Foundations in Contemporary Narrative Therapy: Advanced Clinical Applications

Due to high demand and a sold-out Part One in February, capacity for this training has been expanded. Early registration is encouraged.
While described as an advanced applications training, this is not a move into technique, nor a departure from foundations. Rather, it is an extension of them.
This two-and-a-half–day training opens with a keynote address by David Epston (joining from New Zealand via Zoom) and serves as Part Two of the Certificate Program in Contemporary Narrative Therapy.
While it follows Foundations in Contemporary Narrative Therapy: Theoretical Foundations, it has been intentionally designed to stand on its own as a meaningful and rigorous experience.
Those continuing from Part One will deepen the conceptual and ethical ground established there. Those joining for the first time will be welcomed through structured teaching that situates clinical practice within contemporary narrative therapy.
Participants may complete the certificate by attending both trainings in any order.
This training is intended for therapists at all levels who are seeking a more thoughtful, ethically grounded, and practice-oriented engagement with narrative therapy.
Contemporary narrative therapy does not begin with technique—it begins with a particular understanding of the person, relationship, and ethical responsibility.
In Part One, we asked:
Who is the person in narrative therapy?
In Part Two, we ask:
What becomes possible in practice when we take this question seriously?
This training is devoted to the clinical life of narrative therapy.
Rather than focusing on methods, it examines how therapeutic conversations are shaped by the therapist’s orientation to the person, to story, and to the effects of their actions.
Clinical work will be engaged through transcripts, live interviews, and therapeutic documents, including letters and poems that extend conversations beyond the session.
A Map of Client Authorship
This training does not offer a map of what the therapist should do.
Many approaches organize practice around therapist action or technique. These contributions are significant. At times, however, they leave less clearly articulated how authorship becomes available to the person themselves.
Here, we begin elsewhere.
We offer a map of client authorship—one that integrates practice and moral inquiry while focusing on how people participate in shaping their lives.
This map traces a movement:


from global descriptions where authorship is suspended


to experience-near accounts of what a person is up against


to the emergence of their own actions and responses


to an explicit engagement with values and moral positioning


to deliberate, ethical authorship taken up on purpose


The task of therapy, then, is not to move through steps, but to participate in conversations that make authorship visible, ethically grounded, and available to be taken up on purpose.
In this training, participants will be invited to:


Examine how their understanding of the person shapes clinical decisions


Engage deeply with clinical material, including transcripts and live demonstrations


Develop practices of listening that attend to complexity and unfolding storylines


Work with therapeutic documents (letters and poems) to extend conversations


Engage moral inquiry as it emerges within lived responses to life


Reflect on their participation in shaping the stories people come to live by


Whether continuing from Part One or joining for the first time, this training offers a rigorous engagement with contemporary narrative practice—grounded in its ethical foundations while opening new clinical possibilities.

Canadian country-rock guitarist Ryan Davidson hits the legendary King Eddy stage on July 22.
About Ryan Davidson:
Ryan Davidson is a Canadian freelance guitarist who has performed and recorded professionally for 31 years. He holds a Master of Music in Jazz Studies Performance from the University of North Texas. In 2010, Ryan recorded "LAB 09" with the One O'clock Lab Band for which the group received two Grammy nominations.
With the One O'clock, he shared the stage with jazz legends Dave Brubeck, James Carter, and Eddie Gomez.
In the country/rock music world, he has performed and/or recorded with Gord Bamford, Dallas Smith, Brett Kissel, Dean Brody, Chad Brownlee, Lindsay Ell, Meghan Patrick and many more. He has been nominated 12 times for CCMA Guitarist of the Year and has won the award twice. This year was his first nomination for the CMAB Roots Artist of the Year.
In addition, he could be heard on two Juno-nominated country records for both Gord Bamford and Brett Kissel.

A decade in the making, Danielle Dayton's debut full-length album is a labor of love that captures the bird’s eye view of her twenties with honesty and heart. The album explores themes of self-acceptance, rediscovering ambition, and the quiet determination to hold onto dreams while navigating the realities of adulthood. Blending dimensional synth textures, poignant choral harmonies, and infectious melodies, the album strikes a balance between modern indie-pop with folk flavour and story telling. 
The album itself is the product of a kismet long-distance collaboration. Danielle, based in Calgary, connected with Michigan producer and artist Noah Nigg through an online course focused on writing music for film and television. What began as a creative partnership crafting songs for sync opportunities soon grew into something much bigger after Danielle asked a simple question: "Will you produce my first album?"
Over the past three years, the project has crossed the Canada–U.S. border countless times through video calls, voice messages, emails, and shared recording files. Despite creating an entire album together, Danielle and Noah have never met in person—until now. The album release concert marks the first time they'll share a stage, bringing these songs to life with a full band in a celebration years in the making.
Festival Hall is wheelchair-accessible. It features street-level entry and accessible main-floor washrooms. street parking is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If there is no street parking available, three pay lots are within a one-block radius.

Singer-songwriter and lap steel guitarist J. Plank hits the legendary King Eddy stage on August 13.
About J. Plank:
J. Plank (Jeff Plankenhorn) is a BC-based, internationally touring singer-songwriter and master of the lap steel guitar. Known for soulful vocals, dynamic stagecraft, and a sound that bridges roots, blues, and folk, he has spent decades captivating audiences across North America, Europe, and Japan. Plank is a highly respected musician recognized for his skill as a slide guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist, gaining acclaim both as a solo artist and as a sought-after session player. His style blends blues, folk, and roots into a sound that’s uniquely his own.
In 2025, he released The Bend, a stripped-down solo acoustic album recorded on the Texas coast, showcasing just his voice, lap steel, acoustic guitar, and piano. Later this year he will follow it with a high-energy roots rock album recorded in the Netherlands with the band The Southern Aces — a project that blends live-off-the-floor energy with wizardly guitar playing, innovative songwriting, and, most of all, deep groove.
Plank’s career includes collaborations with a wide range of artists, headline festival slots, and multiple Austin Music Award nominations for Musician of the Year, Best Guitarist, and a win for Best Misc. Instrument for “The Plank,” a hybrid lap steel guitar he designed himself. For him, music is about bringing people together — whether biker or drag queen, listener or dancer — to share in the joy and connection that only a great song can deliver.
