Twenty-five years ago, when The Rankin Family disbanded, Jimmy Rankin walked out of one of the most successful chapters in Canadian music and stepped into the unknown...
After ten years as principal songwriter, player and vocalist with one of Canada’s most beloved groups — with multi-platinum albums, international tours and six Junos behind them — the songs were still coming. But they were different now: a little rougher around the edges, more personal, raw and edgy.
“I had all this creative energy bottled up,” says Rankin. “After a decade with The Rankin Family, I was writing for myself, playing with new sounds, and finding my own voice.”
That grand experiment became Song Dog.
Recorded in 2000 at Great Big Music in Toronto with producer Tim Thorney, the album drew from everywhere Jimmy had been — Cape Breton, Nashville, the road, the Rankin years — and turned it into something fresh. Folk, country, Celtic, Americana and rock all found their way into the mix, but the result was unmistakably Jimmy: gritty, melodic, deeply rooted, and completely his own.
Released in 2001 on EMI, Song Dog quickly became a defining moment in Rankin’s career. “Followed Her Around” lit up country radio, the video found heavy rotation, and Jimmy hit the road with the Song Dog Band, building a new following while bringing longtime Rankin Family fans with him.
The album went on to rack up serious recognition: an ECMA Album of the Year win, a CCMA win, two Juno nods, a SOCAN #1 radio play award, and multiple ECMA wins for singles and videos.
Now, for the first time, Jimmy is bringing Song Dog back to the stage and performing the album live in its entirety.
The Song Dog 25th Anniversary Tour celebrates the landmark album that launched his solo career, performed front to back, along with favourites from across Jimmy’s celebrated catalogue. For longtime fans, it’s a chance to hear the record that changed everything. Produced by Jordan Honsinger (Patrick James Clark, Morgan Griffiths) at his Nashville home studio and mixed by Jordan Oorebeek (Kalsey Kulyk, Sully Burrows) the native of rural Montreal and winner of the Emerging Artists Showcase at 2024's Boots and Hearts Music Festival weaves through six heartfelt narratives about love, attraction, loyalty and heartbreak: all delivered with potent melodies that underscore her universally relatable lyrics.

This isn’t just another tour date—it’s a rare, full-band reunion of blues heavyweights. Garrett Mason, Keith Hallett, Rhéo Rochon Jr. and Chuck Bucket - each well-known Canadian musicians - are hitting the stage together for an extremely limited run of shows, and we are incredibly lucky to have them for their only Prince Edward Island performance.
Long before they became icons of the scene, these four were true road warriors—touring coast to coast, packed into old vans with vintage guitars and a shared obsession with the blues. After carving out their own paths, the road has finally brought them back together on the same stage.
Expect a masterclass in grit and soul as they blend old-school blues with psychedelic rhythm rock n’ roll. It’s the heartbeat of our Friday night lineup.
Friday's show opens with Mama’s Broke - a world-touring powerhouse duo that defies the boundaries of traditional folk. Based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria Bates are multi-instrumentalists to the core. The duo moves seamlessly between fiddle, banjo, guitar, and mandolin, underpinned by foot percussion and soaring, telepathic vocal harmonies. Their music isn’t just a collection of songs; it’s a masterclass in atmospheric arrangement, seamlessly blending the driving rhythms of Appalachian old-time with the haunting, minor-key textures of Eastern European folk. 
With two critically acclaimed albums—including the JUNO-nominated Narrow Line—Mama’s Broke has earned a global reputation for their compelling, high-intensity live shows. Their music is a testament to the power of the folk tradition when it is stripped to its bones and rebuilt for a modern, changing world.
The night begins with an opening reception on the outdoor deck, with food and drinks (government issued ID required for alcohol) from local vendors, and the sweet piano sounds from Paulina Cooper with our spotlight on Holland College's (PEI) School of Performing Arts.

Mimi O’Bonsawin (Pronounced: MEE-MEE O-BON-SA-WIN) is a contemporary roots singer-songwriter born in Northeastern Ontario. She is  French Canadian & W8banaki (Abénaki), a member of the Odanak First Nation. Through her rhythm and story-driven songs, Mimi’s music embraces the beauty of the land. The ethereal quality of her music whisks you away with uplifting melodies and introspective lyrics that weave pop sensibilities with acoustic instrumentation. Layers of percussion and unexpected harmonies make you feel the music rather than just hear it.
 
As both artist and gardener, Mimi draws a deep connection between the two practices: “Making music and growing food are very much the same. They both start with a seed and, with proper care, can grow into a beautiful garden that we all can share. I put intention and love into every seed and every note.”
 
In May 2025, Mimi was awarded Solo Artist of the Year at the Trille Or Awards. Earlier in the year, she toured Australia with performances at the Woodford and Cygnet Folk Festivals. While hard at work on her next album, she’ll also hit the road for a cross-Canada tour this summer.
 Mimi performs as a duo with her husband, Ryan Schurman, on drums and percussion, creating an intimate yet uplifting experience. Together, they invite audiences into their universe with a full-band sound that inspires dancing, singing and joy.
 
In spring 2024, during her second tour in France, Mimi released Live In Concert, her first-ever live album, capturing favourite moments from one of her Willow album release shows. 
 
Released in March 2023, Willow is a collection of 14 songs that marked a turning point in her creative journey. “This album sounds like the music I have always heard in my heart,” Mimi says. “It is honest, it is real, and it is full of life. I have never felt more alive.”
 Late that year, on September 29, 2023, she released her first full-length French album, Boréale, an intimate reflection of her roots, also recorded with Ryan in their log home studio.
 
2024 brought incredible opportunities, with performances at festivals and arts centres across Canada. Mimi opened for JUNO-award winning artists including Aysanabee, Good Lovelies, The East Pointers, and DJ Shub, as well as Beverly Glenn-Copeland at Montreal’s Rialto Theatre.
 
The 2023/2024 season was marked by acclaim, with nominations at the Folk Music Ontario Awards, Capital Music Awards, Canadian Folk Music Awards, Northern Ontario Music & Film Awards, Native American Awards, and Prix Trille Or. Her albums Willow and Live In Concert were also considered at the GRAMMYs. In 2019, Mimi won Best Pop Album at the Indigenous Music Awards.
 
Reaching new audiences at home and abroad, Mimi stays true to this statement:
“I want to invite audiences into my world because, for me, music is medicine. It’s not mine, it’s not yours, music is something we all share. It is our garden.”

Bio:
Prior to forming the Legendary Hearts in 1987, Barney Bentall was part of the emerging Vancouver new wave music scene of the early 1980’s. His band, Brandon Wolf, released two EPs (one on A&M records) as well as a full length album before reforming themselves into a 1960’s cover band called the Revengers. Playing biker dances, hayrides, funerals and strip clubs in order to afford discounted studio time at the now legendary Little Mountain Sound, the band worked with soon to be famous producer Bob Rock on the demos that would spur CBS records to sign Bentall to a recording contract as well as convincing Bernie Finkelstein (Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan) to manage him. The bands eponymous first record ‘Barney Bentall and the Legendary Hearts’ released in 1988 garnered the band a Juno Award and went on to sell over 100,000 copies (platinum). Singles such as ‘Come Back to Me’, ‘The House of Love is Haunted’ and perhaps their biggest hit ‘Something to Live For’ were radio staples during the remainder of the 1980’s.  
Following the success of their first recording, CBS, now Sony Records, released ‘Lonely Avenue’ (1990) and ‘Ain’t Life Strange’ (1992). Singles from both these albums produced several top ten radio singles such as ‘Crime Against Love’, ‘Life Could be Worse’ and ‘Doin Fine’. Both albums achieved gold sales status of over 50,000 copies each. 
The band toured constantly and performed over 150 shows a year between 1988 and 1994.  With new members Mike Crozier and Dave Reimer the Legendary Hearts self produced their record ‘Gin Palace’ in 1995. Their ‘quickest to gold’ record to date, the single ‘Do Ya’ stayed at the #2 position at radio for 6 weeks. Other singles followed including “Shattered’ and ‘Oh Shelly’ and the radio play allowed the band to embark on their most comprehensive tour of their career with multiple stops in all provinces. 
Following a ‘Greatest Hits’ release in 1996, the band returned to the studio to record ‘Til Tomorrow’, releasing two singles ‘You Should Be Having Fun’  and ‘Shoulder of the Road’ before touring in support of the record through the rest of the year. 
Following the last date of their 1997 tour of Canada, the band went on hiatus with each member continuing with separate musical endeavors.  
Barney has released five solo records, ‘Gift Horse’, ‘Inside Passage’, ‘Flesh and Bone’, ‘The Drifter and The Preacher and ‘Cosmic Dreamer’. This year Barney recently celebrates the twentieth anniversary of his 13 piece musical revue ‘The Cariboo Express’ which to date has raised nearly $6,000,000 dollars, helping various community minded charities in Canada.  
Barney continues to tour solo, and with his bands The Barney Bentall Band, Bentall Taylor Ulrich and the High Bar Gang. 
With over 250,000 records sold and twenty Top 30 singles, The Legendary Hearts still enjoy performing several shows a year all over Canada.

Joel Plaskett - 30+ years on records and the road, still restless & rolling onFor over three decades, Joel Plaskett has proven himself a spinning wheel of reinvention. The Nova Scotia songwriter's eclectic body of work reveals a restless and playful spirit, always transforming and expanding.While continuing to celebrate -- and be celebrated for -- his regional ties and embrace of East Coast musical traditions, Joel’s omnivorous appetite for new sonic horizons is an integral part of his work. His discography includes heavy riff epics, like Thrush Hermit's now-classic swansong Clayton Park (1999); low-fi and wide eyed solo records like In Need of Medical Attention (1999) and La De Da (2005); lean, loose and lyrical rock and roll with the Emergency on Down at the Khyber (2001) and Truthfully, Truthfully (2003); and a father-and-son nod to English folk traditions with Solidarity (2017). Then there are the endeavours that push the envelope further: the Emergency’s romantic epic concept album Ashtray Rock (2007); the months-long songwriting challenge Scrappy Happiness (2012); and Three (2009) and 44 (2020), Joel’s sprawling, multi-record ventures exploring love, loss, and existential investigation. For his latest release, the 4-track project One Real Reveal (2024), Plaskett strips his songwriting down to its raw materials, allowing everything in—all the human touches the tape could pick up—and letting (almost) everything out. Coast-to-coast and the world 'round, Joel has rocked crowds at clubs, festivals and grand old theatres with longtime Emergency bandmates Dave Marsh and Chris Pennell as well as drawn audiences close with intimate acoustic shows, both solo and with his father, Bill. Then there are the special events that have really allowed Joel to reach the rafters, like headlining Toronto’s Massey Hall with everyone in tow, playing the NAC in Ottawa backed by the national orchestra, and warming up huge stages for artists like The Tragically Hip and Paul McCartney.Joel and the Emergency have also been roundly celebrated within the music industry for their work, racking up awards and nominations from the JUNOs, the Polaris Music Prize, the East Coast Music Awards, Music Nova Scotia, and numerous others. While Joel’s songs are beloved far beyond the community that helped forge his sound, his creative heart is still found at home in Nova Scotia. At 45 Portland Street in Dartmouth there’s Fang Recording, the studio where he’s made many of his albums and produced records for other great artists like Mo Kenney, Steve Poltz, Shotgun Jimmie and Jimmy Rankin. And through the door to the front of the building lies Taz Records, Morley's Coffee and Friction Books. Since 2023, Joel has used the space to present Window Inn Wednesdays, a monthly, no-phones-allowed variety show that pushes back—like most of his projects—against the speed and din of modern life, making space for real engagement between art, artist, and audience.

Alexander Gallant is a folk singer-songwriter based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a one-of-one performer, his lush fingerpicking, refreshingly original poetry, and unpredictable yet delightfully sardonic stage banter has earned him his reputation as one of the best storytellers from the Atlantic provinces. “Your favourite songwriter's favourite songwriter”, Gallant is adept at that old showbusiness trick - make them laugh and make them cry. Gallant's unique perspective has cemented him as one of the most original voices in folk singer-songwriting in decades. Always a gleeful discovery to the uninitiated, Alexander is often seen perking up the shoulders of an audience, and winning over any room. From front parlours and folk clubs to theaters and celebrity secret societies, Alexander Gallant has delighted audiences all around eastern and central Canada.
As a part of the growing artists hub and gathering space at 45 Portland St in Dartmouth, Alexander has gained notoriety supporting and working with Joel Plaskett on his secret Window Inn performances, frequently performing to sold out crowds alongside many notable musicians such as Charlotte Cornfield, Mo Kenney, Jenn Grant, Rose Cousins, Kim Harris, Stuart Legere, and more.
