How Calgary Pride is continuing to celebrate in 2020
Pride celebrations are no exception to the cancellation of events all over the world. This year, Calgary Pride is celebrating 30 years of the festival but have had to think outside of the box to continue the celebration. Calgary Pride has done an incredible job of making sure that although the delivery of their event is different, there is still the ability for the LGBTQ2S+ community and ally’s to learn and celebrate. We wanted to highlight some of the organizations and events that pivoted their normal delivery to keep the celebrations going, because like they say, the show must go on!
Calgary Pride 2020 will include performances by over 200 LGBTQ2S+ artists, workshops and artist interviews, with community newscasts leading up to Pride Week (August 28 – September 6). The main events of Calgary Pride are:
- Free online learning series - Over 100 free learning workshops to the public through online sessions during the summer and Pride Week
- #ourpride - As part of the 30th anniversary festival, Calgary Pride invites local businesses to show their support of the LGBTQ2S+ community through the #OurPride initiative. #OurPride events are Pride-inspired creative gatherings and fundraisers aligning with provincial physical distancing recommendations as they are defined during Pride Week.
- Online Pride Parade - Calgary Pride Parade 2020 will be online! Each Pride partner can enter in the virtual parade, and parade goers can watch and participate from the live stream on the Calgary Pride website. The event is free with no RSVP required, live stream can be viewed on the Calgary Pride website
A Celebration of Love Drag Show
As a part of the #ourpride series, Plain Jane Events is hosting a celebration of love Drag Show with a portion of the proceeds going to Calgary Pride. This concert is in conjunction with the Hotels Live concert series at the Ramada Plaza Downtown Calgary that kicked off as a creative solution to socially distanced live music earlier this summer. Come out and join some of Calgary’s talented drag community in support of the Calgary Pride organization!

This event is also a fundraiser for #ourpride. You'll meet Kevin Allen, Calgary Public Library Historian, at The Beltliner and be greeted with a coffee and a pastry before starting the tour, which lasts for approximately one hour. The tour consists of downtown landmarks that were once the underground gathering spaces for the queer community and hear stories about life before pride or the legalization of homosexuality. Following this, you'll enjoy a special pride brunch from The Beltliner, including a mimosa, caesar or popsicle cocktail!
