Connecticut-born Franz von Holzhausen has enjoyed a brilliant career since his graduation in 1992 from the famed ArtCenter College of Design. Starting as an assistant chief designer at Volkswagen Group and moving on to GM Design and Mazda North America, he quickly established a reputation for creativity and practical application in vehicle projects including the New Beetle, Audi TT and Microbus concept, Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky roadsters and the groundbreaking Mazda Kabura and Furai concepts.

As chief designer for Tesla, he built a full in-house design team, and guided the visual signature of the brand. In this discussion, von Holzhausen looks back on his career in design and what it has meant, and means, to help shape objects of appeal and utility.
