Description

Backxwash

Backxwash aka Ashanti Mutinta is a Zambian-Canadian rapper & producer based in Montreal, Quebec. She is most noted for her 2020 album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out Of It, which won the 2020 Polaris Music Prize.

Her work is based in the horrorcore, hip-hop and industrial metal genres, and includes a culmination of themes around the intersection between faith, identity, and queerness. The poetry of her lyrics are the beginning of a cathartic healing process in which she is granting herself permission to be angry.

Her album I LIE HERE BURIED WITH MY RINGS AND MY DRESSES features productions by Backxwash, clipping., Nowhere2Run, as well as features by Censored Dialogue, Lauren Bousfield, Sad13, and Ada Rook.

Teebs

Painter and producer Teebs first garnered attention in the Low End Theory scene and has continued to evolve into the present. His most recent album, 2019’s Anicca, is a collection of beat-driven, expansively lush sonic tapestries featuring guests like Sudan Archives and Panda Bear. More recently, he issued a 10th anniversary edition of debut LP Ardour and released a collection of music-inspired paintings as NFTs.

Suzi Analogue

Formerly of Klipmode (alongside Knxledge, Mndsgn and Devonwho), Suzi Analogue is an electronic musician and the founder of Never Normal Records. For more than a decade, she has combined samples, beats, synth and vocals to create twitchy, euphoric tracks that blur genre boundaries while remaining endlessly danceable.

Trash Magic

If you’ve been to an electronic show at Sled Island before, the odds are that you’ve seen Evangelos Lambrinoudis II in one form or another, most likely under the pseudonym Corinthian. In this latest project, he uses experimental, hardware-made sounds and visuals to take on themes of late-stage capitalism. Without giving too much away, his live set will include some methodically engineered visual accompaniment.

Little Snake

Local producer Little Snake is the only Calgary act in history to be signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder record label. Last year, Little Snake released his long-awaited debut album, A Fragmented Love Story, Written By The Infinite Helix Architect, an ambitious collection of psychedelic bass music that features two tracks with FlyLo. Performing locally sparingly, this will be Little Snake’s Sled Island debut.

Sufyvn

Inspired by the LA beat scene and producers like Flying Lotus, Sufvyn’s music is a hypnotic fusion of northern African rhythm, hip-hop, and hazy electronica. Latest release Pseudarhythm, Vol. 3 (2021) sets a wistful haze of samples against meditative beats.

SEULEMENT

Mathieu Arsenault, formerly of Technical Kidman, is playing Sled Island in support of his debut solo album EX PO. The album’s songs use innovative structures where nearly beatless electronic soundscapes blur the lines between processed human voice and synth, and stuttering fragments become euphoric melodies. All the while, Arsenault sings in French with a shredded rasp.

 State n Division

Carlos Alberto Arteaga de Anda’s solo recording project State n Division is a synapse-firing world of skittering beats, eviscerated vocal samples and blaring synth. Like pioneering IDM acts such as Autechre, his work is exhilarating and unpredictable, veering from hyperactive to drone-adjacent at his leisure.
