Description
🎶 RAGTIME The Musical — A Powerful American Story Reborn 🎶
Sweeping, emotional, and urgently relevant, RAGTIME The Musical returns to New York in a breathtaking new production that captures the promise—and the fault lines—of the American Dream. Adapted from E.L. Doctorow’s acclaimed novel, this epic musical unfolds at the dawn of the 20th century, when hope surged alongside social upheaval, and the future of a nation was being forged.
Set against the rapidly changing backdrop of early America, Ragtime intertwines the lives of three families whose stories reflect the nation’s deepest struggles and highest aspirations. Coalhouse Walker, Jr., a brilliant Black pianist, dreams of dignity and justice alongside his beloved Sarah. Tateh, a Jewish immigrant, fights for survival and opportunity with his young daughter. Meanwhile, a wealthy white family led by Mother begins to question the world they’ve always known. Their journeys—separate yet deeply connected—reveal how race, class, and identity collide in the pursuit of equality and belonging.
Featuring a soaring, unforgettable score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, a powerful book by Terrence McNally, and original orchestrations by William David Brohn, Ragtime blends intimate human stories with monumental historical events. Real-life figures and moments are woven seamlessly into the narrative, creating a musical that feels both personal and profoundly national.
This new revival is directed by incoming Lincoln Center Theater Artistic Director Lear deBessonet and envisioned on the grand stage of the Vivian Beaumont Theater. The cast features Tony nominee Joshua Henry, Olivier and Grammy nominee Caissie Levy, and Tony Award winner Brandon Uranowitz, bringing extraordinary vocal power and emotional depth to this landmark musical.
Profound, moving, and musically lush, RAGTIME is essential Broadway—an unforgettable theatrical experience that speaks to America’s past while resonating powerfully with the present.
