Description
Frankie and the Witch Fingers
Energetic quartet Frankie and the Witch Fingers makes the type of electrified psych rock that inspires rapture with just enough crunchy ooze to honour the genre’s core. Mostly groove-driven, its latest album Monsters Eating People Eating Monsters… evokes barn-burning ‘70s rock while cutting a modern, garage-rock edge.
Mahogany Frog
A prolific psych band with 20 years of experience, Mahogany Frog returns to Sled Island on the heels of its seventh studio album (2021’s Mahogany Frog In The Electric Universe) and an unofficial score for the 1926 German silent film Faust. Tinged with prog, krautrock and classic psych, the band veers groove-laden and propulsive, more juggernaut and anthemic than navel-gazing and hazy.
Holy Void
Lacing themes of the macabre into fuzzy, twisting psych, Holy Void is a disquieting, unearthly force. The group’s lyricism evokes death and decay, though these morbid curiosities are juxtaposed by the indubitable passion and vitality of their live sets. Debut LP Naught is bone-chilling and expansive, much like the wintery Winnipeg plains from which the band hails.
The Radiation Flowers
The Radiation Flowers make psych that lies somewhere between shoegaze and space rock without feeling stuck in either genre. Most recent release Stuck In A Maze layers ethereal vocals, organ and guitar into a throbbing hum that fits from melodic to droning on a dime. Meanwhile, locked grooves create a trance-like effect that lures listeners onto the band’s nuclear but pastoral level.
Double Rider
A crescendo of bass guitar, bells and powerful percussion beats is decidedly classic rock. But when Double Rider combines those with songs composed by the trio’s grandfather, Matthew Manyheads, they prove that there is such a thing as contemporary, classic rock. Double Rider has toured throughout Alberta since forming in 2014 and released its debut, self-titled EP this year.
