Description

Control Top

Somewhere in between no wave, punk and riot grrl lies Get Better Records trio Control Top. With its jittery rhythms, shrieks and snarls decrying capitalism and patriarchy, and white-hot guitar riffs, debut album Covert Contracts (2019) announced Control Top as a band ready for sonic warfare.

Dead Fibres

Edmonton's Dead Fibres makes a phenomenal amount of noise for a three-piece. Heavy, caterwauling guitar work lends an element of chaos while the group's frenetic energy is held in place by an undeniable groove and an ear for structure. The band’s 2016 LP Disgusting People with Disgusting Motives is unrestrained yet measured, a quality honed through uproarious live sets.

Stuttr

On the 2020 EP It’s a Kadoozy, experimental punk band Stuttr sounds possessed. Kicking things off with two short bursts of spinning guitars, rattling bass and hardcore growls, the band then jumps into an extended, swaying jam before making a loud-quiet-loud anthem that lands somewhere between early post-rock and slowcore. That so much is accomplished in so little time keeps listeners on their toes, ready to see what magic unfolds on stage.
