Description

Cherry Glazerr

Cherry Glazerr’s brazen snarl is never far from a dreamy refrain. Their stomping garage rock and hazy pop dirges have propelled the group to tear up the Coachella stage and write music for Yves Saint Laurent. This eclectic journey is fitting for a band so adventurous.

Clementine Creevy created Cherry Glazerr in 2013 at the age of 15. She committed her early tracks as a solo artist to tape with Papa Cremp, a lo-fi romp of grilled cheese worship and teen drama.

Debut album Haxel Princess saw Cherry Glazerr evolve into a ramshackle fuzz-rock trio anchored by Creevy’s cheeky delivery of droll aphorisms. Apocalipstick, their first record with Secretly Canadian, solidified the band as a polished riff engine brimming with fierce social commentary. This growth continued on Stuffed & Ready, plumbing the depths of new wave groove to bring Creevy’s increasingly vulnerable lyrics to the surface.

Creevy has also contributed vocals to songs by Tyler, the Creator and Death Grips, and spent a season guest-starring on the TV show Transparent from 2014 to 2015.

2023’s I Don’t Want You Anymore is Cherry Glazerr’s most ambitious album yet. Brawny punk riffing drives tracks like “Ready For You.” Songs like “Bad Habit,” meanwhile, forgo guitars for spiralling vocal loops and danceable production that burrows into the mind. It was ranked one of the best rock albums of 2023 by PopMatters and is the perfect primer for Cherry Glazerr’s return to Calgary after their sold-out show at Sled Island 2018.

Window Lamp Corp

The garage rock dirges of Window Lamp Corp. glitter with bittersweet pop charm and brash punk energy. Debut album Episode made an immediate impression in Calgary, cracking the top 10 releases played the most on CJSW throughout 2023. Whether on the airwaves or in the pit, this corporation of jangle enthusiasts inspire moving and shaking.

knitting

knitting weaves languid melodies over slow guitars and catchy lyrics. This is perfectly captured on their self-titled debut album. Somewhere between being wistful and jubilant, the group’s lo-fi indie rock and dream-pop sensibility conjure a hazy trip down lanes of nostalgia.

Laughing

Featuring members of Nap Eyes and Monomyth, Laughing is a new power-pop project that aims to bring ‘90s Seattle spirit to the masses. Debut single “Bruised” is a Superchunk-y dream of disarming lyrics awash in a landscape of jangly guitar-work. Their upcoming debut album Because It’s True drops shortly after this year’s edition of Sled Island.

VERTTIGO

Shapeshifting dream-pop project VERTTIGO is ready to shine with a shoegaze atmosphere, ‘80s synth soul, and ethereal vocals that transport you to a magical realm of love and despair – whichever your soul desires. Hot on the heels of the singles “Snow Angels'' and “Autumn,” the band’s debut Sled Island performance promises to be a black hole of psychedelic bliss.

Nutrients

Jangle-pop act Nutrients is simply overflowing with charm. The band’s gentle tunes recall soft rock and new wave of the ‘80s but with a contemporary style that places them alongside acts like Homeshake. A new album is due soon, but don’t wait for that. Get started with 2022’s Different Bridges, a collection of pop gems full of polyrhythm and sax.

Lushings

When Lushings graces the stage, ‘90s alt thrives within psychedelic rock soundscapes. Their latest single, “Elevators,” channels the raw energy of a living room session while embracing the grunge influences that shaped their formative years. Lushings invites listeners into a dreamy yet unyielding live experience, glistening with nostalgia and modern expression.
