairs the tactile pulse of homemade electronic gear with jittering strings for a single suite broken into three swooning movements. Now two years on, JOYFULTALK makes its return to Calgary with additional new works in tow.
Ahya Simone
Musician, filmmaker and organizer Ahya Simone has served as principal harpist for the Wayne State University Wind Symphony, scored Virgil Abloh’s FW21 campaign for Louis Vuitton and has danced vogue while simultaneously playing the harp. On the frontier of experimentalism, her music blends elements of R&B, classical and electronic music to fresh and exhilarating effect.
Alexia Avina
Combining breathy, ethereal vocals with the folksy strum of a guitar, Alexia Avina delivers dream pop in gentle, cascading waves. Her 2020 album Unearth is the quintessential soundtrack for the indescribable coziness of hypnagogia - the transition from awake to asleep.
